The spawning migration of anadromous rainbow trout in the Santa Cruz River, Patagonia (Argentina) through radio-tracking Ecología austral

Adult anadromous rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from the Santa Cruz River were implanted with radio-transmitters in May 2000 as they ascended the river from the ocean to locate spawning areas, assess the range and timing of the spawning migration, and determine the composition of the spawning populations. Radio-tagged fish revealed geographic and temporal migration patterns and previously unidentified spawning areas. Telemetry data indicated that anadromous fish dwell and spawn in the main stem river. Range of the total detected upstream migration varied between 2-280 km. Understanding variations in habitat use through time contributes to identification of habitats critical for species survival. Here we used passive acoustic telemetry to examine the residency and site fidelity patterns of the reef manta ray Mobula alfredi at Lady Elliot Island (LEI), a key aggregation site in eastern Australia. Six acoustic receivers were moored around LEI between 2009 and 2012, and 34 acoustic transmitters were deployed on manta rays. All tagged animals returned to this site within their recording period, with some individuals visiting the area for up to 23 consecutive days. Polythoridae comprise a widespread group of species in the New World tropics, but little is known about their behavior or life history. Here, we described the reproductive behavior of Amazonian Chalchopteryx rutilans, using mark-recapture techniques. Males were resident and territorial, though we found disputes (complex flight manoeuvres) to be rare. Trunks (rotting wood) were important to male persistence in sites, as these are the locations preferred by females for oviposition. The mating system of C. rutilans may be comparable to the resource limitation category, described by Conrad & Pritchard (1992), where males cannot control female access to oviposition sites.
