Determinação de vitamina A no leite de mães doadoras do banco de leite humano (BLH) de Manaus/AM: efeito do processamento Acta Amazonica
Oliveira,Ana Maria Matos Monteiro; Marinho,Helyde Albuquerque.

Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Bortolotto,E.B.; Gonçalves,P.B.D.; Neves,J.P.; Costa,L.F.S.; Maciel,M.N.; Montagner,M.M.; Farias,A.M.; Stranieri,P..

Effects of ethanol intake on retinol concentration in the milk of lactating rats BJMBR
Albuquerque,K.T.; Ramalho,R.A.; Soares,A.G.; Tavares-do-Carmo,M.G..
The effect of the consumption of ethanol (5%) on retinol concentration in milk was studied in the rat on day 12 after delivery, together with the evolution of dam body weight and pup growth rate. Female Wistar rats receiving alcohol (5%) in drinking water during lactation (N = 7) were compared to normal controls fed ad libitum (N = 6). The mean maternal alcohol intake was 3.96 ± 0.23 g/kg body weight per day. To determine retinol levels in milk we used the Bessey and Lowry method, modified by Araújo and Flores ((1978) Clinical Chemistry, 24: 386-392). The pups were separated from dams for a 2-4-h period, after which the dams were injected intraperitoneally with anesthetic and oxytocin. The concentration of retinol in milk was 162.88 ± 10.60 µg/dl in the...

Retinol-induced changes in the phosphorylation levels of histones and high mobility group proteins from Sertoli cells BJMBR
Moreira,J.C.F.; Dal-Pizzol,F.; Rocha,A.B.; Klamt,F.; Ribeiro,N.C.; Ferreira,C.J.S.; Bernard,E.A..
Chromatin proteins play a role in the organization and functions of DNA. Covalent modifications of nuclear proteins modulate their interactions with DNA sequences and are probably one of the multiple factors involved in the process of switch on/off transcriptionally active regions of DNA. Histones and high mobility group proteins (HMG) are subject to many covalent modifications that may modulate their capacity to bind to DNA. We investigated the changes induced in the phosphorylation pattern of cultured Wistar rat Sertoli cell histones and high mobility group protein subfamilies exposed to 7 µM retinol for up to 48 h. In each experiment, 6 h before the end of the retinol treatment each culture flask received 370 KBq/ml [32P]-phosphate. The histone and HMGs...

Assessment of indicators of vitamin A status in non-cirrhotic chronic hepatitis C patients BJMBR
Santana,R.C.; Machado,A.A.; Martinelli,A.L.C.; Jordão,A.A.; Ramalho,L.N.Z.; Vannucchi,H..
Subjects with chronic liver disease are susceptible to hypovitaminosis A due to several factors. Therefore, identifying patients with vitamin deficiency and a requirement for vitamin supplementation is important. Most studies assessing vitamin A in the context of hepatic disorders are conducted using cirrhotic patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 43 non-cirrhotic patients with chronic hepatitis C to evaluate markers of vitamin A status represented by serum retinol, liver retinol, and serum retinol-binding protein levels. We also performed the relative dose-response test, which provides an indirect estimate of hepatic vitamin A reserves. These vitamin A indicators were assessed according to the stage of liver fibrosis using the METAVIR score...

Tecnol. Aliment.
BIANCHINI,Rute; PENTEADO,Marilene De Vuono Camargo.

Annexin II mRNA expression in bovine oocytes during follicular development Genet. Mol. Biol.
Costa,Luis Fabiano Santos da; Machado,Márcia Silveira Netto; Oliveira,João Francisco Coelho de; Zamberlan,Gustavo; Gonçalves,Paulo Bayard Dias.
We investigated the expression of calcium-dependent phospholipid binding protein annexin-II (Ann-II) messenger RNA (mRNA) during preantral follicle development and in oocytes from antral follicles of different diameters (< 3 mm, 5 to 8 mm and > 8 mm). The action of retinol on Ann-II mRNA expression in mature oocytes was also examined. Only oocytes from secondary preantral follicles expressed Ann-II mRNA and at the germinal vesicle stage expression by oocytes from follicles larger than 8 mm was significantly higher (p < 0.05) compared with oocytes from follicles smaller than 3 mm or between 5 and 8 mm. Ann-II mRNA expression by metaphase II oocytes from follicles larger than 8 mm was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that from oocytes from...

Borguini,Renata Galhardo; Pacheco,Sidney; Chávez,Davy William Hidalgo; Couto,Giovana Almeida; Wilhelm,Allan Eduardo; Santiago,Manuela Cristina Pessanha de Araújo; Nascimento,Luzimar da Silva de Mattos do; Jesus,Monalisa Santana Coelho de; Godoy,Ronoel Luiz de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Vitamin A deficiency is the third most important micronutrient deficiency having a significant impact on public health worldwide. The aim of this study was to develop a carotenoid extraction process with edible vegetable oils, using a central composite design which, concurrently, enriches the oils with provitamin A carotenoids. The stability of carotenoids in the oil and their shelf life was also evaluated. The process also aimed to meet the Recommended Daily Intake for vitamin A (600 μg retinol equivalent for an adult) with the enriched oil. The results showed that 20 % of the vegetable matrix (dried carrot) in vegetable oil and 5 min of extraction time was an optimum combination for both soy oil (64.43 μg retinol equivalent mL−1) and olive oil...
