Mitochondrial phylogeny of grey mullets (Acanthopterygii: Mugilidae) suggests high proportion of cryptic species 5
Durand, Jean-dominique; Borsa, Philippe.
The low level of morphometric variability and the poor phylogenetic information borne by the morpho-anatomical characters used thus far in the systematics of grey mullets (Mugilidae) emphasize the utility of molecular systematics in this family. A recent mitochondrial phylogeny of grey mullets has uncovered multiple deep lineages within several species, flagging putative cryptic species. Here, we considered that several of the deeply divergent lineages represent separate species based on either the tree topology, independent data from nuclear markers, geographic distributions, or a combination of the foregoing. By analogy with these well-documented cases, we considered other deep lineages in seven genera we focused on to represent putative cryptic species....

Revisional notes on Coladenia Moore, 1881 (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) 16
Jong, R. de; Treadaway, C.G..
The species of Coladenia Moore, 1881, occurring in the Philippines are revised. The following species are shown to occur there: C. igna (Semper, 1892), C. semperi Elwes & Edwards, 1897, C. minor Chiba et al., 1991, and C. palawana (Staudinger, 1889). Two new species are added: C. ochracea and C. similis, and the new subspecies of C. igna marinda, is described. Due to the incorrect identification of the Sundaland form of C. agni (de Niceville, 1883) as the Philippine C. igna by Evans (1949), the former was still unnamed; it is named C. agni sundae here.

Revision of the African genus Heckeldora (Meliaceae) 16
Wilde, J.J.F.E. de.
The African genus Heckeldora (Meliaceae) is revised. Contrary to earlier views the widespread and variable H. staudtii is shown to consist of four distinct entities, each worthy of specific status. Heckeldora zenkeri is therefore re-instated and two other species, originally described in the much larger genus Guarea, and formerly also considered conspecific with H. staudtii, are resurrected and formally transferred to Heckeldora. In addition, two new species, H. jongkindii J.J. de Wilde from Liberia and H. trifoliolata J.J. de Wilde from Gabon are recognized and described. Heckeldora mangenotiana is transferred to Guarea and the new combination made. A key to the six Heckeldora species now recognized is provided and maps of their distribution are presented.

Hydraires semi-profonds de Madagascar, (Coelenterata Hydrozoa), étude systematique et écologique 16
Gravier-Bonnet, N..
The present collection was made on the south and west coasts of Madagascar between 90 en 465 meters depth and includes 17 species of calyptoblastic hydroids, belonging to six families: Campanulinidae, Lafoeidae, Campanulariidae, Syntheciidae, Sertulariidae and Plumulariidae. Twelve are recorded for the first time from Madagascar, while three of these are new for the Indian Ocean and one is described as new (Tulpa costata). Endemic species represent half of the collection and are numerically more important than cosmopolitan, tropical-indopacific, and southern species. A comparative study of bathymetrical characteristics of species from Madagascar and around the world allows to distinguish three groups of species: deepsea species, which have a very wide...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 19. Type material from Japan in The Natural History Museum, Tring, U.K. 16
Dickinson, E.C.; Morioka, H.; Walters, M..
The Natural History Museum, Tring, holds type material from Japan upon which names were based by Gould, Gurney, Hargitt, Ingram, Mathews, Oates, Seebohm, Sharpe, Swinhoe, Tristram and Vigors. In most cases selected types, which are not necessarily lectotypes, have been listed by Warren (1966) or Warren & Harrison (1971), but we provide here information that has come to light during preparatory work on a list of types of all Japanese taxa. We have located types for a number of taxa for which they had not been identified or segregated, and lectotypes are here designated for three taxa to safeguard current nomenclatural practice.

The genus Miliusa (Annonaceae) in the Austro-Malesian area 16
Mols, J.B.; Keßler, P.J.A..
A taxonomic revision of the Austro-Malesian species of Miliusa Lesch. ex A.DC. (Annonaceae) is presented. Ten species can be recognised in the area, including one new species, Miliusa novoguineensis, described here. Most species are restricted to certain islands or geographic areas. Miliusa horsfieldii (Benn.) Pierre is the main exception as it is distributed from Hainan up to Queensland, Australia. Six of the ten species (except M. amplexicaulis Ridl., M. longipes King, M. macropoda Miq. and M. parviflora Ridl.) have a deciduous habit, and are largely restricted to areas with a monsoon climate. A key, based primarily on generative characters, and descriptions to the species are included.

Review of the family Halopterididae (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) 16
Schuchert, P..
All genera and species of the hydrozoan family Halopterididae are reviewed. Where material was available, species are described and figured and the extent of morphological variation is assessed as far as possible. The re-examined material includes samples from the Challenger, Siboga, and Galathea expeditions. Numerous types were re-examined and taxonomic revisions made where necessary. For several nominal species lectotypes are designated. Two new species are described: Antennella kiwiana from New Zealand and Halopteris platygonotheca, a wide spread species from the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Halopteris buskii var. peculiaris (Billard, 1913) is raised to species level as Halopteris peculiaris. Several species are sunk into synonymy: Plumularia balei Billard, 1911...

Revision of the genus Phaeanthus (Annonaceae) 16
Mols, J.B.; Keßler, P.J.A..
A revision of the genus Phaeanthus Hook.f. & Thomson (Annonaceae) is presented. The genus comprises 8 species. A key to the fruiting and/or flowering specimens of the genus is included. The genus consists of shrubs to small-sized trees from Malesia and Vietnam. It is characterised by sepals and outer petals that are alike, numerous carpels and stamens, the latter truncate with a distinctive connective prolongation, monocarpous fruits, and leaves often drying dark brown to black. A phylogenetic analysis shows the monophyly of the genus and that Phaeanthus nutans can be considered the sister species of the remaining species.

Revision of the genus Cleidion (Euphorbiaceae) in Malesia 16
Kulju, K.K.M.; Welzen, P.C. van.
A revision of the Malesian species in the genus Cleidion is presented. Cleidion javanicum is shown to be the correct name for the widespread type species (instead of the name C. spiciflorum). A new species, C. luziae, resembling C. javanicum, is described from the Moluccas, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. In addition, C. salomonis is synonymised with C. papuanum and C. lanceolatum is treated as a variety of C. ramosii. In total 7 Malesian Cleidion species are recognized. Cleidion megistophyllum from the Philippines cannot reliably be confirmed to belong to the genus due to lack of information and specimens and is treated as a doubtful species.

Establishing species distributions in large tropical plant genera: insights from twelve new Thai records of Oberonia (Orchidaceae) 16
Bunpha, K.; Pedersen, H.Æ.; Sridith, K..
Establishing species distributions is particularly challenging in large tropical genera of inconspicuous plants. One such genus is Oberonia (Orchidaceae) which we are currently revising for Thailand. When encountering material of a putatively new species, great care has been taken to make a wide geographic search for matching extra-Thai taxa. Against this background, we here record 12 species as new for Thailand: O. dissitiflora, O. evrardii, O. gracilis, O. insectifera, O. lotsyana, O. microphylla, O. orbicularis, O. semifimbriata, O. singalangensis, O. stenophylla, O. suborbicularis, O. wenzelii. Seven records are based (at least in part) on older collections, suggesting that many gaps in currently known species distributions can be filled through...

Generic revision of the superfamily Pterophoroidea (Lepidoptera) 16
Gielis, C..
The genera of the superfamily Pterophoroidea are redescribed. Three new genera are described: Dejongia, Stockophorus and Shafferia. The characters of the genera and their states are translated into a data matrix. A majority rule consensus tree composed with PAUP serves as a basis for a phylogenetic analysis. A cladogram, representing the views of the author, based on the data acquired, is presented with argumentation. The evaluation of the characters is discussed. A new subfamily is erected, the Deuterocopinae. The Pterophorinae are redefined. The Platyptiliinae are synonymized with the Pterophorinae. The Macropiratidae, considered by Minet (1991) a subfamily or a genus of the Pterophoridae, has been raised to family rank, and is placed as the sister group...

Review of the Neotropical species of the family Pterophoridae, part I: Ochyroticinae, Deuterocopinae, Pterophorinae (Platyptiliini, Exelastini, Oxyptilini) (Lepidoptera) 16
Gielis, C..
The Pterophoridae (Ochyroticinae, Deuterocopinae, Pterophorinae (Tribus: Platyptiliini, Exelastini, Oxyptilini)) species of the Neotropical fauna are reviewed. The species are redescribed. Moths are illustrated in colour for the first time, their genitalia are illustrated in line drawings. The examination of type specimens revealed the presence of four new synonyms: Platyptilia juanvinas Gielis, 1999, is a junior synonym of Platyptilia gravior Meyrick, 1932; Platyptilia jonesi Gielis, 1996, is a junior synonym of Platyptilia semnopis Meyrick, 1931; Oxyptilus maleficus Meyrick, 1926, is a junior synonym of Leptodeuterocopus neales (Walsingham, 1915); Lioptilus parvus Walsingham, 1880, is a junior synonym of Lioptilodes albistriolatus (Zeller, 1871).
