Evolutionary Origins of Rhizarian Parasites ArchiMer
Sierra, Roberto; Canas-duarte, Silvia J.; Burki, Fabien; Schwelm, Arne; Fogelqvist, Johan; Dixelius, Christina; Gonzalez-garcia, Laura N.; Gile, Gillian H.; Slamovits, Claudio H.; Klopp, Christophe; Restrepo, Silvia; Arzul, Isabelle; Pawlowski, Jan.
The SAR group (Stramenopila, Alveolata, Rhizaria) is one of the largest clades in the tree of eukaryotes and includes a great number of parasitic lineages. Rhizarian parasites are obligate and have devastating effects on commercially important plants and animals but despite this fact, our knowledge of their biology and evolution is limited. Here, we present rhizarian transcriptomes from all major parasitic lineages in order to elucidate their evolutionary relationships using a phylogenomic approach. Our results suggest that Ascetosporea, parasites of marine invertebrates, are sister to the novel clade Apofilosa. The phytomyxean plant parasites branch sister to the vampyrellid algal ectoparasites in the novel clade Phytorhiza. They also show that...

Estimating biogenic silica production of Rhizaria in the global ocean ArchiMer
Llopis Monferrer, Natalia; Boltovskoy, Demetrio; Tréguer, Paul; Mendez Sandin, Miguel; Not, Fabrice; Leynaert, Aude.
Siliceous polycystines and phaeodarians are open‐ocean planktonic protists found throughout the water column and characterized by complex siliceous skeletons that are formed, at least partly, through the uptake of silicic acid. These protists contribute to the marine organic carbon (C) and biogenic silica (bSi) pools but little is known about their contribution to the silica (Si) biogeochemical cycle. Here we report the first measurements of the Si uptake rate of polycystine and phaeodarian cells from samples collected in the Mediterranean Sea using the 32Si based method. The elementary composition (bSi, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen) of these organisms was also measured. Combining our results with published data on the distribution and abundance...

Response of the protozooplankton assemblage during the European Iron Fertilization Experiment (EIFEX) in the Antarctic circumpolar current ArchiMer
Assmy, Philipp; Cisewski, Boris; Henjes, Joachim; Klaas, Christine; Montresor, Marina; Smetacek, Victor.
Ocean iron fertilization experiments enable the quantitative study of processes shaping the structure and functioning of pelagic ecosystems following perturbation under in situ conditions. EIFEX was conducted within a stationary eddy adjacent to the Antarctic Polar Front over 38 days in February/March 2004 and induced a massive diatom bloom. Here, we present the responses in abundance and biomass of all identifiable protozooplankton taxa (heterotrophic protists ranging from 2 to 500 mm) during the bloom. Acantharia, dinoflagellates and ciliates together contributed >90% of protozooplankton biomass in the upper 100 m throughout the experiment with heterotrophic nanoflagellates, nassellaria, spumellaria, phaeodaria, foraminifera and the taxopodidean...
