Este trabalho apresenta o levantamento florístico e alguns aspectos ecológicos das algas vermelhas do Arquipélago de São Pedro e São Paulo (00º56'N; 29º22'W - 00º 55'N; 29º 20'W). O material foi coletado durante as marés baixas em seis estações, nas zonas entre-marés e infralitoral no mês de outubro de 2003 (estação seca) e abril de 2005 (estação chuvosa). Foram registradas 24 espécies, distribuídas entre as ordens Bonnemaisoniales (uma espécie), Ceramiales (12 espécies), Corallinales (seis espécies), Erythropeltidales (uma espécie), Gelidiales (uma espécie), Rhodymeniales (duas espécies) e Stylonematales (uma espécie). Natural antioxidants found in marine macroalgae are bioactive compounds known to play an important role in the prevention of diseases associated with aging cells protecting them against the oxidative damage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of ethanolic extracts of two species of red seaweeds, Amansia multifida and Meristiella echinocarpa. In vitro antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH radical scavenging assay, ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay, ferrous ion chelating (FIC) assay, β-carotene bleaching (BCB) assay and total phenolic content (TPC) quantification. ABSTRACT This study evaluated the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of fatty acids from the marine red algae Pterocladiella capillacea (S. G. Gmelin) Santelices & Hommersand 1997 and Osmundaria obtusiloba (C. Agardh) R. E. Norris 1991. The gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified nine fatty acids in the two species. The major fatty acids of P. capillacea and O. obtusiloba were palmitic acid, oleic acid, arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. The DPPH radical scavenging capacity of fatty acids was moderate ranging from 25.90% to 29.97%. Sete táxons de rodofíceas marinhas bentônicas são referidos pela primeira vez para o litoral brasileiro: Acrochaetium corymbiferum (Thur. in Le Jolis) Batters, A. liagorae Børgesen, Aglaothamnion herveyi (M. Howe) Aponte, D.L. Ballant. & J.N. Norris, Crouanophycus latiaxis (L.A. Abbott) Athanas., Grallatoria reptans M. Howe e Gelidiella sanctarum Feldmann & Hamel. Gelidiopsis repens (Kütz.) Weber Bosse é pela primeira vez referido para o Oceano Atlântico. As coletas foram realizadas no medio e infralitoral. O material está depositado no Herbário Alexandre Leal Costa. The aim of this study was to determine the yield, chemical composition, specific rotation (SR), infrared (IR) spectroscopy and the effect on bacterial growth of a crude sulfated polysaccharide (SP) from the red marine alga G. ornata (Go). Go-1 (25°C), Go-2 (80°C), and Go-3 (80°C) were sequentially extracted and yielded 9.2%. The contents of sulfate (5.88-10.3%) and proteins (0.1-3.7%) were small. The values of SR were [µ]D20°f -19.0, -51.0, and -56.5, respectively. IR spectrums showed the presence of galactose-4 sulfate and absence of 3,6-anydrogalactose-2 sulfate, galactose-6 sulfate and galactose-2 sulfate. SR and IR techniques confirmed SPs. To cope with the biotic and abiotic stresses experienced within their environment, marine macroalgae have developed certain defence mechanisms including the synthesis of photo-protective molecules against light and particularly harmful UV radiation. The aim of this study was to screen selected red algae, a highly diverse phylogenetic group, for the production of photo-protective molecules. A cladistic analysis, based on a taxonomic revision is carried out for 7 Acanthophora species using 19 characters. Hypotheses on species affinities are based primarily on morphological characters. Because most species show only few distinctive characters, emphasis was placed on features of spine development, either in relation to vegetative or to reproductive structures. The coast of Espirito Santo State is located in a biogeographic transition zone presenting high diversity. A renewed interest in this region occurred in the 1990s, resulting in various new records and new species descriptions added to the Brazilian marine flora.
