Strombomonas carinata sp. nov. and Strombomonas ferrazi sp. nov., two new Euglenophyceae from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Alves-da-Silva,Sandra Maria; Bicudo,Carlos Eduardo de Mattos.
Two species of Strombomonas (Euglenaceae, Euglenophyceae), S. carinata and S. ferrazi, are described and proposed as new to science. Sample units from which specimens were studied were collected from a reservoir (reservoir n. 7) located in an Environment Protection Park ("Parque de Proteção Ambiental") in the South Petrochemical Station ("Pólo Petroquímico do Sul") (29° 53'S, 51° 22'W), in Triunfo, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Physical and chemical data of the water of the system from which the two species were collected are presented.

Palynological analysis of a late Holocene core from Santo Antônio da Patrulha, Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Macedo,Renato B.; Souza,Paulo A.; Bauermann,Soraia G.; Bordignon,Sérgio A.L..
A sedimentar core collected at Santo Antônio da Patrulha, Rio Grande do Sul State, southmost Brazil, was submitted to pollen analysis to provide the vegetational history of this region, and the paleoecological and paleoclimatic changes. A total of 98 taxa of palynomorphs was identified from 35 subsamples. Three radiocarbonic datings were obtained along a section of 115 cm depth, including the basal age of 4730 ± 50 yr BP. Pollen diagrams and cluster analysis were performed based on palynomorphs frequencies, demonstrating five distinct phases (SAP-I to SAP-V), which reflected different paleoecological conditions. The predominance of plants associated with grasslands in the phase SAP-I suggests warm and dry climate conditions. A gradual increasing of...

A new species of Astyanax Baird & Girard (Ostariophysi: Characidae) from the rio Taquari-Antas basin, southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Bertaco,Vinícius A.; Vigo,Anelise C..
A new Astyanax is described from the rio Taquari-Antas basin, rio Jacuí drainage, laguna dos Patos system, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from its congeners inhabiting the rio Uruguay, laguna dos Patos and rio Tramandaí basins by the presence of two vertically elongated humeral spots, the anterior humeral spot with the upper portion wider than the lower portion and slightly directed forward, 37-39 perforated scales along the lateral line, 14 scale rows around caudal peduncle, 2-4 maxillary tricuspid teeth, 24-28 branched anal-fin rays, bony hooks on all fins of mature males, and conspicuous caudal peduncle spot. Furthermore, the new species differs from its congeners by body depth (37.9-45.9% of standard length), preanal...

Cryptoglena, Monomorphina and Phacus (Euglenophyceae) of a reservoir in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Alves-da-Silva,Sandra Maria; Bicudo,Carlos E. de M..
Taxonomic survey of representatives of genera Cryptoglena Ehrenberg emend. Kosmala & Zakry´s, Monomorphina Mereschkowsky emend. Kosmala & Zakry´s and Phacus Dujardin (Euglenaceae, Euglenophyceae) of a reservoir in the municipality of Triunfo (30°02'15" S, 51°13'13" W), state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Samplings were performed at two stations during 14 consecutive months, from February 1995 to March 1996. Sixteen taxa including nine species, three varieties that are not typical of their respective species and one taxonomic forma also not typical of Phacus, two species of Monomorphina and one of Cryptoglena were identified. Phacuspseudobicarinatus is described as a new species. Phacuslongicauda (Ehrenberg) Dujardin var....

Pereira Jr,Joaber; Fernandes,Berenice M.M; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823) from the coast of Rio Grande do Sul State were examined and six trematodes species were recovered: Aponurus laguncula Looss, 1907, A. pyriformis (Linton, 1910), Monascus filiformis (Rudolphi, 1819), Opecoeloides catarinensis Amato, 1983, O. stenosomae Amato, 1983, and Pachycreadium gastrocotylum (Manter, 1940). All species are registered for the first time in Rio Grande do Sul State and M. furnieri represents a new host record for A. laguncula, A. pyriformis and M. filiformis.
