The objective was to evaluate a reforestation carried out by the goldwashers. The studied area is situated along the Gualaxo do Norte river margins in Mariana - MG. The seedlings were received by donation of regional nurseries and were planted on December of 2006 in hole of 25x25 cm and plant spacing 3x2 meters. The evaluations were carried through on March of 2007. The height was measured with metric ribbon and the diameter, 5 cm above the ground, was done by using digital pachymeter. They planted 538 seedlings of 20 different species, pertaining to twelve botanical families. The most abundant species were Enterolobium contortisiliquum (96), Mimosa schomburgkii (76) and Chorisia speciosa (45). It was not possible to identify 19 individuals due to...

Feeding habits of fish from a stream in the savanna of Central Brazil, Araguaia Basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Melo,Cesar Enrique de; Machado,Francisco de Arruda; Pinto-Silva,Vangil.
The objective of the present study was to determine the composition of the diet of fish and its relation to the condition of canopy along a stream in the savanna of Central Brazil. Fish were collected monthly from April 1994 to March 1995. A total of 3872 individuals belonging to 82 species were captured and 1606 of them had their stomach content analysed. Allochthonous resources were widely used by fish. Although some fish groups do present generalist habits, most of the species can be included in well-defined trophic groups. Piscivores were abundant only during the flooding season when they occupied the stream looking for food and reproduction sites. Deforestation of the riparian forest has negative effects on the fish populations that depend on...

Influence of the riparian zone phytophysiognomies on the longitudinal distribution of fishes: evidence from a Brazilian savanna stream Neotropical Ichthyology
Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Romero,Renato de Mei.
The structure and composition of a fish community in a tributary stream of the Aquidauana River, located in the plateau region of the Paraguay River basin, central west Brazil are described, with special attention to the differential effects of the phytophysiognomies of the Cerrado (a tropical savanna), which are predominant in riparian zones all along their longitudinal gradient. A total of 1,166 individuals belonging to 44 species were captured. Similarity analyses of composition and abundance showed two groups: upstream reaches (R1 and R2) and downstream reaches (R3, R4 and R5), which presented 85.8% of the average dissimilarity. Although physical habitat and physicochemical descriptors varied along the longitudinal gradient of the Correntes stream,...

From forests to cattail: how does the riparian zone influence stream fish? Neotropical Ichthyology
Casatti,Lilian; Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Gonçalves-Souza,Thiago; Bessa,Eduardo; Manzotti,Angelo Rodrigo; Gonçalves,Cristina da Silva; Zeni,Jaquelini de Oliveira.
The aim of this study was to verify whether taxonomic and functional composition of stream fishes vary under three different preservation conditions of riparian zone: preserved (PRE), intermediate condition (INT), and degraded (DEG). Five stream stretches representing each condition were selected. Samples were taken from each stream in three occasions during the dry seasons from 2004 to 2007. Electro fishing (PRE and INT), sieves, dip nets, and hand seines (DEG) were used according to the characteristics of each sampled site. Overall, 46 species were registered. Differences in the taxonomic and functional species composition among groups were found, following the condition of riparian zones. The ichthyofauna recorded in the PRE was typical to pristine...

Development of habitat suitability criteria for Neotropical stream fishes and an assessment of their transferability to streams with different conservation status Neotropical Ichthyology
Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Casatti,Lilian.
We assessed the preference of 10 fish species for depth and velocity conditions in forested streams from southeastern Brazil using habitat suitability criteria (HSC curves). We also tested whether preference patterns observed in forested streams can be transferred to deforested streams. We used data from fish sampled in 62 five-meter sites in three forested streams to construct preference curves. Astyanax altiparanae, A. fasciatus, Knodus moenkhausii, and Piabina argentea showed a preference for deep slow habitats, whereas Aspidoras fuscoguttatus, Characidium zebra, Cetopsorhamdia iheringi, Pseudopimelodus pulcher, and Hypostomus nigromaculatus showed an opposite pattern: preference for shallow fast habitats. Hypostomus ancistroides showed a multimodal...

On the nesting biology of eumenine wasps yet again: Minixi brasilianum (de Saussure) is a builder and a renter... at the same time! (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Eumeninae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Hermes,Marcel G.; Araújo,Gustavo; Antonini,Yasmine.
Our understanding of eumenine nesting biology is still elusive. The use of two nesting strategies, namely renting and building, are reported concomitantly for the first time for Minixi brasilianum (de Saussure, 1875). Ecological factors such as resource availability and protection against potential enemies may play an important role in eumenine nesting biology.

Spider species composition in the tree-shrub strata of riparian forests and its microhabitats in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rodrigues,Everton N.L.; Rodrigues,Patrícia E.S.; Mendonça Jr,Milton de S..
ABSTRACT The composition of the spider fauna of riparian forests is insufficiently known. These forests, adjacent to both aquatic and terrestrial environments, are recognised as having important ecosystem functions. We compare the composition of spider assemblages of four riparian forests in different drainage basins, along with their microhabitats (edges and forest interior), in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Sampling was carried out in the riparian forests of the following rivers: Piratini, municipality of Arroio Grande; Camaquã, municipality of Cristal; Sinos, municipality of Parobé, and Maquiné, municipality of Maquiné. Two samples per season were collected in two years, by sampling the tree-shrub strata with a beating tray, following...

Composição da avifauna em duas matas ciliares na bacia do rio Jacaré-Pepira, São Paulo, Brasil Zoologia
Almeida,Maria Elisa de Castro; Vielliard,Jacques M.E; Dias,Manoel Martins.
A quali-quantitative survey was carried out in two riparian forests fragmente (approximately 40 ha each) at Jacaré-Pepira river. Our intention was to characterize its bird community conceming richness, abundance and species occurrence in these areas. The qualitative survey showed 130 species at Santa Elisa (Brotas, São Paulo) and 151 at Morro Chato (Dourado, São Paulo), whereas the quantitative survey revealed the presence of 69 and 75 species at Santa Elisa and Morro Chato, respectively. The small size and the isolation might be responsible for the low number of species found. Observing the abundance index values (IPA) we realize that there are a few number of species with a high IPA on the one hand, while on the other there is a large number of species...

Environmental determinants for natural regeneration of gallery forest at the Cerrado/Amazonia boundaries in Brazil Acta Amazonica
Marimon,Beatriz Schwantes; Felfili,Jeanine Maria; Lima,Edson de Souza; Duarte,Wânia M. Gonçalves; Marimon-Júnior,Ben Hur.
Natural regeneration and structure and their relationship to environmental variables were studied in three sections of a gallery forest, in Eastern Mato Grosso, Brazil (14º43′S and 52º21′W). The assumption was that natural regeneration is constrained by environmental determinants at all stages of development of the tree community. The objective was to analyse the forest structure and to verify the relationship between species distribution and abundance at different stages of regeneration and environmental variables. In each section, 47 contiguous (10x10m) permanent plots were established to sample trees (gbh≥15cm), following a systematic design. Seedlings (0.01 to 1m height), saplings (1.01 to 2m) and poles (from 2.01m height to gbh<15cm) were sampled...

Tree mortality in a riparian forest at Rio Paraguai, Pantanal, Brazil, after an extreme flooding Acta Botanica
Damasceno-Junior,Geraldo Alves; Semir,João; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës dos; Leitão-Filho,Hermógenes de Freitas.
A study was conducted in a riparian forest (Rio Paraguai, Brazil) to verify the vegetation mortality after an exceptional flooding in 1995. Individuals with diameter at breast height > 5 cm were sampled in 108 (10×10m) plots in 1994, and re-sampled in 1996. The total mortality rate was 4.1% per year. The mortality increased with the increasing of topographic positions, at community level, suggesting that places where the flooding is less frequent are more affected by extreme floods.

Seed bank composition in a secondary forest in the Lower Delta of the Paraná River (Argentina) Acta Botanica
Kalesnik,Fábio; Sirolli,Horacio; Collantes,Marta.
The native forests once occupying the coastal levees of the Lower Delta islands of the Paraná River (in Argentina) have been replaced by commercial forests. Many of those forests have been abandoned, resulting in secondary forest formation that is subject to numerous invasive exotic species. A priori observations suggest that successional trends do not lead to recovery of the original forest. The aim of the present study was to analyze the role of invasive exotic species in these environments and the likelihood of recovery of the original forest cover. Therefore, we examined the composition of the seed bank and of the standing vegetation, as well as the population structure of tree species. Secondary forests are described as being in an intermediate...

Costa, Matheus Souza; Smith, Welber Senteio.
This work describes the habits of individuals of the species Astyanax cf. paranae that inhabit Ribeirão do Ferro, a bedside stream. Overall, 92 specimens were analyzed (53 females and 39 males), and the size ranged from class 4.7-5.7 cm to class 10.7-11.7 cm. The females consisted in the larger portion of the samples, except for classes of 4.7-5.7 and 5.7-6.7 cm. The condition factor between males and females (t = 2.1545; p < 0.05) shows distinguished values, with females having higher averages. Fragments of allochthonous insects and plant matter make up the basis of the species' diet. The study showed that the population of A. cf. paranae is predominantly females and have the highest standard for length and weight, which may favor biological...

Structure of potamoplankton along a gradient of preservation of riparian vegetation in subtropical streams Anais da ABC (AABC)
PERESIN,DENISE; TORGAN,LEZILDA C.; SCHULZ,UWE H.; CROSSETTI,LUCIANE O..
Water quality in lotic and lentic systems is greatly influenced by the land use in the adjacent areas. This study was conducted in order to assess whether different degrees of preservation of riparian forest (from well preserved with 30m wide up to degraded with < 5 m wide) influence potamoplankton community structure. The study was conducted in three streams in the upper region of the Rio dos Sinos basin, at four sampling sites, with different width of the forest. Samplings were gathered for abiotic and biological analysis in winter (August 2010) and summer (January/February 2011). The analysis of environmental and biotic variables indicated that seasonality was the main determinant of biomass patterns, regardless of the width of riparian vegetation....
