Diversity of metaxylem vessel elements in three Syagrus palms (Arecaceae) of different habits 39
Pace,Marcelo Rodrigo; Botânico,Marli Pereira; Angyalossy,Veronica.
Vessel elements in Monocotyledons present morphological differences according to the organ where they occur. Usually such diff erences have been explained from an evolutionary perspective, with few data on how the vessel elements could be infl uenced by the diff erent functions of organs and the growth habits of the plants. To address this question, three vegetative organs of palms of the same genus, Syagrus, growing in similar environments, but with different habits, were analyzed. Accordingly, we aimed to detect whether the vessel elements would present similar features in all species or whether the vessel elements would change according to their different habits. We found that the width and type of perforation plates varied in the same way among all...

Ecological aspects of Langsdorffia hypogaea (Balanophoraceae) parasitism in the Pantanal wetlands 39
Lehn,Carlos Rodrigo; Salis,Suzana Maria; Mattos,Patrícia Póvoa.
Most studies on holoparasitic plants have focused on taxonomic or systematic issues. The objective of this study was to examine the ecological aspects of parasitism of Langsdorffia hypogaea (Balanophoraceae) in the Pantanal wetlands. Individuals of L. hypogaea were dug out by hand and the host trees were identified. Eighty-eight percent of host trees exhibited zoochory dispersal syndrome. Protium heptaphyllum and Cordiera sessilis represented 50% of the sampled trees. Both species are evergreen and are preferentially shade-tolerant species growing under the canopy of other trees. Fecal sample of collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu) had seeds from both the host tree (Protium sp.) and the parasite L. hypogaea. We therefore propose the hypothesis that P. tajacu...

Structural characterization of vegetative organs of the endangered Brazilian native species Hesperozygis ringens (Benth.) Epling 42
PINHEIRO,CARLOS G.; OLIVEIRA,JOÃO MARCELO S. DE; HEINZMANN,BERTA M..
Abstract The aim of this study was to describe the structural characterization of Hesperozygis ringens (Benth.) Epling vegetative organs. For this purpose, leaves, stems and roots of the endangered Lamiaceae were collected from a population located in Santo Antão, Santa Maria municipality, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Results demonstrated that the H. ringens leaf blade presents glandular and non-glandular trichomes as well as two morphs of diallelocytic stomata, which are usually found above the epidermis level. The petiole is concave on ventral face and convex on its dorsal face, containing glandular and non-glandular trichomes as well as stomata in the epidermis. These types of trichomes were also detected in the stem. In addition, the presence of...

The Ca2+ pump inhibitor, thapsigargin, inhibits root gravitropism in Arabidopsis thaliana 48
URBINA,DANIELA C; SILVA,HERMAN; MEISEL,LEE A.
Thapsigargin, a specific inhibitor of most animal intracellular SERCA-type Ca2+ pumps present in the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum, was originally isolated from the roots of the Mediterranean plant Thapsia gargancia L. Here, we demonstrate that this root-derived compound is capable of altering root gravitropism in Arabidopsis thaliana. Thapsigargin concentrations as low as 0.1 µM alter root gravitropism whereas under similar conditions cyclopiazonic acid does not. Furthermore, a fluorescently conjugated thapsigargin (BODIPY FL thapsigargin) suggests that target sites for thapsigargin are located in intracellular organelles in the root distal elongation zone and the root cap, regions known to regulate root gravitropism

Spatial variability of some biometricattributes of sugarcane plants (variety IACSP93-3046) and its relation to physical and chemical soil attributes 53
Grego,Célia Regina; Vieira,Sidney Rosa; Xavier,Mauro Alexandre.
Tests to evaluate competition between plants, in general do not consider the soil spatial variability, nevertheless, the uniformity rarely is present and can not be assumed without verification. The aim of this work was to apply geostatistics to verify the spatial variability of the soil in an experimental field near Ribeirão Preto, SP, with sugarcane variety IACSP93-3046. Ninety seven geo-referenced samples, placed at distances of 10 m, were collected for soil chemical analysis, soil resistance to penetration and biometric evaluation of the sugar cane plant included number of tillers, stalk diameter, stalk height, estimated productivity (TSSe) and root density. Geostatistics has been applied by means of semivariogram, data interpolation via kriging and...

Rice genotypes for drought tolerance: morphological and transcriptional evaluation of auxin-related genes 53
Madabula,Frederico Pedro; Santos,Railson Schreinert dos; Machado,Nata; Pegoraro,Camila; Kruger,Mariana Madruga; Maia,Luciano Carlos da; Sousa,Rogerio Oliveira de; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de.
ABSTRACT Drought stress affects crop quality and productivity. The challenge of increasing food availability for a growing worldwide demand relies on the development of tolerant cultivars that will need to be adapted to arid and semi-arid areas. In order to help the understanding of rice response to stress, the phenotypic response of 6 Brazilian rice cultivars and 2 different crosses between them were characterized under drought conditions. Since gene regulation is an important part of root morphological responses to stressful conditions, 4 genes related to auxin response and root modifications (OsGNOM1 CRL4, OsIAA1, OsCAND1 and OsRAA1) were evaluated. The expression of these genes was analyzed in stressed rice using public available microarray data and...

Ferulic acid depletion by cultured soybean seedlings under action of glucose and methionine 52
Herrig,Vanessa; Silva,Hélio Cândido da; Ferrarese,Maria de Lourdes Lucio; Ferrarese-Filho,Osvaldo.
Cultured soybean seedlings were used to investigate how glucose or methionine influenced depletion of ferulic acid. Three-day-old seedlings were grown in hydroponic solution containing ferulic acid plus glucose or methionine, and the level of the phenolic acid were monitored in the nutrient culture. The results showed that ferulic acid depletion was more rapid in the presence of those compounds. After 6 h, the increase caused by glucose (0.01 and 0.05 mM) was more pronounced than methionine in the same concentrations. On the other hand, methionine (0.1 and 0.2 mM) increased depletion more significantly than glucose. Results suggested that both compounds might to increase the allelopathic effects of ferulic acid in the seedlings.

In a greenhouse experiment, morpho-anatomical and micromorphometrical analyses of two soybean cultivars, MG/BR46 (Conquista) and BR16-tolerant and sensitive to drought, respectively-were used to study their water-deficit-tolerance strategies. Drought treatments were applied at reproductive stages from R2 to R7, where evaluations were conducted at 30 days and 45 days after stress started, respectively. The total length of Conquista plants (shoot + root) was greater than of BR16 plants. Pod dry weight was adversely affected due to the lack of moisture, decreasing productivity even of Conquista plants. Both the cultivars had normal development of root hairs; however, it was observed a decrease in the cortex:central cylinder ratio in BR16 stressed for 30 days,...

Vegetative propagation in Piperaceae species 52
Souza,Luiz Antonio de; Moscheta,Ismar Sebastião; Mourão,Káthia Socorro Mathias; Albiero,Adriana Lenita Meyer; Iwazaki,Maísa de Carvalho; Oliveira,Jonathas Henrique Georg de; Rosa,Sônia Maciel da.
Piperaceae species of forest remnants of Maringá, Paraná, Brazil present vegetative propagation through root or stem (stolon). This reproduction type was verified in Piper amalago L., P. arboreum Aublet, P. xylosteoides (Kunth) Steud., Peperomia parnassifolia Miq. and Ottonia martiana Miq. Root and stem branches of these species were analyzed anatomically. Results indicated that the vegetative propagation in Piperaceae should be studied in other forests. New and additional studies should be made if the structural variations were induced environmentally or fixed genetically.

Consumption of ferulic and p-hydroxybenzoic acids by soybean root tips 52
Silva,Hélio Cândido da; Herrig,Vanessa; Ferrarese,Maria de Lourdes L.; Ferrarese-Filho,Osvaldo.
Depletion method was used to describe how soybean root consumed ferulic and p-hydroxybenzoic acids in nutrient culture. The results showed that excised cultured soybean roots consumed these allelochemicals very rapidly. At concentrations between 0.1 and 1.0 mM, roots consumed 50% or more of ferulic acid after 6-h depletion. Although consumption started only after 3 h, similar behavior was verified with p-hydroxybenzoic acid.

The architecture of Phaseolus vulgaris root is altered when a defense response is elicited by an oligogalacturonide 61
Mata,Georgina Hernández; Sepúlveda,Baldemar; Richards,Alan; Soriano,Eva.
Phytoalexin accumulation is one of a myriad of plant defense responses; these responses can be elicited by pathogens or molecules such as oligogalacturonides (OGAs). Phytoalexin production has been considered a vital component of the resistance mechanisms that determine the outcome of many plant-microbe interactions. Besides inducing defense responses, OGAs have been shown to affect plant development, which normally is controlled by plant hormones, particularly auxin. In this work we measured phytoalexin accumulation in roots of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seedlings grown in the presence or absence of the auxin 3-naphtalenacetic acid (NAA) and treated with a decagalacturonide (OGA10). We found that OGA10 (0.01 mM) caused phytoalexin production and also...

ABSTRACT: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been attracted more scientific attentions due to its critical role in enhancement of drought tolerance of plants for growth and vegetation restoration in karst fragile ecosystem. However, scientists know little about the AMF composition and diversity occurring in root systems of mulberry (Morus sp.), and in karst habitats which return land use from mulberry forestry, as well as the effects of soil environment change on the diversity of the AMF communities. To understand: (1) the AMF community composition and diversity at different stage of returning cropland to forest; and (2) the effects of soil environment change on the diversity of the AMF communities, soil and mulberry root samples were collected from...

Test for alternative indicator of soybean sowing depth 70
SOUZA,NÁTALI M.; WEIRICH NETO,PEDRO H..
Among studies focused on increasing soybean grain yield, the ones related to sowing process are the most significant. Considering that soybean has an epigeal emergence, it becomes difficult to hint at the length covered by hypocotyl up to soil surface, or the actual planting depth. This study aimed to find an indicator that allows the identification of an ideal soybean planting depth. For this purpose, two complementary assays has been carried out in a greenhouse. The first aimed to identify structures that could be indicators of seed planting depth, on a medium-textured soil from Campos Gerais region, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Spring NK 8350 cultivar seeds were sown at five theoretical depths (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 cm). As seedlings emerged, the...
