Phytosociology of the remaining xerophytic woodland associated to an environmental gradient at the banks of the São Francisco river - Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Nascimento,Clóvis E.S.; Rodal,Maria J.N.; Cavalcanti,Antônio C..
Floristic and phytosociological surveys were carried out for 12 months in the Embrapa-SPSB, Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil. A transect was laid on starting at the river bank extending for 790 m away from the river and divided into 140 10 × 10 m contiguous plots. In each plot, all standing plants, alive or dead, with stem diameter at soil level > 3 cm and total height > 1 m were sampled. Along this transect, an elevation range of 9.40 m was registered and five topographical environments were identified: riverside (MR), dike (D), floodable depression (DI), boundary terrace (TL) - all of them belonging to the fluvial terrace with Fluvic Neosol and Haplic Cambisol both silty textured eutrophic soils - and the inlander tableland (TS), with medium...

Does predator benefits prey? Commensalism between Corynoneura Winnertz (Diptera, Chironomidae) and Corydalus Latreille (Megaloptera, Corydalidae) in Southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Callisto,Marcos; Goulart,Michael D.C.; Moreno,Pablo; Martins,Rogério P..
Commensalism between Corydalus Latreille, 1802 (Megaloptera, Corydalidae) and Corynoneura Winnertz, 1846 (Diptera, Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae) larvae was recorded in Indaiá stream, at 1,380 m a.s.l. (Parque Nacional da Serra do Cipó, 19º-20ºS, 43º-44ºW) and in the headwaters of São Francisco river, at 1,300-1,700 m a.s.l. (Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra, 20º00'-20º30'S, 46º15'-47º00'W), in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Seventy eight Corydalus larvae (range 22-88 mm) were sampled: 61 in the Indaiá stream and 17 in other two streams. Twelve Corydalus larvae (22-79 mm) in the Indaiá stream and three out of 15 larvae in the headwaters of São Francisco river (38-50 mm) had Corynoneura, larvae and pupae on their gills (3rd to 6th) and a few larvae attached...

Neoechinorhynchus pimelodi sp.n. (Eoacanthocephala, Neoechinorhynchidae) parasitizing Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, "mandi-amarelo" (Siluroidei, Pimelodidae) from the basin of the São Francisco river, Três Marias, Minas Gerais, Brazil Zoologia
Brasil-Sato,Marília de Carvalho; Pavanelli,Gilberto Cezar.
Neoechinorhynchus pimelodi sp.n. is described as the first record of Acanthocephala in Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède. 1803, collected in the São Francisco river, Três Marias, Minas Gerais. The new species is distinguished from other of the genus by the three circles of hooks of different sizes, and by the eggs measurements. The hooks measuring 100-1 12 (105), 32-40 (36) and 20-27 (23) in length in the males and 102-142 (129), 34-55 (47) and 27-35 (29) in length in the females for the anterior, middle and posterior circles. The eggs measuring 15-22 (18) in length and 12-15 (14) in width, with concentric layers of texture smooth, enveloping the acanthor.

Reproductive activity of ‘piau gordura’ Leporinus piau was studied using biometric, macroscopic and microscopic analysis. A total of 74 specimens of L. piau were collected quarterly from January to December 2005 in a small deactivated  hydropower plant located at Jorge Pequeno Stream and preserved in a fixative solution until analysis. The alterations after fixation were evaluated. The stages of gonadal maturation were determined by histology and gonadosomatic index (GSI). The females and males in the spawning capable and regressing stage were registered from October to December. L. piau is total spawning and the HSI (hepatossomatic index), SRI (stomach repletion index) and CFI (coelomic fat index) of females and males did not showed a statistical...

Faria,Luciene Carrara Paula; Carrara,Lucas Aguiar; Amaral,Frederico Queiroga do; Vasconcelos,Marcelo Ferreira de; Diniz,Mauro Guimarães; Encarnação,Christiane Duarte; Hoffmann,Diego; Gomes,Henrique Belfort; Lopes,Leonardo Esteves; Rodrigues,Marcos.
The Cerrado is now considered the most threatened biome of South America. Northwestern Minas Gerais state, in southeastern Brazil, still harbors large areas of extreme importance for biological conservation of the Cerrado. The current study provides the first thorough assessment of the avifauna of a large remnant of Cerrado vegetation in this region, the Fazenda Brejão. Data are based on a bird survey conducted from November 1998 to January 2007. This area is a private property of 20.000 ha preserved that lies in a region recognized for its palm groves, a pristine Cerrado (savannah-like vegetation) and gallery forests. Bird censuses were carried out through random transects censuses, mist-net captures and recording bird vocalizations. It was recorded 273...
