The weathering of petroleum was monitored by high temperature high resolution gas-liquid chromatography in northern Brittany seashore sediments, either contaminated by the Amoco Cadiz oil or experimentally polluted. Most aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were relatively rapidly degraded, but some compounds like isoprenoids (pristane and phytane), triterpanes and alkylated phenanthrenes and dibenzothiophenes appeared to be more recalci­trant. In high energy sites (Roscoff beach), cleaning of the sediments was achieved between 12 and 18 months, whereas the Abers muddy sediments contained after two years bacterially neosynthesised very long chain n-alkanes (>n-C50). While dominant processes and time-scales controlling denudation rates are intensively debated, past terrigenous input remains difficult to detect from the marine sedimentary record, especially during the Quaternary because of the strong overprint exerted by the sea-level changes. In this study, we focus on the Var sediment-routing system (SE France) where the absence of a continental shelf off the Var river mouth (Ligurian margin, NW Mediterranean Sea) resulted in the direct connection between the Var River and the deep basin during both highstand and lowstand conditions. Impact de l'émissaire de Toulon-Est sur les sédiments de la Grande Rade. Aspects granulométriques, chimiques, bactériologiques et toxicologiques ArchiMer

L'étude des apports particulaires de la station d'épuration de Toulon-Est et des polluants qui leur sont associés a permis d'acquérir des informations concernant leur impact sur les fonds de la Grande Rade. Une campagne de prélèvement des sédiments superficiels fait apparaître, à travers la granulométrie, l'analyse des contaminants organiques et métalliques, la caractérisation de la matière organique, la répartition des bactéries d'origine fécale et des tests d'embryotoxicité sur des oursins, une zone d'impact maximal dans le Sud-Ouest du rejet. Celui-ci paraît limité à une distance allant de 500 à 1 500 mètres, avec des maxima entre 250 et 750 mètres, selon les traceurs et la direction envisagée.
