Evaluation of vegetation indices and plant growth regulator use on the rooting of azalea cuttings Horticultura Brasileira
Hou,Ping-Cheng; Lin,Kuan-Hung; Huang,Yen-Jung; Wu,Chun-Wei; Chang,Yu-Sen.
ABSTRACT The objective of our study was to develop a protocol enabling the use of vegetation indices to evaluate the rooting of Azalea (Rhododendron pulchrum cv. Sweet) cuttings. Six root growth parameters were recorded after exposing those cuttings to rooting media for 47 days. Among plants with different soil-plant analysis development (SPAD) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values, those with higher values exhibited significantly higher number of roots, root length, and root dry weight, suggesting that reflectance indices were useful in measuring the root growth parameters of the cuttings. Another aim of this work was to study the effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs) on rooting for cutting propagation. Azalea cuttings were soaked...

Hyperhydricity control of in vitro shoots of Turbinicarpus valdezianus (Möller) GL & F Phyton
García Osuna,HT; Benavides Mendoza,A; Escobedo Bocardo,L; Villarreal Quintanilla,JA; Cornejo Oviedo,E.
Turbinicarpus valdezianus is a species under special protection, according to the current law NOM-059-ECOL-2010. It spreads preferably through shoot proliferation in vitro. A common problem associated with the propagation of this species by tissue culture is the hyperhydricity or excess of water accumulation in the tissues of shoots explants. The literature on this topic indicates that such response is related with oxidative stress. Because of this, the effects of inhibitors of the gibberellins [paclobutrazol (PBZ) and calcium prohexadione (PCa)] and salicylic (SA) and benzoic acids (BA) were tested to diminish the hiperhydrycity of the sprouts, which was measured after twelve weeks of study initiation. The treatment with PBZ (3.4 x...

Application of low concentrations of salicilyc acid increases the number of flowers in Petunia hibrida Agrociencia
Martín-Mex,Rodolfo; Vergara-Yoisura,Silvia; Nexticapán-Garcés,Ángel; Larqué-Saavedra,Alfonso.
The effect of applications of low concentrations of salicylic acid (SA) on the number of flowers and the date of flower initiation in Petunia (Petunia híbrida) in reported in this paper. Concentrations of 1 μM to lpM of SA were spread on three occasions to the shoot of plantlets cultivated in greenhouse conditions. Analysis of the results showed that all the concentrations of SA tested increased the number of open flowers per plant. Concentrations as low as lpM or 0.lnM induced positive riesponses by 33 % and 37 %, as compared with that of the control. The highest concentration of 1 μM increased not only the number of flowers by 72 % but also induced early flowering by six days.

DURANGO,DIEGO; MURILLO,JENNIFER; ECHEVERRI,FERNANDO; ESCOBAR,GUSTAVO; QUIÑONES,WINSTON.
Abstract Time-course and dose-response experiments were carried out to establish the ability for synthesizing isoflavonoids of soybean seedlings (cv. Soyica P34) treated with salicylic (SA) and isonicotinic acids (INA). Then, 25 structurally-related compounds were evaluated for their isoflavonoid-eliciting activity. Next, the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of EtOAc-soluble fraction from soybean seedlings treated with some synthetic elicitors were determined. Results showed that the concentration of isoflavonoids in soybean seedlings was significantly increased by the application of SA and INA. The major isoflavonoids detected were the malonyl-glycosidic isoflavones, followed by genistin and daidzin. The isoflavone aglycones (genistein, daidzein,...

Salicylic acid permeation: A comparative study with different vehicles and membranes Biocell
Olivella,Mónica S.; Debattista,Nora B.; Pappano,Nora B..
Considering the skin´s function, different dermal pharmaceutical forms can be developed according to the type of therapeutic activity, active principle and excipients involved in the formulation, such as “transdermal preparations”. In the present study, the permeation parameters of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug, salicylic acid (SA) through synthetic membrane, polyvinyliden difluoride, and a biological membrane, egg shell membrane, with different vehicles, propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol and carbopol gel, were determined. The reported physicochemical parameters of SA from CG were significantly higher than those obtained using PG and IP. This is attributed to the lipophilic nature of the vehicle that facilitates the release and penetration of...

Control of brown spot pathogen of rice (Bipolaris oryzae) using some phenolic antioxidants BJM
Shabana,Y.M.; Abdel-Fattah,G.M.; Ismail,A.E.; Rashad,Y.M..
Bipolaris oryzae is the causal agent of rice brown spot disease and is responsible for significant economic losses. In order to control this disease, three phenolic antioxidants were tested (salicylic acid, benzoic acid and hydroquinone). The antifungal activity of the tested substances were investigated against B. oryzae at different concentrations in vitro, as well as the efficacy of their exogenous application in controlling rice brown spot disease under field conditions. In vitro, benzoic acid or salicylic acid at 9 mM completely inhibited the growth of B. oryzae. Under field conditions, spraying of benzoic acid at 20 mM led to a significant reduction in disease severity (DS) and disease incidence (DI) on the plant leaves, in addition to a significant...

Salicylic acid degradation from aqueous solutions using Pseudomonas fluorescens HK44: parameters studies and application tools BJM
Silva,Tatyane R.; Valdman,Erika; Valdman,Belkis; Leite,Selma G.F..
The optimal conditions for salicylic acid biodegradation by Pseudomonas fluorescens HK44 were determined in this study with the intention to create a microbial sensor. Kinetic experiments permitted a definition of 60 and 30min the time needed to achieve the maximum degradation of salicylic acid presented in a medium with and without yeast extract, respectively. The degradation in medium without yeast extract and the quantification by spectrophotometry 230 nm were selected to be used in further tests. The use of preactivated cells or on the exponential growth phase showed better salicylic acid degradation percentages when compared to nonactivated cells or on the stationary growth state. Finally, the best cellular concentration used on the salicylic acid...

Changes in growth, pigment content and antioxidants in the root and leaf tissues of wheat plants under the influence of exogenous salicylic acid Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Sahu,Gopal Krishna; Sabat,Surendra Chandra.
The effect of various concentrations of salicylic acid (SA) on the growth, pigment content and the activity of antioxidants was investigated in the laboratory grown wheat plants. The root and shoot growth was affected at higher concentration of SA in early days of growth. The activities of catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and guaicol-specific peroxidase (POX) declined with the application of SA (50, 500 and 1000 µM), the decrease being more pronounced with the increase in SA concentrations both in the root and leaf tissues. On the other hand superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased with the application of SA. At low concentrations, SA has no effect on the activities of these enzymes in vitro. Salicylic acid at higher concentrations (5- and...

Induction of resistance in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) against Ascochyta rabiei by applying chemicals and plant extracts Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Usman Ghazanfar,M; Wakil,Waqas; Talib Sahi,Shahbaz.
Since new fungicides are scarce in the market and because of environmental problems, researchers are now emphasizing other alternatives, such as the genetic potential of plants, resistance against pathogens, and the use of biotic and abiotic agents to develop induced or acquired resistance. We investigated the role of resistance-inducing substances (chemicals and plant extracts) in three chickpea cvs. C-44, Pb-91, and Bittle-98 in field experiments against Ascochyta blight disease. These cultivars were selected on the basis of better yield potential shown in previous experiments. Aqueous solution of salicylic acid (SA) at 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mM; acibenzolar-S-methyl (Bion®, ASM) at 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 mM; and KOH at 25, 50, and 75 mM were applied, whereas...

Mitigating effect of salicylic acid and nitrate on water relations and osmotic adjustment in maize, cv. Lluteño exposed to salinity Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Escobar,Hugo; Bustos,Richard; Fernández,Felipe; Cárcamo,Henry; Silva,Herman; Frank,Nicolás; Cardemil,Liliana.
We analyzed the mitigating effect of NO3 - and salicylic acid (SA) on the detrimental effects of salt stress by studying the water status of plants of maize grown in Hoagland's medium with NaCl 100 mM as the saline component, to which SA and NO3 - were added in different concentrations as mitigating agents. We evaluated water potential Ψw, osmotic potential Ψs, relative water content (RWC), turgor potential (Ψp ), and the osmotic adjustment (OA) of leaves and roots. SA 0.5 mM mitigated the effects of salinity by increasing the Ψw of the leaf, the Ψsof theroot, the Ψpof the leaf, RWC and OA of the leaf; while NO3 was only effective in combination with SA, mitigating the effects of salinity by increasing...

Pedroso,Rita Cássia Nascimento; Branquinho,Núbia Angélica de Ávila; Hara,Alessandra Cristina Boffino de Almeida Monteiro; Silva,Fabiano Guimarães; Kellner Filho,Luis Claudio; Silva,Marcio Luís Andrade; Cunha,Wilson Roberto; Pauletti,Patricia Mendonça; Januário,Ana Helena.
ABSTRACT: Hyptis marrubioides (Lamiaceae) is a medicinal plant that is native from Brazilian Cerrado. In vitro propagation techniques make use of elicitors to alter metabolic pathways, affecting how molecules are produced both qualitatively and quantitatively. This research aimed to evaluate how abiotic elicitors salicylic acid (SA) and silver nitrate (SN) at concentrations of 30µM or 60µM influence Hyptis marrubioides seedling growth by two different in vitro culture methods. The rutin content was quantified by HPLC-DAD. Compared to an untreated culture, the H. marrubioides methanolic extracts cultured in MS medium for 10 days followed by culture in MS medium containing SN (30µM) for 20 days had 1.28 times higher rutin content. In a second experiment,...
