The addition of salt to the water has been used to mitigate stress and improve survival in fishes. This study investigated the effects of sodium chloride (0.0, 1.0, 3.0 and 6.0 g/l) on levels of plasma cortisol, glucose, tryacilglycerol, total protein, hematocrit, hemoglobin, erythrocyte number, liver glycogen and lipid, and muscle lipid in adult matrinxã(Brycon amazonicum) after a 4-h transport and during a 96-h recovery period. Fish were sampled before and after transport, and 24 and 96 h of the recovery period. Plasma cortisol was higher than initial condition immediately after transportation, except in fish transported in 3.0 and 6.0 g/l of salt. A similar pattern was observed for blood glucose but fish transported in water with 0.0, 1.0 and 3.0 g/l of... |

Accumulating evidence has suggested that high salt and potassium might be associated with vascular function. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of salt intake and potassium supplementation on brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (PWV) in Chinese subjects. Forty-nine subjects (28-65 years of age) were selected from a rural community of northern China. All subjects were sequentially maintained on a low-salt diet for 7 days (3.0 g/day NaCl), a high-salt diet for an additional 7 days (18.0 g/day NaCl), and a high-salt diet with potassium supplementation for a final 7 days (18.0 g/day NaCl+4.5 g/day KCl). Brachial-ankle PWV was measured at baseline and on the last day of each intervention. Blood pressure levels were significantly increased from... |

The aim of this work was to evaluate the osmotic dehydration of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) using hypertonic sucrose solutions, with or without NaCl, at three different concentrations, at 40 °C. Highest water losses were obtained when the mixture of sucrose and NaCl was used. The addition of NaCl to osmotic solutions increases the driving force of the process and it is verified that the osmotic dehydration process is mainly influenced by changes in NaCl concentration, but the positive effect of the salt-sucrose interaction on soluble solids also determined the decrease of solid gain when solutes were at maximum concentrations. Mass transfer kinetics were modeled according to Peleg, Fick and Page's equations, which presented good fittings of the... |

Attempting to improve reproduction performance and ichthyo prophylaxis, this study evaluated the effects of maintaining silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) broodstock in different saline concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8‰) on gametes quality and reproductive viability. The results showed that sperm percent motility did not change between 0 and 4‰, but it was reduced at 6‰, and sperm became immotile at 8‰ salinity. Sperm motility time was increased (almost five fold) at 6‰. Salinities up to 4‰ prevented fertilization and hatching, proving their deleterious effects on oocytes and embryos. Therefore, media up to 4‰ salinity may be an alternative for icthyo prophylaxis, although fertilization and incubation must be done in freshwater medium |

Abstract Current diets contain an increasing amount of salt and high fructose corn syrup, but it remains unclear as to how dietary salt and fructose affect organ function at the molecular level. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that consumption of high salt and fructose diets would increase tissue-specific expression of two critical osmotically-regulated genes, nuclear factor of activated T-cells 5 (NFAT5) and aldose reductase (AR). Fifty Sprague-Dawley rats were placed on a control, 4% NaCl, 8% NaCl, or 64% fructose diet for eight weeks. Fourteen different tissue samples were harvested and snap-frozen, followed by RNA purification, cDNA synthesis, and NFAT5 and AR gene expression quantification by real-time PCR.Our findings demonstrate that NFAT5... |

In this study, the effect of arginine (Arg) of the NaCl induced growth inhibition was examined for Sta. carnosus and P.acidilactici which isolated from the commercial starter culture of fermented sausage. When Arg and/or NaCl were added to MRS broth and cultured with shaking, the differences were not recorded in the broth pH,the nitrate reduction activity, and the protein degradation activity. However, the viable count of both strains had decreased by adding NaCl. The addition of Arg has increased the number of recovered cell and it was remarkable in Sta.carnosus. Arg added broth was metabolized by both strain, the content of Arg in broth was decreased, especially it was disappeared in cultured broth of Sta.carnosus. SEM photographs showed an enlarged and... |

The objective of the experiments was to determine the influence of the effects of different salt levels (zero, 15, 30, 45 and 60mM NaCl) on the physiological quality of seeds of two barley cultivars (BRS 195 and AF 98067). Assays were conducted to evaluate salt stress on germination and vigor. The germination and germination rate of the barley seeds decreased as salt levels increased, reducing the seed viability and vigor. The salinity affected the membrane integrity, mainly in AF 98067 that showed more sensitivity to salt stress. |

The objective of this experiment was to determine the influence of different salt levels (zero, 15, 30, 45 and 60mM NaCl) on seed physiological quality of two wheat cultivars (BRS 177 and BRS 179). SUMMARIZE METHODOLOGY. The results allow the following conclusions: the physiological quality (germination and vigor) of wheat seeds, cultivars BRS 179 and BRS 177, decrease with the increase of the salinity. The wheat seeds cv. BRS 179 performs better than BRS 177, mainly in higher salt concentrations (³ 45mM of NaCl). The electric conductivity of wheat seeds increases in function of the increment of the saline concentrations. |

Birds living in desert environments have been the preferred models for the study of physiological adaptations to water scarcity. Passerine birds living in marine coastal habitats face similar problems, yet physiological adaptations to water conservation in such species have been poorly documented. We measured total evaporative water loss (TEWL) and rates of oxygen consumption (VO2) in three species of passerine birds dwelling in marine and fresh water habitats. Mass specific total evaporative water loss was significantly lower in the marine species, Cinclodes nigrofumosus, than in species inhabiting areas near freshwater sources. We found a positive relationship between TEWL and VO2. The ratio of TEWL to VO2 (relative evaporative water loss, RTEWL) showed... |
