Germination responses of Lycium humile, an extreme halophytic Solanaceae: understanding its distribution in saline mudflats of the southern Puna Acta Botanica
Palchetti,María Virginia; Llanes,Analía; Reginato,Mariana; Barboza,Gloria; Luna,Virginia; Cantero,Juan José.
ABSTRACT Although knowledge about halophytic Solanaceae is scarce, it is known that several species within genus Lycium tolerate salinity. Lycium humile grows in highly saline soils in mudflats near saline Andean lakes. This study evaluated the germination responses of L. humile under different scarification methods, photoperiods, temperatures and saline conditions and, simultaneously, tested seedling survival under different iso-osmotic conditions. Dormancy and germination were found to be regulated by interactions with different factors, with the highest germination percentages being obtained by immersion in sulfuric acid, with a temperature of 25 °C and a temperature regime of 5/25 °C, under which seeds were neutrally photoblastic. As osmotic potential...

Argentinean cultivars of Vitis vinifera grow better than European ones when cultured in vitro under salinity Biocell
Cavagnaro,Juan B.; Ponce,María T.; Guzmán,Javier; Cirrincione,Miguel A..
Argentinean Vitis vinifera cultivars although originated from Europe, have clear ampelographic and genotypic differences as compared with the European cultivars currently used in wine making. In vitro evaluation of salt tolerance has been used in many species. Our hypothesis was that Argentinean cultivars are more tolerant to salinity than European ones. Three European cultivars, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay and four Argentinean cultivars, Cereza, Criolla Chica, Pedro Gimenez and Torrontes Riojano were tested by in vitro culture. Treatments included: 1) Control, 2) 60 mEq/L of a mixture of three parts of NaCl and one part of CaCl2 and 3) 90 mEq/L of the salt mixture. Results from two experiments (I and II) are reported. No differences were...

Microorganisms associated to tomato seedlings growing in saline culture act as osmoprotectant BJM
Cortés-Jiménez,Daniel; Gómez-Guzmán,Abril; Iturriaga,Gabriel; Suárez,Ramón; Montero Alpírez,Gisela; M.E. Escalante,Froylán.
Less than 0.5% of total water in the world is available for human consumption and agriculture. The major part of the world's water is saline and salinity in soils interferes in germination of seeds and the posterior development of the plant. In order to increase the osmotolerance of tomato, seedlings were associated with Azospirillum brasilense Cd, Azospirillum brasilense Cd transformed bacteria with a plasmid harboring a trehalose biosynthesis gene-fusion or Chlorella vulgaris. Two plant culture media: Hydroponic and Murashige and Skoog were tested. In the first set of studies seedlings were associated to single free cells meanwhile in a second set single and combined free cells were studied. A positive interaction between transformed Azospirillum and...

Physiological and biochemical traits as tools to screen sensitive and resistant varieties of tomatoes exposed to salt stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Fariduddin,Qazi; Mir,Bilal Ahmad; Ahmad,Aqil.
The present study was conducted to evaluate salt tolerance in seven different pure-line cultivars of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) viz. K-21, Pusa Ruby, Pusa Gorav, Hera research, Selection N5, PKM-1 and S-22 based on several physiological and biochemical traits. Seedlings were transplanted to the pots, being exposed to different salinity levels in the form of NaCl (0, 50, 100, or 150 mM) at a 35-day stage of growth for six days. The plants exposed to salt stress presented a significant decline in growth, photosynthetic parameters, maximum quantum yield of PSII and leaf water relations, which were drastically reduced in variety S-22, while variety K-21 was the least affected. Electrolyte leakage was superior in proportion to an increase in salinity...

Changes in physiological indicators associated with salt tolerance in two contrasting cashew rootstocks Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Ferreira-Silva,Sérgio L.; Silveira,Joaquim A.G.; Voigt,Eduardo L.; Soares,Lucilene S.P.; Viégas,Ricardo A..
In order to identify salt tolerance indicators, several physiological variables were evaluated in two contrasting cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) rootstocks in response to salt stress. The tolerant CCP 09 genotype showed better growth performance after two weeks under a large range of NaCl salinity (50, 100, 150 and 200 mM). The NaCl treatments induced a significant drop in transpiration as a consequence of an increased stomatal resistance in both genotypes. No significant differences in Na+, Cl, and K+ concentrations were found in both roots and leaves regardless of rootstocks. The tolerant genotype exhibited lower relative water content and less negative leaf osmotic potential as compared with the sensitive genotype and, therefore, these variables...

Transcriptional responses of Rosa rugosa to salt stress and salt shock Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Reis,Michele Valquíria dos; Rouhana,Laura Vaughn; Paiva,Patrícia Duarte de Oliveira; Silva,Diogo Pedrosa Correia da; Paiva,Renato; Korban,Schuyler.
ABSTRACT Rugosa rugosa has high tolerance to various stresses; however, the molecular mechanisms of this behavior under adverse conditions are unclear. The objective of this study is to investigate expression patterns of stress-related genes in response to salinity stress. Changes in transcript levels of R. rugose, grown under different salt stress conditions (0, 25, 50, and 100 mM NaCl) over a long exposure period (30 days), have been investigated. In addition, the effects of salt shock stress on seedlings exposed to a high level (200 mM) of NaCl for a relatively short duration (3 h) have also been investigated. Expression levels of selected differentially expressed genes have been determined using relative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction...

Certain, Cassandre; Della Patrona, Luc; Gunkel-grillon, Peggy; Leopold, Audrey; Soudant, Philippe; Le Grand, Fabienne.
Cultivation of salt-tolerant crops help to face to irreversible global salinization of freshwater and soils. In New-Caledonia, three halophytes are candidates for saline crops, Salsola australis R.Br., Suaeda maritima (L.) Dumort and Enchylaena tomentosa R.Br. Their success and quality depend yet on availabilities of salinity and essential nutrients in agrosystems. So, we investigated effects of three salinities, i.e., control moderate and high, and five nitrogen ratios, i.e., 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 or 0:100 NO3−-N:NH4+-N ratio on their growth and functional value for fatty acids and antioxidants. Results show that the leaf fatty acid and antioxidant profiles of species, emphasize their good potential to become functional crop products, based on...

Lima,Breno L. de C.; Lacerda,Claudivan F. de; Ferreira Neto,Miguel; Ferreira,Jorge F. da S.; Bezerra,Antonio M. E.; Marques,Elton C..
ABSTRACT Salt-tolerant plants are important to cope with salinity and/or sodicity problems in semiarid regions. The dwarf coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.) has emerged as a salt-tolerant crop once established. However, little is known about the mechanisms that contribute to the survival of coconut seedlings under salinity stress. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of saline water on morpho-physiological and biochemical responses of dwarf coconut seedlings. Treatments were composed of five levels of water salinity, expressed by its electrical conductivity (ECw), as follows: 0.9 (control); 5.2; 10.1; 15.3 and 19.3 dS m-1 in a completely randomized design with four replications. The high levels of organic solutes (carbohydrates and soluble amino-N) and...

Isolation and partial purification of beta-galactosidases from cotyledons of two cowpea cultivars Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
ENÉAS-FILHO,JOAQUIM; BARBOSA,GISLAINY KARLA DA COSTA; SUDÉRIO,FABRÍCIO BONFIM; PRISCO,JOSÉ TARQUÍNIO; GOMES-FILHO,ENÉAS.
Three isoforms of beta-galactosidases were isolated and partially purified from the cotyledons of quiescent seeds of Vita 3 and Vita 5 cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] cultivars differing in water and salt stress tolerance. The purification procedure consisted of ammonium sulfate fractionation, acid precipitation, ion exchange chromatography through DEAE-sephadex and affinity chromatography through Lactosyl-sepharose columns. The three isoforms isolated from the two cultivars showed the same chromatographic patterns, same optimum of temperature for enzyme activity assay (60ºC), identical thermal stability up to 50°C, and similar pH optima (3-4). However, they differed from each other in sensitivity towards metal ions and certain chemical agents...

POTASSIUM NITRATE PRIMING TO MITIGATE THE SALT STRESS ON CUCUMBER SEEDLINGS Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Oliveira, Carlos Eduardo da Silva; Steiner, Fábio.
Salinity is one of the abiotic stresses that further limit the seed germination and growth of plants because of low water potential of the soil. In this study, seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L., cv. Aodai Melhorado) were used to investigate the effects of potassium nitrate priming on germination and early seedling growth under different salinity levels. It was hypothesized that priming with potassium nitrate may improve seed germination and plant establishment by mitigating the negative effects of saline stress through its role in cell osmotic balance. The seeds were soaked in distilled water or in a 2 g L–1 KNO3 solution at 25 °C for 6 hours, and after drying, were distributed in plastic boxes with blotter paper containing different salt solutions...

Most farmers in the Northeastern Thailand grow Khao Dawk Mali 105, a non-glutinous variety because of its premium cooking and eating quality and its aroma. However, KDML105 is susceptible to blast, brown planthopper and soil salinity. In order to maintain its yield stability, it is necessary to incorporate those above mentioned traits into KDML105 background. By using molecular markers to select for those plants carrying the target genes in each generation, it will help improving the selection efficiency in term of accuracy and time consumed. The experiment was conducted at Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center during 2007-2012 using the lines derived from the backcrossing program of KDML105; UBN03004 (IR77955-14-17*2/B.T) and UBN03007...
