Application of Moran Eigenvector Maps (MEM) to irregular sampling designs ArchiMer
Brind'Amour, Anik; Mahevas, Stephanie; Legendre, Pierre; Bellanger, Lise.
Moran’s eigenvectors maps (MEM) are attractive mathematical objects as they are fairly simple to calculate and can be used in most studies of spatially-explicit data. There is, however, an aspect of MEM analysis that still requires some investigation: the effect of irregular sampling on their modeling performance. This study investigates empirically the behavior of MEMs under different irregularity schemes. It is focusing on simulated scenarios representing sampling designs frequently encountered in ecology. We advocate that MEMs can be computed and correctly used with data coming from irregularly designed sampling surveys, given some precautions. We suggest that when the sampling sites are equally spaced but do not cover the entire study area, the MEMs...

Re-assessing the French small-scale coastal fisheries: from fleet activity to economic performance ArchiMer
Daures, Fabienne; Van Iseghem, Sylvie; Demaneche, Sebastien; Leblond, Emilie; Brigaudeau, Cecile; Guyader, Olivier; Berthou, Patrick.
While the majority of small-scale coastal fisheries are found in developing nations, a considerable number exist in developed nations as well. Indeed, small-scale fisheries are strongly represented in all European Union (EU) Member States, 81% and 87% of the EU 25 whole fleet is composed of vessels less than 12 and 15 meters long respectively. In 2000, European regulation established a fisheries data collection framework including economic information requirements in order to provide the scientific basis for the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy. This paper presents the methodology designed to collect the relevant economic data and characterize the status of the French fleets from an economic perspective. Based on stratified sampling plan...

Towards a universal sampling protocol for soil biotas in the humid tropics PAB
Bignell,David Edward.
This paper reviews the methods for the inventory of below-ground biotas in the humid tropics, to document the (hypothesized) loss of soil biodiversity associated with deforestation and agricultural intensification at forest margins. The biotas were grouped into eight categories, each of which corresponded to a major functional group considered important or essential to soil function. An accurate inventory of soil organisms can assist in ecosystem management and help sustain agricultural production. The advantages and disadvantages of transect-based and grid-based sampling methods are discussed, illustrated by published protocols ranging from the original "TSBF transect", through versions developed for the alternatives to Slash-and-Burn Project (ASB) to the...
