Can Sarcophagidae (Diptera) be the most important entomological evidence at a death scene? Microcerella halli as a forensic indicator Rev. Bras. entomol.
Vairo,Karine Pinto; Caneparo,Maria Fernanda da Cruz; Corrêa,Rodrigo César; Preti,Daniel; Moura,Mauricio Osvaldo.
Abstract Although a corpse can harbor several species of flies, only a few have been sufficiently studied to be used as forensic indicators. Sarcophagidae are an example of how the forensic use of insects can be impaired by taxonomic and biological data limitation. This manuscript provides the first record of the Neotropical flesh fly Microcerella halli (Engel, 1931) on a human body and its use in forensics. M. halli and Sarconesia chlorogaster (Widemann, 1830) were sampled from a body located indoors at 20 °C. Only M. halli was used to estimate the mPMI (minimum post mortem interval) because it was the oldest larval stage on the corpse. Based on the development time of M. halli we estimate an mPMI of at least 10 days. In addition, we provide for the first...

Análise de sobrevivência e estimativa de entropia para Sarconesia chlorogaster (Wiedemann) (Diptera, Calliphoridae) Zoologia
Moura,Maurício O.; Bonatto,Sionei R..
The life expectancy of Sarconesia chlorogaster (Wiedemann, 1830) reared in artificial diet and controlled temperatures chamber set at 27±1oC, 70±10% RH and 12 hours of photophase was analysed using entropy (H). Entropy (H) was used to quantify the distribuition of deaths between ages and then quantify the impact of mortality on life expectancy. The entropy values obtained for males (H=0,245) and females (H=0,299) were intermediary between the theoretical values of H=0,5 and H=0 suggesting a tendency toward rectangular distribuitions in both sexes. The effect of mortality across ali ages on expectation of life was different at each age. For males the highest values were found between days 10 and 20 and between days 15 and 25 for females. This íindings imply...

Ciclo de vida de Sarconesia chlorogaster (Wiedemann) (Diptera, Calliphoridae, Toxotarsinae), criada sob condições de laboratório em dieta artificial Zoologia
Bonatto,Sionei Ricardo.
Bionomic characteristics of Sarconesia chloroüaster (Wiedemann, 1830) were obtained, rearing it with an artificial diet and a conlrolled temperature chamber set at 27±lºC, 70± 10% RH and 12 hours photophase. The duration of the wholeevolutive cycle ofS. cholorogaster was about 19.61 days. The incubation period was the shortest (14.30 hours), the pupal one (pre-pupal and pupal together) was the longest (9.57 days), followed by the larval period that had about 9.44 days. A life table for immature stages was done in order to obtain a survival curve. The average of the adults longevity was about 25.28 days. There is no statistical difference between the duration of male and female longevity. The duration of the periods of pre-posture and posture were almost...

Análise morfológica das formas imaturas de Sarconesia chlorogaster (Wiedemann) (Diptera, Calliphoridae, Toxotarsinae) Zoologia
Bonatto,Sionei Ricardo; Carvalho,Cláudio José Barros de.
Morphological characteristics of the immature of Sarconesia chlorogaster (Wiedemann, 1830) were obtained rearing it on an artificial diet in a temperature controlled chamber set at 27±1ºC, 70±10% RH and 12 hours photophase. The egg, three larval instars and puparium were described and illustrated together with the lairval cephalopharyngeal skeleton. Some characters were studied, for the first time using the scanning electron microscopy.
