Small pelagic fish (SPF) species are heavily exploited in eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS) as their transformation products are increasingly used in the world food chain. Management relies on regular monitoring, but there is a lack of robust theories for the emergence of the populations’ traits and their evolution in highly variable environments. This work aims to address existing knowledge gaps by combining physical and biogeochemical modelling with an individual life-cycle based model applied to round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) off northwest Africa, a key species for regional food security. Our approach focused on the processes responsible for seasonal migrations, spatio-temporal size-structure, and interannual biomass fluctuations....

This study investigated variations of landings of two key species, Sardinella aurita and Sardinella maderensis, in Senegalese waters over a ten-year period (2004-2013). Using generalized additive models, it was found that fishing gear played a major role in explaining differences in monthly landings for both species (51-71% deviance explained). Its effect was more significant in the southern part of Senegal. Fishing effort (number of trips) accounted only for 4-18% of variability in landings. Purse seine (PS) fishing was the most important contributor to the landings of both species. In addition, in the southern area, surrounding gillnet fishing was also important for S. maderensis. Modeling results showed that the relationship between monthly effort and...

We investigate Sardinella aurita and Sardinella maderensis recruitment success relative to the variability of oceanographic conditions in Senegalese waters using generalized additive models (GAM). Results show that recruitment of both species is marked by a strong intra-annual (seasonal) variation with minimum and maximum in winter and summer, respectively. Their interannual variations are synchronous until 2006 (recruitment decreasing), while from 2007 there is no synchrony. The model developed shows that sardinella recruitment variability is closely related to the tested environmental variables in the study area. However, the key environmental variables influencing the recruitment success are different for both species: the Coastal Upwelling Index and...

The potential impact of marine protected areas on the Senegalese sardinella fishery ArchiMer
Ba, Aliou; Chaboud, Christian; Schmidt, Joern; Diouf, Malick; Fall, Massal; Deme, Moustapha; Brehmer, Patrice.
In the early 2000s, Senegal set up several Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) along its coastal zone with the purpose of biodiversity conservation and to support sustainable management of fisheries. However, the impact of MPAs may vary according to the type of fisheries. In Senegal, the sardinella fishery accounts for 70% of total catches. This fishery is of crucial importance for national food security and employment. Given this importance, it is necessary to evaluate the impact of MPAs, often being considered as a tool for fisheries management. An analytical, dynamic and spatial bio-economic model of sardinella fishery, considering fish and fisher migration, has been developed and scenarios over forty years have been analyzed. The results show that the...

Do Sardinella aurita spawning seasons match local retention patterns in the Senegalese-Mauritanian upwelling region? ArchiMer
Mbaye, Baye Cheikh; Brochier, Timothee; Echevin, Vincent; Lazar, Alban; Levy, Marina; Mason, Evan; Gaye, Amadou Thierno; Machu, Eric.
Sardinella aurita is the most abundant small pelagic fish in the Senegalese-Mauritanian region. The success of its reproduction crucially depends on the local circulation as this determines whether larvae reach coastal nursery areas favorable to their survival or are dispersed into the open ocean. As a first step towards evaluating sardinella vulnerability to climate-driven hydrodynamical changes, this study aims at underpinning how transport pathways drive optimal spatial and seasonal patterns for sardinella reproduction. We have used two estimates of the Senegalese-Mauritanian coastal seasonal circulation simulated by two hydrodynamical model configurations that differ in their forcing and topography. Nursery areas are determined by evaluating coastal...

Effect of environmental conditions on the seasonal and inter-annual variability of small pelagic fish abundance off North-West Africa: The case of both Senegalese sardinella ArchiMer
Thiaw, Modou; Auger, Pierre-amael; Ngom, Fambaye; Brochier, Timothee; Faye, Saliou; Diankha, Ousmane; Brehmer, Patrice.
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of environmental variations on the abundance of Sardinella aurita and Sardinella maderensis in Senegalese waters in the upwelling system. Monthly data indicating the abundance of sardinella were first estimated from commercial statistics, using Generalized Linear Model from 1966 to 2011. Abundance indices (AIs) were then compared with environmental indices, at the local scale, a Coastal Upwelling Index (CUI) and a coastal Sea Surface Temperature (SST) index, and on a large scale, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and the Multivariate El Nino Southern Oscillation Index (MEI), using correlations and times series analyses. The results showed that the abundance...

Etude de quelques aspects de la reproduction chez La sardinelle ronde Sardinella aurita (valenciennes, 1847) Pechee le long des cotes mauritaniennes OceanDocs
M´Bodj, O.B.; Wague, A..

Nine decades of Spanish sardine Sardinella aurita exploitation in Venezuela, a critical revision Boletín de Investigaciones
Gómez Gaspar,Alfredo.
ABSTRACT The Spanish sardine Sardinella aurita, is the most important fishing resource in Venezuela, on Margarita Island it began its fishing and canning. This review estimates catch over nine decades and causes of fishing continuity. In 90 years, 4,386,758 tons were caught, a modest volume due to poor statistics. Three management ordinances have been enacted the first appeared after 40 years of activity in canning plants. The sardine industry has four periods, the first between 1927 and 1973 without fishing regulation and another three (1974-2005; 2006-2013 and 2014-2017) when the ordinances are applied. In each one the catch, annual average, operating gears, the capture per unit of effort and relevant investigations are considerate. The current...

Interannual variation of larval fish assemblages in the Gulf of Cádiz (SW Iberian Peninsula) in relation to summer oceanographic conditions BABT
Mafalda Júnior,Paulo; Rubín,Juan Perez de.
Two ichthyoplankton surveys were conducted during July 1994 and July 1995 in the Gulf of Cádiz with the aim of describing composition, abundance, distribution patterns and interannual variations of larval fish assemblages. Interannual differences were found in this study. In 1994, higher salinities were observed at external sites, though in 1995, higher values were observed at intermediate sites. The upper water column was warmer in 1994 and had less fish larvae density. During 1994, Sardinella aurita and Engraulis encrasicolus were abundant but spatial location was opposite. In 1995, abundance of both species was very different, but with similar spatial pattern. Cluster analysis revealed well-defined groups of stations and assemblages of larvae, primarily...
