Feeding strategy of Downs herring larvae (Clupea harengus L.) in the English Channel and North Sea ArchiMer
Denis, Jeremy; Vallet, Carole; Courcot, Lucie; Lefebvre, Valerie; Caboche, Josselin; Antajan, Elvire; Marchal, Paul; Loots, Christophe.
This study aims to characterize the larval feeding strategy of the Downs sub-population of North Sea herring (Clupea harengus L.). Diet composition, vacuity rate and prey selectivity of larvae from 8 to 15 mm collected during the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS) - MIK sampling from 2008 to 2013 were assessed by direct observation of their gut contents using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The high contribution of protists and small zooplanktonic prey observed in the gut contents proved the relevance of SEM to study the diet of first feeding larvae. The relatively low vacuity rate of 45% suggests that food may not be a limiting factor for Downs herring larvae in winter. These larvae appeared to be omnivorous and there was a clear shift in term...

Toxicological and ultrastructural analysis of the impact of pesticides used in temperate fruit crops on two populations of Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Moura,Alexandre Pinho de; Carvalho,Geraldo Andrade; Cosme,Luciano Veiga; Alves,Eduardo; Botton,Marcos; Silva,Patrícia Sobral.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of (g a.i. L-1) abamectin (0.02), carbaryl (1.73), sulphur (4.8), fenitrothion (0.75), methidathion (0.4), and trichlorfon (1.5) on the survival of larvae and pupae, on the oviposition of adults and hatching of eggs from treated Chrysoperla externa third-instar larvae from two different populations (Bento Gonçalves and Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil). Morphological changes caused by abamectin to eggs laid by C. externa from Vacaria population were evaluated by mean of ultrastructural analysis. The pesticides were applied on glass plates. Distilled water was used as control. For the evaluation of larvae mortality, a fully randomized experimental design in a 2 x 7 (two populations x seven treatments)...

Biofilm production by clinical Staphylococci strains from canine otitis BJM
Moreira,Camila Alencar; Oliveira,Lis Christina de; Mendes,Marina Silveira; Santiago,Thiago de Melo; Barros,Eduardo Bedê; Carvalho,Cibele Barreto Mano de.
This study determined the species of 54 staphylococci isolates from canine otitis and their ability to produce biofilm through the Congo red agar method, confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The most frequently identified species were S. intermedius and S. simulans. Results showed that 30% of the strains were biofilm producers.
