SINGLE-PASS SEA/ICE DISCRIMINATION USING ERS-2 SCATTEROMETER DATA Gayana
Neyt,Xavier; Pettiaux,Pauline; Manise,Nicolas; Acheroy,Marc.
This paper presents a new method to perform sea/ice discrimination in single-pass ERS-2 scatterometer data. Existing methods are 1rst reviewed and compared in a consistent framework. Next, the ice probability according to the individual existing methods is learned through the use of a neural network. Finally, the individual criteria are combined together in order to increase the sea-ice discrimination accuracy. The proposed method is shown to provide an acceptable performance even on single-pass data, i.e., without requiring temporal averaging

Impact des fines échelles spatio-temporelles de l'atmosphère sur le couplage entre océan hauturier et plateau continental dans un système d'upwelling de bord est ArchiMer
Desbiolles, Fabien.
This study focuses on the oceanic response to fine atmospheric spatial and temporal scales, and especially fine wind patterns in the Benguela and Canary upwelling systems. These regions are under the influence of local or regional wind, blowing parallel to the coast. The wind is the main driver of the cold-water upwelling and is modulated by several physical processes at various scales. The nature of the interactions with the atmosphere, the ocean and the adjacent continent differs according to these processes. For the past 20 years, outstanding efforts have been made in the description and understanding of the atmospheric conditions at the sea surface. An increasing number of space missions and major technical improvements have allowed refinement of the...

Enhanced Arctic Sea Ice Drift Estimation Merging Radiometer and Scatterometer Data ArchiMer
Ardhuin, Fanny; Ezraty, Robert.
Satellites enable daily and global coverage of the polar oceans and provide a unique monitoring capability of sea ice dynamics. Sea ice drift maps can be estimated in Arctic from several satellite sensors, particularly from scatterometers and radiometers. This study presents the benefits of combining single drift fields at the same resolution into a "merged" field, built at three-and six-day lags during winters with a 62.5-km resolution. It is shown that combining these drift fields not only increases the reliability of the displacement estimation and the number of estimated vectors to almost a full ice covered area but also expands the time period over which these estimations are reliable from freeze until the melt onset. The autumn-winter-spring sea ice...

Response of the Southern Benguela upwelling system to fine-scale modifications of the coastal wind ArchiMer
Desbiolles, Fabien; Blanke, Bruno; Bentamy, Abderrahim; Roy, C..
We analyze the results of a regional model of the Southern Benguela upwelling system forced by wind stress fields derived from QuikSCAT observations. Two different horizontal resolutions are considered for the wind stress: QS25 and QS50, corresponding to native 25 and 50 km grids, respectively. The differences between both products highlight the primary importance of fine-scale momentum fluxes for both the structure and intensity of the wind- and wind curl-driven upwelling. Using QS25, we show that the coastal Ekman transport is reduced, leading to a warmer SST and a reduced oceanic coastal jet. QS25 finer wind stress curl patterns also favor the development of a stronger and shallower poleward undercurrent. The addition of a coastal wind correction to...

Comparison of the Sentinel-1B Synthetic Aperture Radar With Airborne Microwave Sensors in an Extra-Tropical Cyclone ArchiMer
Sapp, Joseph W.; Mouche, Alexis; Jelenak, Zorana; Chang, Paul S.; Frasier, Stephen J..
In Winter 2017, the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (IWRAP) was flown on a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) WP-3D Hurricane Hunter aircraft under the direction of scientists from Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) at NOAA/National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) over the North Atlantic ocean out of Shannon, Ireland. IWRAP is a dual-frequency, conically scanning, profiling Doppler radar initially developed by Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MIRSL) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst that is routinely installed on the NOAA WP-3D research aircraft. The flight on February 6, 2017, targeted a region of high winds (greater than 30...
