Application of a Genus-Specific LAMP Assay for Schistosome Species to Detect Schistosoma haematobium x Schistosoma bovis Hybrids ArchiMer
Crego-vicente, Beatriz; Fernández-soto, Pedro; Febrer-sendra, Begoña; García-bernalt Diego, Juan; Boissier, Jérôme; Angora, Etienne K.; Oleaga, Ana; Muro, Antonio.
Schistosomiasis is a disease of great medical and veterinary importance in tropical and subtropical regions caused by different species of parasitic flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. The emergence of natural hybrids of schistosomes indicate the risk of possible infection to humans and their zoonotic potential, specifically for Schistosoma haematobium and S. bovis. Hybrid schistosomes have the potential to replace existing species, generate new resistances, pathologies and extending host ranges. Hybrids may also confuse the serological, molecular and parasitological diagnosis. Currently, LAMP technology based on detection of nucleic acids is used for detection of many agents, including schistosomes. Here, we evaluate our previously developed...

High prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium x Schistosoma bovis hybrids in schoolchildren in Cote d'Ivoire ArchiMer
Angora, Etienne K.; Allienne, Jean-francois; Rey, Olivier; Menan, Herve; Toure, Andre O.; Coulibaly, Jean T.; Raso, Giovanna; Yavo, William; N'Goran, Eliezer K.; Utzinger, Jurg; Balmer, Oliver; Boissier, Jerome.
Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease, though it is highly prevalent in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. While Schistosoma haematobium-bovis hybrids have been reported in West Africa, no data about Schistosoma hybrids in humans are available from Cote d'Ivoire. This study aimed to identify and quantify S. haematobium-bovis hybrids among schoolchildren in four localities of Cote d'Ivoire. Urine samples were collected and examined by filtration to detect Schistosoma eggs. Eggs were hatched and 503 miracidia were individually collected and stored on Whatman(R) FTA cards for molecular analysis. Individual miracidia were molecularly characterized by analysis of mitochondrial cox1 and nuclear internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS 2) DNA regions. A...

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Schistosomiasis among Schoolchildren in two Settings of Côte d’Ivoire ArchiMer
Angora, Etienne K.; Boissier, Jérôme; Menan, Hervé; Rey, Olivier; Tuo, Karim; Touré, Andre O.; Coulibaly, Jean T.; Méité, Aboulaye; Raso, Giovanna; N’goran, Eliézer K.; Utzinger, Jürg; Balmer, Oliver.
Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease affecting more than 250 million people, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. In Côte d’Ivoire both Schistosoma haematobium (causing urogenital schistosomiasis) and Schistosoma mansoni (causing intestinal schistosomiasis) co-exist. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of S. haematobium and S. mansoni and to identify risk factors among schoolchildren in the western and southern parts of Côte d’Ivoire. From January to April 2018, a cross-sectional study was carried out including 1187 schoolchildren aged 5–14 years. Urine samples were examined by a filtration method to identify and count S. haematobium eggs, while stool samples were subjected to duplicate Kato-Katz thick smears to quantify eggs of S. mansoni and...

Persistent establishment of a tropical disease in Europe: the preadaptation of schistosomes to overwinter ArchiMer
Mulero, Stephen; Rey, Olivier; Arancibia, Nathalie; Mas-coma, Santiago; Boissier, Jerome.
BackgroundGlobal changes promote the spread of infectious diseases worldwide. In this context, tropical urogenital schistosomiasis is now permanently established in Corsica since its first emergence in 2013. The local persistence of the tropical pathogens (schistosomes) responsible for urogenital schistosomiasis at such latitudes might be explained by (i) the presence of its intermediate host, the snail Bulinus truncatus, (ii) the recurrent local reseeding of schistosomes by their vertebrate hosts (either human or animal) every summer, and/or (iii) the maintenance and survival of schistosomes within their snail hosts over winter.MethodsIn this study we conducted an ecological experiment to assess the ability of temperate and tropical schistosome strains to...

Schistosomiasis haematobia in Brazilian patients: clinical and renal functional evaluation with 99mTc-DTPA J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
D’Almeida,J.; Maliska,C.; Pellegrini,P. M.; Penas,M. E.; Collares,R. A.; Cruz,M. G. A..
The present study was carried out at the Army Central Hospital, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from September 2000 to December 2001, employing diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid labeled with technetium-99m (99mTc-DTPA) to evaluate the renal function of nineteen symptomatic patients infected with S. haematobium during a peace mission in Mozambique. Results evidenced that the most frequent clinical manifestations were hematuria (68.4%) and low back pain (68.4%) and 73.7% patients had altered dynamic renal scintigraphy expressed by an increase in the excretory phase independently of the symptoms duration; furthermore, none of them had mechanical obstructive pattern. Schistosoma haematobium glomerulopathy could be considered a pathological finding without...
