Turbot juveniles were exposed to four ammonia concentrations [0.17 (L), 0.34 (M), 0.73 (MH) and 0.88 (H) mgl(-1) NH3-N] for different exposure durations (28 days minimum to 84 days). Their physiological status and growth performances were compared to a control group [0.004 (C) mgl(-1) NH3-N]. No growth was observed in the H group, and by day 57, mass increase in the MH group was only 15% of that in group C. During the first month growth in the L group was similar to that in control group while it was lower (33%) in the M group; afterwards the L and M groups had a similar growth (half that of controls). This paper presents some features of turbot sperm and compares them with data reported in the literature on other freshwater and marine fish. In captivity, turbot spermiation period lasts 6 months. When compared to other fish species, turbot males are characterized by low values of maximum gonadosomatic index (0.6-0.8%) and are poor sperm producers in terms of volume (0.2-2.2 ml), concentration (0.7-11.0 x 10(9) spermatozoa/ml) and total sperm number released per stripping (0.2-12.0 x 10(9) spermatozoa). Compared to most freshwater species, the duration of cell movement is long (1-17 min). The spermatozoon of turbot can be considered to be of a primitive type. Ionic (Na+, K+, Cl-, PO43-, pH), total CO2, total calcium and protein concentrations in the plasma and endolymph of the inner ear were compared in trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and turbot Scophthalmus maximus. The aerobic bacterial flora in the gut of turbot larvae and their influence on larval survival was examined. Two turbot experiments were run with six replicates each time. Large variation, from 0% up to 44%, was observed in the survival percentage of turbot larvae. There was no correlation between the number of bacteria present in the gut of turbot larvae and the larval survival rate. The possible benefits of feeding a formulated diet, together with <i>Artemia</i> , to first-feeding turbot larvae were investigated. Five dietary regimes were used: control ( <i>Artemia</i> only), cofeeding with a diet rich in phospholipid (PL) from bovine brain, cofeeding with a diet rich in free fatty acids (FFA) from the same source, cofeeding with a commercial diet (Lansy A2), and a formulated feed only (PL-rich diet).
