Statistics about the occurrence frequency of earthquakes (1973-2015) at shallow, intermediate and great depths along the Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) Arc is presented and a percent perturbation relative to P-wave mean value (LLNL-G3Dv3) is adopted to show the deep structure. The correlation coefficient between the subduction rate and the frequency of shallow seismic events along the IBM is 0.605, proving that the subduction rate is an important factor for shallow seismic events. The relationship between relief amplitudes of the seafloor and earthquake occurrences implies that some seamount chains riding on the Pacific seafloor may have an effect on intermediate-depth seismic events along the IBM. Macquarie Ridge is one of the southernmost seamount ridges, spanning 1600 kilometres from the southern tip of New Zealand to the Australia-Pacific-Antarctic triple junction halfway to Antarctica. Squat lobsters, superfamilies Chirostyloidea and Galatheoidea, are highly diverse at low and mid-latitudes, declining rapidly towards the poles; only 15 of the more than 1000 species have been recorded south of 50 degrees S. Prior to the present study, one species of squat lobster (Munidopsis pyrochela, Munidopsidae) was known from the Macquarie Ridge, but recent research voyages in 2003 and 2008 collected a further five species from both superfamilies and three families. Seventy seamounts 50 to 100 km off South East Cape, southern Tasmania, rise from depths of 1000- 2000 m on the Australian continental slope. Sampling of the slopes of 14 seamounts was undertaken in 1997 by the Australian Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The collection yielded 14 species of hydroids, six of which are new, including two species of a new genus. Only Halecium fragile Hodgson, 1950, and Tripoma arboreum Hirohito, 1995, have previously been recorded from Tasmania. Other species are known from deep water off New Zealand, Japan and the south-western Atlantic. |
