Fossil woods from the Oligocene of southwestern Patagonia (Río Leona Formation): Rosaceae and Nothofagaceae Ameghiniana
Pujana,Roberto R.
Systematic studies of angiosperm fossil woods from sediments of the Río Leona Formation were continued. A new morphospecies of Maloidoxylon with affinity to Rosaceae was described and constitutes, together with the fossil pollen from the same strata, the oldest South American fossil with this familial affinity. Nothofagaceae fossil woods are represented by the morphospecies Nothofagoxylon scalariforme Gothan, Nothofagoxylon kraeuseli Boureau et Salard, Nothofagoxylon triseriatum Torres et Lemoigne, Nothofagoxylon ruei Salard and a new morphospecies of Nothofagoxylon. Three of the four subgenera of Nothofagus were recognized in the fossil woods and a new infrageneric affinity for Nothofagoxylon ruei was proposed. The described woods have affinity to extant...

Fossil woods from the Oligocene of southwestern Patagonia (Río Leona Formation): Atherospermataceae, Myrtaceae, Leguminosae and Anacardiaceae Ameghiniana
Pujana,Roberto R.
Fossil woods from Oligocene Río Leona Formation were studied and described. A new morphospecies of Myrceugenellites with affinity to Myrtaceae was described and a new morphogenus, similar to Schinus (Anacardiaceae), was erected and documents the first fossil wood with this affinity from Patagonia. The diagnosis of Laurelites doroteaensis with affinity to Atherospermataceae and Doroteoxylon vicente-perezii with affinity to Leguminosae were amended. All the described woods resemble the wood of extant species that today inhabit Patagonia with the exception of D. vicente-perezii - the generic affinity of which remains uncertain.

Comparative wood anatomy of vegetative organs (stem and rhizome) of Sophora linearifolia (Sophoreae, Papilionoideae, Leguminosae) Boletín de la Sociedad
Pujana,Roberto R; Burrieza,Hernán P; Silva,Mariana P; Tourn,Graciela M; Castro,María A.
Wood anatomy of stem and rhizome of Sophora linearifolia, a rhizomatous plant endemic to centre Argentina, is described. Structural description of thin sections and macerations includes microphotographs of optical and scanning electron microscopy. Significant anatomical differences exist between secondary xylem of aerial orthotropic shoots and underground rhizome. Both organs have absent to indistinct growth ring boundaries, simple perforation plates, alternate and vestured intervessel pits and disjunctive parenchyma cell walls. However, stems have smaller vessels, longer fibres, partial storying (vessel elements and axial parenchyma) and narrower rays. Some anatomical characters of the rhizome suggest adaptations to its sinuous pattern of growth. The stem...

Wood anatomy of Ribes magellanicum (Grossulariaceae) Boletín de la Sociedad
Pujana,Roberto R.; Burrieza,Hernón P.; Castro,María A..
Wood anatomy description of Ribes magellanicum Poir. is given including specimens of its two subspecies. This is the first detailed secondary xylem study of a species included in the South and Central American subgenus Parilla Jancz. Wood anatomy of R. magellanicum shows the following typical anatomical features cited for northern hemisphere Ribes L.: small vessels, rays of two distinct sizes and scalariform perforation plates.
