Aspects of the morpho-anatomy of developing fruits and seeds of Clusia parviflora are presented and discussed as a continuation of the study of these organs in Clusiaceae. The fruit is a septifrage capsule; the suberized exocarp is derived from the external epidermis of the ovary. The mesocarp originates from the ovarian mesophyll and remains parenchymal in nature. The endocarp is derived from the internal epidermis of the ovary and the endocarp is derived from the inner ovary epidermis as well as from three to four adjacent subepidermal layers, with tangentially elongated cells which become lignified and contribute to fruit dehiscence. The ovules are anatropous, bitegmic, with an endothelium, and give rise to equally anatropous seeds. The exotesta has... |

Seed germination of fig seeds is important for obtain seedlings with high variability in breeding studies, and for producing mosaic virus-free seedlings. This experiment was carried out to evaluated the effects of several treatments (priming with water for 24h, GA3 at 500 and 1000 ppm for 24h, 3% KNO3 for 24h, and stratification at 4°C for 7, 14 and 21 days) on seed germination and emergence of ‘Bursa Siyahı’ and ‘Sarılop’ fig cultivars. The application of GA3 increased the germination and emergence of these fig seeds. The highest percentages of germination and emergence were obtained with GA3 at 500 or 1000 ppm for both cultivars. The seed germination and emergence of the cultivar ‘Bursa Siyahı’ were higher than observed with the ‘Sarılop’. The... |

Escobedia grandiflora (L.f.) Kuntze is a wild hemiparasitic plant with orange roots. Little is known about the development of initial parasitism with the host, despite the significant value of roots for Central and South American communities. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize post-seminal structure and development of E. grandiflora in Pennisetum purpureum host. To analyze the structure and development of E. grandiflora, seedlings, stems and roots samples were processed and examined under light, confocal and scanning electron microscopy. Escobedia grandiflora seeds are composed of seed coat, perisperm, and embryo. Emergence of the radicle began eleven days after imbibition. Seedlings showed a root hair collar encircling the axis at the... |

Potato is one of the most important agricultural products that has great nutritional and industrial value. Potato seed tubers are usually used for growing this crop, but separating the seed tubers from the edible ones is tedious, time consuming and costly process. Therefore, a rotating potato sorting machine was designed, developed and evaluated in this research. This machine was able to sort potato tubers according to their size. Effects of sieves slope angle and rotational speed on the tubers mechanical damage, sorting accuracy and capacity of designed machine were evaluated. The test was conducted in the factorial experiment format with three replications based on a completely randomized experimental design. Three levels of sieves slope angle (5, 10 and... |

Handling systems in seed processing factories inflict impressive damages on seed corn. It was reported 24% of damages on seed corns related to elevators. In current research, the operation of a Z- Shape elevator was studied and compared to conventional bucket elevator which employed in two seed drying stations of Seed and Plant Improvement Institute in Karaj city and Shahi plant in Moghan plain, Iran. The effect of elevator operation on seed cracking and breakage was determined by t- test. According to the results, applying Z- Shape elevator decreased the physical seed damages up to 78% and reduced the chance of seed cracking between 4 to 8% in comparison with conventional elevators. Economically results illustrated spending the cost equal to 10% of the... |

The knowledge of mechanical properties under applied forces is very important to engineers during the design and handling of agricultural products. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of moisture content and loading orientation on some strength properties of snake gourd (Trichosanthes cucumerina. L) seed. The strength properties measured are compressive extension at yield, compressive strain at yield, compressive load at yield, compressive load at break and energy at yield. These properties were evaluated at five moisture levels (6.3, 8.6, 12, 14, and 17% dry basis) under the three loading orientations (length, width and thickness). The results show that loading orientation has great effect on the compressive properties of the seed. At all... |

ABSTRACT Diacrodon is a monotypic genus of the tribe Spermacoceae (Rubiaceae), endemic to northeastern Brazil. Diacrodon compressus is frequently misidentified with a two lobed calyx species of Borreria, B. verticillata. Traditionally, in Spermacoceae the fruit type was considered a diagnostic character among the genera. In this sense, D. compressus presents a strongly compressed, one seeded and indehiscent fruit (vs. globose, two seeded and dehiscent fruit in B. verticillata). In this work, we address two objectives: evaluate the systematic position and determine the identity of Diacrodon in respect to other taxa. Molecular analyses using ITS and ETS indicate that D. compressus is strongly related to other species of Borreria. The morphological results... |

The weevil subfamily Scolytinae includes beetles which may feed on the bark, trunk or roots of both live and dead trees and are sometimes considered forest and silvicultural pests. Less frequently, some species feed on seeds and may be cause economic losses when associated to plant cultivars. Spermophthorus apuleiae Costa-Lima is a Neotropical Scolytinae formerly recorded to be "associated" with seeds of Caesalpinia ferrea var. leiostachya Benth, a Brazilian tree popularly known in Portuguese as "pau-ferro". Hitherto, it was not clear whether these beetles actually feed on the seeds of that plant. In order to investigate the ability of S. apuleiae to feed on seeds of "pau-ferro", observations were done and colonies of these beetles were established. Both... |

Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong. is a Mimosaceae tropical tree species recommended for heterogeneous reforestation of degraded tropical areas. "Timburi" seeds present low germination due to the high degree of seed dormancy. Different methods to overcome seed dormancy was compared: sanding, sanding followed by 24 hours water (25ºC) soaking, imbibition in boiling water followed by exposure to water at room temperature (28ºC), and concentrated sulfuric acid (5, 15, 30, 60, 120 or 180 minutes) followed by washing with tap water. All seeds were germinated in rolled towels at 25ºC and 12 hours photoperiod. Total germination, first count of germination test and germination velocity index were recorded. Mechanical scarification (sanding), chemical... |
