The effects of ethylene on the HCl-extractability of trace elements during soybean seed germination Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Liu,Chunming; Zhao,Yixin; Liu,Jianfeng; Gen,Wanting; Cheng,Yunqing.
Background Ethylene is capable of promoting seed germination in some plant species. Mobilization of metals such as Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn in mature seeds takes place when seeds are germinating. However, whether ethylene is involved in the regulation of soybean seed germination and metal element mobilization during early seed germination stage remains unknown. In the present study, seeds were treated with ethylene synthesis inhibitor aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), and double distilled H2O (ddH(2)0) treatment was used as control. Ethylene emission, ACC synthase (ACS) expression, ACS enzyme activity and Ca, Zn, Mn, Cu and Fe content in hypocotyls were qualified to analyze the relationship between...

COMPETITIVE EFFECTS OF THE ALIEN INVASIVE CENTAUREA SOLSTITIALISL. ON TWO CHILEAN BACCHARIS SPECIES AT DIFFERENT LIFE-CYCLE STAGES Gayana Botánica
Gómez-González,Susana; Cavieres,Lohengrin A; Torres,Patricio; Torres-Díaz,Cristian.
Several studies have revealed a variety of mechanisms of invasion of alien plant species. However, little is known on how those mechanisms and their associated effects on native species change across different life-cycle stages. Under controlled conditions, we assessed the interactions between the alien invasive species Centaurea solstitialis L. (Asteraceae) and two pioneer native species to the Chilean matorral; Baccharis linearis (Ruiz et Pav.) Pers. and B. paniculata DC. (Asteraceae). Competitive effects of the invader on natives were evaluated by combining different life-cycle stages: seed-seed, plant-seed, and plant-plant. Seed germination of C. solstitialis was explosive and much faster than that of the native species. The presence of C. solstitialis...

Negative photoblastism in the invasive specie Eschscholzia californica Cham. (Papaveraceae): Patterns of altitudinal variation in native and invasive range Gayana Botánica
Castillo,María L.C; Bustamante,Ramiro O; Peña-Gómez,Francisco T; Gutiérrez,Víctor L; Reyes,Claudio A; Arredondo-Núñez,Alicia; Marey,Marilyn.
Negative photoblastism is defined as the inhibitory effect of light on seed germination. This effect can be modulated by abiotic variables, such as temperature, light condition and water potential. This conditions change notoriously at higher altitudes, could promote differentiations in the photoblastic response among populations. Also, this physiological attribute poses an interesting conflict for plant regeneration, because prevents seed germination on the soil surface, however, it can also to reduce the mortality of seeds germinants in unsuitable conditions and consequently, seedling mortality. Eschscholzia californica is one of the few species with negative photoblastism and it is invasive in Chile, growing primarily in open and disturbed places. Some...

Inheritance of rice cold tolerance at the germination stage Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cruz,Renata Pereira da; Milach,Sandra Cristina Kothe; Federizzi,Luiz Carlos.
Cold tolerance during germination is important for ensuring fast and uniform establishment of a rice crop early in the season. However, evaluation of this trait under field conditions is limited by environmental variation, which makes it difficult to identify genetically superior lines. Evaluation of cold tolerance under controlled temperature conditions may be performed by assessing percentage of reduction in coleoptile length and coleoptile growth. Our study determined the inheritance and heritability of cold tolerance at the germination stage in crosses between six rice genotypes. Diallel analysis showed that while both additive and non-additive gene action were involved, the non-additive action was relatively more important for percentage of reduction...

The effect of different combinations of chemical scarification, soaking and substrates (ex vitro and in vitro) on seed germination ofPolaskia chichipe (Goss.) Backeberg and Echinocactus platyacanthus Link & Otto fa. grandis (Rose) Bravo-Hollis, collected in the Tehuacan Valley, Mexico, were studied. The P chichipe seeds did not require either chemical scarification or soaking, whereas E platyacanthus required chemical scarification with strong acids. Growth and maintenance of the seedlings was evaluated in two different concentrations of Murashige-Skoog medium (50% and 100% of their components). It was found that MS 50% stimulated germination in both species and promoted seedling growth.

Seed dormancy release and germination characteristics of Corispermum lehmannianum Bunge, an endemic species in the Gurbantunggut desert of China Phyton
Zhang,LW; Liu,HL; Zhang,DY; Bian,WG.
Seed dormancy release and germination of Corispermum lehmannianum Bunge were tested using various treatments: temperature, cold stratification, gibberelins (GA3), dry storage and sand burial. Results showed that temperature and light did not affect the germination of fresh seeds, cold stratification and GA3 could improve seed germination, whereas dry storage and sand burial did not. The germination percentage was highest at 35/20 °C after the cold stratification and GA3 treatments. Corispermum lehmannianum seeds were classified as non-deep, Type-2, physiological dormancy (PD), whose seed dormancy could be released by cold stratification and GA3.

Exploring Herbicidal Potential of Aqueous Extracts of Some Herbaceous Plants Against Parthenium Weed Planta Daninha
SAFDAR,M.E.; TANVEER,A.; KHALIQ,A.; ALI,H.H.; BURGOS,N.R..
To assess the phytotoxic potential of Achyranthes aspera, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Datura metel and Rumex dentatus against Parthenium hysterophorus, 5% (w/v on dry weight basis) aqueous extracts from root, stem, leaf, flower and whole plant were tested through a Petri plate-based germination and pot-cultured seedling bioassays. Achyranthes aspera and A. philoxeroides inhibited parthenium weed germination more than extracts from other species. Whole plant, leaf and fruit extracts of A. aspera reduced the germination percentage (5%); leaf extract from A. philoxeroides caused lower germination index (0.4), higher mean germination time (14 d) and longer time to 50% germination (13.5 d) of parthenium weed. In the foliar spray bioassay, A. aspera reduced...

Weed emergence in autumn under temperate conditions Planta Daninha
Calado,J.M.G.; Basch,G.; Carvalho,M..
The emergence of weed plants depends on environmental conditions, especially temperature and soil moisture. The latter is extremely important in Mediterranean environments which are characterized by irregular amount and distribution of rain throughout the year, which influences the beginning of the growth cycle of the annual species (seed germination). This paper studies the influence of rainfall, in particular accumulated rainfall in autumn, on the emergence of weed plants. The experiment was carried out on Luvisols, and the appearance of flora under field conditions was observed. Through analysis of the results, it can be concluded that a high percentage of weed plants (> 85% related to the highest registered value) was obtained with more than 90 mm...

Seed germination and seedling emergence of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) and Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) Planta Daninha
Sadeghloo,A.; Asghari,J.; Ghaderi-Far,F..
Abutilon theophrasti and Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) are major weeds that affect cropping systems worldwide. Laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted to determine the effects of temperature, pH, water and salinity stress, and planting depth on seed germination and seedling emergence of Velvetleaf and Barnyardgrass. For Velvetleaf, the base, optimum and ceiling germination temperatures were estimated as 5, 35 and 48 ºC, respectively. Seed germination was sensitive to drought stress and completely inhibited by a potential of -0.6 MPa, but it was tolerant to salinity. Salinity stress up to 45 mM had no effect on the germination of Velvetleaf, but germination decreased with increasing salt concentration. Drought and salinity levels for 50%...

Thermal-biological aspects on the seed germination of Cucumis anguria L.: influence of the seed coat Rev. Bras. Bot.
SANTOS,DÉBORA LEONARDO DOS; CARDOSO,VICTOR JOSÉ MENDES.
The seed coat influences the early stages of germination of many seeds and sometimes maintains seed dormancy. Early reports have shown that the testa influences the germination response of Cucumis anguria seeds to light although the response to temperature as influenced by the tegument is not well understood. The main purpose of this study was to observe the influence of the testa on the germination of Cucumis anguria by using parameters as germinability and isothermal germination rate. The assays were carried out in a thermal-gradient block with water imbibed seeds kept in darkness. Estimates of the activation enthalpies (deltaH) show |deltaH| < 50 kJ.mol-1 between 26.1 °C and 35.2 °C (intact seeds) and between 25.4 °C and 35.2 °C (scarified seeds),...

Hybridization among wild passionflower species Rev. Bras. Bot.
Conceição,Léo Duc Haa Carson Schwartzhaupt da; Souza,Margarete Magalhães; Belo,Gabriela de Oliveira; Santos,Sheila Félix dos; Freitas,Jôsie Cloviane Oliveira de.
(Hybridization among wild passionflower species). Passion fruits are appreciated for their ornamental value, since their flowers are showy and display a wide variety of colors. In addition, many hybrids have been produced and used in other countries. The genotypes used in selection of plants with ornamental characteristics are hybrid progenies which are used in various crossing strategies. Thus, the aim of this work was to obtain interspecific hybrids, perform backcrossing and obtain progenies from crossings between hybrids, and to determine the reproductive compatibility between the progenitors involved. The percentage of fertilized flowers, germination, and the number of fruits, seeds and plants obtained through crossing were recorded. A series of 374...

Lectins from Pisum arvense seeds behave differently from storage proteins during germination in the darkness Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
SILVA,LUIZA IZABEL M. MOREIRA DA; RAMOS,MÁRCIO VIANA; CAJAZEIRAS,JOÃO BATISTA; FERREIRA,PATRÍCIA RODRIGUES; CARVALHO,CARLOS ALBERTO V.; GRANGEIRO,THALLES BARBOSA; NUNES,EDSON PAULA; SAMPAIO,ALEXANDRE HOLANDA; FREITAS,BEATRIZ TUPINAMBÁ; SILVEIRA,JOAQUIM ALBENÍSIO G. DA; CAVADA,BENILDO SOUSA.
ABSTRACT - The mobilization of seed proteins from Pisum arvense L. during germination in the absence of light was studied. The seeds were found to be completely consumed 22 days after germination and seedlings ceased growth after the 18th day. SDS-PAGE indicated that the main protein bands correspond to high molecular mass storage proteins which undergo proteolysis in the initial stages of germination and are not detected after the 7th day of germination. However, the corresponding lectin profiles were detected during the entire germination process, suggesting that these proteins are strongly resistant to seed proteolytic enzymes and should be important for seedling establishment. Furthermore, haemagglutinating activity in cotyledons was detected until 22...
