Estimation of phylogenetic relationships of Phlomis species based on seed protein polymorphism Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Yüzbasioglu,Ertugrul; Dadandi,Mehmet Yasar; Özcan,Servet.
In this study, phylogenetic relationships among 39 Phlomis taxa were investigated based on seed protein profiles produced by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). A total of 21 polypeptide bands were scored, of which, 19 were polymorphic among the taxa of the genus Phlomis. A distance matrix was generated from the similarity matrix which was computed by using Jaccard’s similarity coefficients, based on polymorphic bands and then an UPGMA tree was established through cluster analysis performed on the distance matrix. Genetic distances ranged from 0.00 to 0.50 within subsection Dendrophlomis; from 0.00 to 0.625 within subsection Gymnophlomis and from 0.00 to 0.769 within subsection Oxyphlomis. The UPGMA tree formed...

Seeds of species from the ‘caatinga’: proteins, oils and fatty acid contents Rev. Bras. Bot.
MAYWORM,MARCO AURÉLIO S.; NASCIMENTO,ANDRÉA SERRA DO; SALATINO,ANTONIO.
The seeds of 14 species from the ‘caatinga’, a dry forest ecosystem of the semiarid region of northeast Brazil, were analysed for total protein and total lipid contents, as well as fatty acid distribution. The seeds of Argemone mexicana L., an introduced and naturalized species in Brazil, commonly found in ‘caatingas’ and other vegetation, were also analysed. The protein contents ranged from 123 g.kg-1 to 551 g.kg-1, higher contents being found in species of Leguminosae, but also in Jatropha mollissima (Pohl) Baill. (Euphorbiaceae, 409 g.kg-1). Oil contents ranged from 10 g.kg-1 to 400 g.kg-1. The contents of protein and oil were found to be inversely proportional in the seeds of most species, the figures for proteins being generally higher than those of...

Taxonomic relationships in some Vicia species from Egypt, based on seed morphology and SDS-PAGE of seed proteins - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.19345 Biological Sciences
Abdel Khalik, Kadry Nabeh; Sohag University, Faculty of Science; Al Gohary, Iman Hussien.
The seed morphology and seed proteins of 11 Vicia taxa from Egypt were studied. Macro- and micro-morphological characters, including seed shape, color, size, hilum shape and seed sculpture were described and analyzed. The secondary sculpture of the cell wall varies from papillose in nearly all Vicia species to lophate in V. hirsuta. Further, the seed proteins of studied taxa were investigated by SDS-PAGE and 39 different bands were scored. The similarity analysis based on the SDS-PAGE profile and seed morphology was found to be a useful characteristic for the discrimination of Vicia species both on the subgeneric and the sectional levels. The present study did not acknowledge V. tetrasperma and V. hirsuta as subgenus Ervum. As a result, division of Vicia...

Isolation and Characterisation of a Reserve Protein from the Seeds of Cereus jamacaru (Cactaceae) BABT
Costa,Itayguara Ribeiro da; Souza,Petrônio Augusto Simão de; Bloch Jr.,Carlos; Llamoca-Zárate,Romulo Marino; Campos,Francisco A. P..
We describe here the isolation and characterisation of a major reserve protein from the seeds of Cereus jamacaru. (Cactaceae). This protein has a molecular mass of 5319 kDa and was isolated by a combination of gel filtration chromatography and reverse phase HPLC. The amino acid composition of the protein was determined and it was shown to have similarities with the amino acid composition of several proteins from the 2S albumin storage protein family. The usefulness of this protein as a molecular marker in the Cactaceae is also discussed.

Isolation and characterization of a reserve protein from the seeds of Opuntia ficus-indica (Cactaceae) BJMBR
Uchoa,A.F.; Souza,P.A.S.; Zarate,R.M.L.; Gomes-Filho,E.; Campos,F.A.P..
We describe here the isolation and characterization of a major albumin from the seeds of Opuntia ficus-indica (Cactaceae). This protein has a molecular mass of 6.5 kDa and was isolated by a combination of gel filtration chromatography and reverse-phase HPLC. The amino acid composition of this protein was determined and it was shown to have similarities with the amino acid composition of several proteins from the 2S albumin storage protein family. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of this protein is Asp-Pro-Tyr-Trp-Glu-Gln-Arg.
