Seed rain in and between vegetation patches in arid Patagonia, Argentina Phyton
Bonvissuto,GL; Busso,CA.
Seed rain has ecological consequences on plant community structure. This study was conducted in the Monte Austral Neuquino nearby the town of Picún Leufú, Province of Neuquén, Argentina, within an area of 15 km x 15 km (39º 20 32' S; 69º19 30' W). Studies were conducted at two sites, distant 1.5 km from one another. Vegetation is distributed on the soil surface as vegetation patches. Four superficial locations may be found in the soil of these patches: location 1, small dune accumulated under the lee; location 2, found at the edge of the small dune, and below the major grass canopies and tallest shrubs; location 3, located at the edge of the vegetation patch, and location 4 which includes the uncovered corridors among vegetation patches. Seed rain was...

Reproductive biology and early establishment of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii in Brazilian sandy coastal plain vegetation: implications for biological invasion Scientia Agricola
Bechara,Fernando Campanhã; Reis,Ademir; Bourscheid,Kurt; Vieira,Neide Koehntopp; Trentin,Bruna Elisa.
Pinus is the most invasive woody taxon, exceeded only by herbaceous plants. This study reports the reproductive biology and early establishment of Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii, describing its invasive properties in a protected natural area of the Brazilian coastal sandy plains. We evaluated the seed germination and rain, longevity of seed viability and the initial dynamics of the seedlings of Pinus elliottii var elliottii through field and laboratory experiments. We recorded a continuous seed rain of about 204.0 viable seeds m- 2 per year, with a 90 % germination rate. The seeds exhibited a low longevity of viability in the soil and a dense, permanent seedling bank that may explain the high levels of pine invasion. The environmental impact caused...

Isolated trees with high crown coverage and densities increase pasture seed rain Acta Botanica
Vergne,Driélli Carvalho; Almeida,Hisaias Souza; Campos,Caroline Cambraia Furtado; Martins,Natália. S.; Ramos,Flavio Nunes.
ABSTRACT Pasture and crop lands restrict seed dispersal near remnant forest fragments, especially by restricting the movements of dispersal agents and limiting propagule dispersal. Some factors can improve seed dispersal in open areas, such as the presence of high numbers of isolated trees in close proximity to forest fragments. We sought to determine if: (i) the structural characteristics and (ii) densities of isolated trees in pasture lands, and (iii) their distances from the forest fragments, influence seed dispersal. We installed 18 seed traps in each of six pastures (total=108 traps) bordering forest fragments distributed over 6 distance classes from the forest edges (0, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 m). We determined the characteristics of the plants...

Spatial variability of the competitive effect of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) on Lolium rigidum L. Agrociencia
Izquierdo,Jordi; Fernández-Quintanilla,César.
Lolium rigidum is a major grass weed of winter cereals in the Mediterranean area, in spite of the continuous use of herbicides in these crops. New management approaches focus on the reduction of the seed banks by enhancing crop competitiveness and, consequently, minimizing weed seed rain. However, the spatial heterogeneity that exists within fields results in differences in the growth and the competitiveness of crops and weeds. In order to determine if the competitive interactions between barley and L. rigidum are site-specific biomass and seed production of this weed, growing in monoculture (plots with L. rigidum) and in mixed culture (plots with L. rigidum+barley), were studied at three sites (in upland, mid-slope and lowland positions) within barley...
