Occurrence of antibodies to Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii in dairy cattle from the northern region of the Paraná State, Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Ogawa,L.; Freire,R.L.; Vidotto,O.; Gondim,L.F.P.; Navarro,I.T..
Three-hundred and eighty-five serum samples were taken from dairy cows on 90 farms in 12 counties from the northern region of the Paraná State, Brazil. The samples were analyzed by IFAT for the detection of anti-Neospora caninum and anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibodies. Forty-five (12%) samples were seropositive to N. caninum, while 102 (26%) samples were seropositive to T. gondii. Only four animals were seropositive to both coccidia. No significant difference was observed between the N. caninum serology and any of the variables studied, such as dairy cattle management, milk production, reproductive problems, feeding, and presence of dogs, cats and rodents. These data suggest that neosporosis is present among dairy cattle in the studied geographic region...

Gestational toxoplasmosis in Paraná State, Brazil: prevalence of IgG antibodies and associated risk factors BJID
Lopes-Mori,Fabiana Maria Ruiz; Mitsuka-Breganó,Regina; Bittencourt,Laura Helena França de Barros; Dias,Renata Cristina Ferreira; Gonçalves,Daniela Dib; Capobiango,Jaqueline Dario; Reiche,Edna Maria Vissoci; Morimoto,Helena Kaminami; Freire,Roberta Lemos; Navarro,Italmar Teodorico.
The aim of the present study was to verify the association between seropositivity for IgG anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies and social, economic and environmental variables of pregnant women attending the public health centers of Paraná, Brazil. From January 2007 to July 2010, 2226 pregnant women were interviewed and detection of anti-T. gondii specific IgG and IgM antibodies was performed by chemiluminescence test. Seropositivity for anti-T. gondii IgG was observed in 1151 (51.7%) pregnant women, 29 of which (1.3%) presented IgM reagent with IgG of high avidity. The variables associated with the presence of IgG were residency in the rural area, more than one pregnancy, less than or equal to eight years schooling, low per capita income, age group, raw or...

Measles serodiagnosis: production and evaluation of the IgM-measles ELISA IAL reagent BJM
Hoshino-Shimizu,Sumie; Vaz-de-Lima,Lourdes Rehder de Andrade; Oliveira,Maria Isabel de; Pereira,Carlos Augusto; Moura,Anísio de; Mendonça,Ronaldo Zucatelli.
Recent measles outbreaks in different countries led to an increase of laboratory measles diagnosis. Thus, we developed the IgM-Measles ELISA IAL, using measles virus antigens obtained from cell cultured in microcarriers in order to supply reagent kits to Brazilian public health laboratories. A batch of antigenic reagent was produced and evaluated in the enzyme immunoassay in comparison with clinical diagnosis and with as reference assay (IgM Capture ELISA CDC) data. This study was performed in a positive panel with 70 serum samples from patients with measles, and a negative panel with 132 samples from patients with unrelated diseases and without recent measles or vaccination history. In relation to other diagnostic methods, the IgM ELISA IAL presented...

Enzootic bovine Leukosis: development of an indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (I-Elisa) in seroepidemiological studies Rev. Microbiol.
González,Ester Teresa; Bonzo,Estela Beatriz; Echeverría,María Gabriela; Licursi,María; Etcheverrigaray,María Elisa.
Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) is the etiologic agent of Enzootic Bovine Leukosis, a retrovirus exogenous to the bovine species. Once infected, there is no detectable viraemia but instead there is a strong and persistent immunological response to BLV structural proteins, essentially the gp51 envelope glycoprotein and the mayor core protein p24. We describe the test procedure of an indirect ELISA (I-ELISA) using polyclonal reagents for the detection of antibodies to BLV. For comparison, the sera were simultaneously tested by agar gel immunodiffussion (AGID) test, which is currently used as diagnostic standard for BLV infection. The antigen applied does not require a high degree of purification and the data from the analysis of the negative sera showed that the...
