Phenotypic and Genotypic Antibiotic Resistance of Salmonella from Chicken Carcasses Marketed at Ibague, Colombia Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Vélez,D Cortes; Rodríguez,V; García,N Verjan.
ABSTRACT Salmonella enterica is responsible for alimentary toxic infections associated with the consumption of contaminated poultry products and the antimicrobial resistant patterns of Salmonella circulating in the Tolima region are currently unknown. To address this issue, both the phenotype and genotype antibiotic resistance patterns of 47 Salmonella isolated from raw chicken carcasses sold at the Ibague city were analyzed by the disc diffusion, microdilution and PCR assays. All 47 Salmonella isolates showed resistance to five or more antimicrobial agents. Resistance to Ampicillin (AMP), Amikacin (AMK), Gentamicin (GEN), Tobramycin (TOB), Cefazoline (CFZ), Cefoxitin (FOX), Nitrofurantoin (NIT), Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (SXT), Tetracycline (TET),...

Serovars of Salmonella spp isolated from broiler chickens and commercial breeders in diverse regions in Brazil from July 1997 to December 2004 Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Kanashiro,AMI; Stoppa,GFZ; Cardoso,ALSP; Tessari,ENC; Castro,AGM.
Avian salmonellosis is a worldwide problem to the poultry industry, from the point of view of animal health and public health as well. The aim of the present study was to survey the most common Salmonella serovars in commercial breeders or broiler flocks from several regions in Brazil. The results of the present study indicated a high incidence of S enterica subspecies enterica serovar Enteritidis in breeders (57.5%) and broilers flocks (84.0%). The importance of these findings lies in the fact that S. Enteritidis has become the most frequent serovar responsible for foodborne outbreaks and sporadic cases of salmonellosis in humans.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Molecular Characterization of Salmonella Enterica Serotypes Isolated from Poultry Sources in Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Borges,KA; Furian,TQ; Souza,SN; Salle,CTP; Moraes,HLS; Nascimento,VP.
ABSTRACT Salmonella spp. remain among the most important agents of foodborne diseases worldwide. The importance of Salmonella spp. in public health is linked to their wide range of antimicrobial resistance and to their pathogenicity and virulence in both human and animal hosts. The aim of this study was to determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns for Salmonella serotypes isolated from poultry sources in Brazil and to detect virulence-associated genes and verify their association with specific serotypes. A total of 163 strains of Salmonella enterica isolated from poultry sources in Southern Brazil were selected, and each belonged to one of 11 different serotypes. They were tested against ten antibiotics and examined for the presence of 26...

Salmonella serovars isolated from poultry material from 1994 to 1999 MV&Z
Andreatti Filho, Raphael Lúcio; Fernandes, Sueli Aparecida; Boretti, Lígia Pedroso; Barros, Mércia Rodrigues; Del Bem, Sandro Roberto; Fontana, Adriano; Sampaio, Homero Marcos; Savano, Edson Naoto.
Salmonella serovars isolated from poultry material from different geographical areas were identified in the 1994-1999 period. A total of73 serovars was isolated, with recognition of21 different serovars distributed in nine serogroups. Enteritidis was the serovar with highest incidence, 46.57%, and was isolated from feed, litter and meat, poultry byproducts and fish meal. Natum had the second highest incidence, 6.84%, and 80% of isolations were made from meat meal. S. pullorum represented 2.73% of the isolations, 100% from brown layers, confirming their susceptibility to infection by this serovar. Of the materials included in the present study, broilers and meat meal had more Salmonella spp., 41.09% and 30.13%, respectively. Among the serovars isolated from...

Seroprevalence and risk factors of antibodies against Leptospira spp. in ovines from Uberlândia municipality, Minas Gerais state, Brazil BJM
Salaberry,Sandra R.S.; Castro,Vanessa; Nassar,Alessandra F.C.; Castro,Jacqueline R.; Guimarães,Ednaldo C.; Lima-Ribeiro,Anna M.C..
The objectives of the present study were to verify the seroprevalence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies, identify the most frequent serovars and the risk factors associated with the infection in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil . A total of 334 ovines blood samples were collected in 12 farms from Uberlândia municipality to be evaluated by means the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) against 22 serovars of Leptospira spp. and an epidemiologic questionnaire was applied for each farm in order to correlate with risk factors of leptospirosis: sex, age and breed as well as contact with cattle, contact with dogs and presence of rodents. The prevalence of seropositive to MAT was found in seventy four ovines (22.2%; CI 95% 17.6-26.4%), with titers ranging from...

Biocide tolerance in Salmonella from meats in Southern Spain BJM
Garrido,Antonio Marin; Burgos,Mª Jose Grande; Márquez,Mª Luisa Fernández; Aguayo,Mª Carmen López; Pulido,Rubén Pérez; Árbol,Julia Toledo del; Gálvez,Antonio; López,Rosario Lucas.
Salmonella serovars sampled from meat products in Southern Spain (Andalucía) during the period 2002-2007 were analyzed in this study. The serovars most frequently detected (in order) were Typhimurium, Enteritidis, Derby, Anatum and Rissen. Isolates (n = 43) were tested for sensitivity to biocides, including the quaternary ammonium compounds benzalkonium chloride (BC), cetrimide (CT) and hexadecylpyridinium chloride (HDP), and the bisphenols triclosan (TC) and hexachlorophene (CF). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the quaternary ammonium compounds was in the range of 25 to 50 mg/L for most isolates, although a few isolates required much higher concentrations, up to 250 mg/L. Bisphenols showed higher inhibitory activity, with a MIC of 2.5 to 25...
