Is total serum protein a good indicator for welfare in reared sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)? ArchiMer
Coeurdacier, Jean-luc; Dutto, Gilbert; Gasset, Eric; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Reared sea bass were submitted to six stressful situations: hyperoxia with or without hypercapnia, increased stocking density in an open flow or recirculating system, transfer to another tank and nodavirus injection. The potentially negative impact of these factors on the lives of sea bass was investigated by measuring 9 water parameters and 19 fish parameters including total serum protein (TSP). TSP has already been used to evaluate stress. The present study investigates data of previous and new experiments, concentrating on the potential use of TSP as a routine indicator to assess welfare in sea bass reared on fish farms. In the current experiment, oxygen and carbon dioxide were seen to affect levels of TSP, but alterations were too erratic to enable...

SERUM BIOCHEMICAL DETERMINATIONS OF PROPOLIS-TREATED RATS J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
SFORCIN,J.M.; FUNARI,S.R.C.; NOVELLI,E.L.B..
Ethanolic extracts of the bee glue, a resinous substance collected by honeybees called propolis, have been widely used in folk medicine since ancient times. Antibacterial, antifungal and thus antiseptic properties may represent the basis for the historical and present use of these extracts in dermatology, against inflammatory conditions and common colds. This work was carried out in order to verify possible biochemical alterations in some seric parameters of propolis-treated rats. It was shown that propolis possesses an antioxidant property and its administration did not affect either amylase and alanine transaminase activities or total protein concentration.

Seasonal effect of Brazilian propolis on seric biochemical variables J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
SFORCIN,J. M.; NOVELLI,E. L. B.; FUNARI,S. R. C..
Propolis has been the subject of recent scientific investigation due to its biological properties, such as antibiotic, antiinflammatory, anesthetic, healing, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and carcinostatic. The purpose of this study was to analyze the biochemical profile of propolis-treated rats to observe whether propolis might lead to side effects after administration. Evaluation of total protein, glucose, urea, creatinine, triglycerides, cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol concentrations and determination of aminotransferases (AST and ALT) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) in propolis-treated rat serum were performed. The seasonal effect on propolis activity was also analyzed, considering the biochemical variables evaluated. The lack of clinically important...

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in sera samples of mice experimentally infected J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Langoni,H.; Das Dores,C. B.; Silva,R. C.; Pezerico,S. B.; Castro,A. P. B.; Da Silva,A. V..
Detection of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) DNA in blood can help to diagnose the disease in its acute phase; however, it must be considered that hemoglobin, present in blood, can inhibit polymerase activity, making impracticable the detection of DNA in samples. Mice were experimentally infected via oral route with ME49 and BTU2 strains cysts and RH strain tachyzoites; polymerase chain reaction was used to detect T. gondii DNA in mice sera 18, 24, 48, 96, and 192 hours post infection (PI). Toxoplama gondii DNA was detected in only one animal infected with BTU2 strain, genotype III (isolated from a dog with neurological signs) 18 hours PI. The agent's DNA was not detected in any sample of the other experimental groups. New studies must be carried out to...

Profile of Serum Metabolites and Proteins of Broiler Breeders in Rearing Age Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Rezende,MS; Mundim,AV; Fonseca,BB; Miranda,RL; Oliveira Jr,W; Lellis,CG.
ABSTRACT The excellence of modern broiler production is based on the genetic improvement of broiler strains for high growth rate and high egg production, associated with technological developments in nutrition, management, and health. Over the last decades, the clinical biochemistry of broilers has been studied to determine serum biochemical component values; however, there are still many knowledge gaps on factors that determine changes in these values. In this study, the serum lipid and protein profiles of 4-week-old male and female Cobb broiler breeders were evaluated. Blood samples were collected on a commercial farm located in the city of Uberlândia, MG, Brazil. The following parameters were evaluated: total protein, albumin, globulin, albumin to...

Li,Y.H.; Yang,Y.; Yan,Y.T.; Xu,L.W.; Ma,H.Y.; Shao,Y.X.; Cao,C.J.; Wu,X.; Qi,M.J.; Wu,Y.Y.; Chen,R.; Hong,Y.; Tan,X.H.; Yang,L..
Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is a prevalent occupational disorder that impairs auditory function in workers exposed to prolonged noise. However, serum microRNA expression in ONIHL subjects has not yet been studied. We aimed to compare the serum microRNA expression profiles in male workers of ONIHL subjects and controls. MicroRNA microarray analysis revealed that four serum microRNAs were differentially expressed between controls (n=3) and ONIHL subjects (n=3). Among these microRNAs, three were upregulated (hsa-miR-3162-5p, hsa-miR-4484, hsa-miR-1229-5p) and one was downregulated (hsa-miR-4652-3p) in the ONIHL group (fold change >1.5 and Pbon value <0.05). Real time quantitative PCR was conducted for validation of the microRNA...

Measurement of serum estrogen and estrogen metabolites in pre- and postmenopausal women with osteoarthritis using high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry BJMBR
Gao,W.L.; Wu,L.S.; Zi,J.H.; Wu,B.; Li,Y.Z.; Song,Y.C.; Cai,D.Z..
Although 17β-estradiol (E2) deficiency has been linked to the development of osteoarthritis (OA) in middle-aged women, there are few studies relating other estrogens and estrogen metabolites (EMs) to this condition. We developed a high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) method to measure the levels of six EMs (i.e., estrone, E2, estriol, 2-hydroxyestrone, 2-hydroxyestradiol, and 16a-hydroxyestrone) in healthy pre- and postmenopausal women and women with OA. This method had a precision ranging from 1.1 to 3.1% and a detection limit ranging from 10 to 15 pg. Compared to healthy women, serum-free E2 was lower in the luteal and postmenopausal phases in women with OA, and total serum E2 was lower...

Differences in prostate cancer detection between Canadian and Saudi populations BJMBR
Al-Abdin,O.Z.; Rabah,D.M.; Badr,G.; Kotb,A.; Aprikian,A..
Few studies have addressed racial differences in prostate cancer (PCa) detection between Western and Arabian countries, although PCa has a significantly lower prevalence in Arabic populations compared to Western populations. Therefore, an explanation of this difference is lacking. Serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a valuable marker used to select patients who should undergo prostate biopsies, although the manner in which it is used may require adjustments based on the ethnic population in question. We investigated racial differences in the PCa detection rate between Canadian and Saudi populations. A retrospective analysis was performed of data collected prospectively over 5 consecutive years in urology clinics at the McGill University Health Center...

Variables on the blood inorganic sulphate concentration in cattle Ciência Rural
Ortolani,Enrico Lippi; Barreto Júnior,Raimundo Alves; Sucupira,Maria Cláudia Araripe; Maruta,Celso Akio.
Fourteen healthy yearling Holstein steers were used to study the influence of the levels of hemolysis and serum storage at different temperatures (4º C, -10ºC and at room temperature) on serum inorganic sulphate concentrations. The correlation of inorganic sulphate concentration between plasma and serum was also compared. Three different levels of hemolysis were obtained by adding distilled water to the blood. Precision studies were undertaken to determine the viability of the turbidimetric technique used to measure the inorganic sulphate concentration. No difference in the inorganic sulphate concentration was found between serum and plasma (p>0.91), between serum kept at different temperatures (p>0.87) and between hemolysed and normal serum...
