The use of organic wastes in agricultural soils is one of the possible ways to employ these materials. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of organic wastes and Fermented Bokashi Compost (FBC), to establish the most efficient use of organic wastes for a soil, changing the net nitrogen mineralization and soil chemical properties. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 6 x 2 x 5 factorial, being five organic wastes plus an control (soil without waste), with or without FBC, evaluated at 0, 7, 42, 70 and 91 days of incubation, with three replicates, under laboratory conditions. The organic wastes enhanced the soil chemical properties and increased nitrogen concentration in soil. However, the net nitrogen mineralization was... |

In this work, investigations were carried out with five treatments [control, three doses of lime stabilized sludge (60, 120, 240 Mg ha-1 dry base) and soil corrective plus mineral fertilizer] to evaluate the immediate recuperation of a borrowed area. The application of stabilized alkaline sewage sludge acted as an acidity corrective, allowed the increase in the organic matter contents (21 to 43.5g dm-3) and available P (44 to 156 mg dm-3). Even with the use of the highest dose, no increase in the concentration of 32 analyzed metals was observed, due to the low concentration of metals in the sludge. The experiment showed that short term restoration of degraded area was possible by using high rates of sewage sludge without metal contamination. |

ABSTRACT Sewage sludge is a solid waste composed of water, rich in organic matter and nutrients, but concentrator of pathogenic microorganisms. Its use as agricultural fertilizer in the state of Paraná, Brazil is common. However, it is necessary to eliminate or significantly reduce microorganisms by means of a hygiene process. This can be obtained thermally, requiring a source of energy for heat generation. In this sense, a pilot system was constructed consisting of a stainless steel radiant floor, capable of transferring heat to the sewage sludge from coils coupled in base, through which the heated water circulates. The energy comes from solar radiation and is complemented by biogas from the anaerobic sewage treatment. Aiming to investigate the system's... |

Lead (Pb) behavior was studied in soil treated twice with sewage sludge contaminated with lead at interval of 18 months. Soil samples received five different treatments: three with lead [0 (reference); 2,500; 5,000 mug g-1] and two with a mixture of lead and cadmium (interferer) (2,500 + 2,500 and 5,000 + 5,000 mug g-1, respectively). Vases containing treated soil were cultivated with maize in a greenhouse for 75 days. Pb was extracted using nitric perchloric digestion and analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The soil, containing sewage sludge contaminated by lead presented a higher concentration of Pb. The metal concentration remained constant in all treatments at 20-60 cm depth. No absorption of Pb by the plants was detected. |

The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of biosolid composts (BC) and carbonized rice hull (RH) on the production of Coffea arabica L. cv Catuaí Vermelho seedlings (IAC H 2077-2-5-99) grown in tubets. A totally randomized experimental design with five treatments and four replications was conducted in a nursery, to evaluate Co, Ni, Cr, Pb, Cu, Mn and Zn contents in roots, stems and leaves. Higher contents of Cr, Co, Ni, Pb, Cu and Zn were found in roots, while leaves carried the highest content of Mn. Zn in leaves went from average to high in plants developed in BC. In plants developed in RH. Mn content was about four times higher than the adequate concentration. Ni, Co, Cr, Pb and Cu contents found in leaves were considered normal, according... |

Vermicomposting is at suitable methods for stabilization and converting of sewage sludge into useful products. To investigate the effects of bulking material on vermicompost quality, an experiment was conducted in a factorial design with three replications. In this experiment, the final dried sludge in lagoons was mixed with bulking materials (woodchips, three leaves, and wheat straw) in four mixing proportion with swage sludge (0, 15, 30 and 45%, V/V). Chemical properties of bulking materials, sewage sludge, and produced vermicomposts were determined. Vermicomposts had relatively low pH and electrical conductivity (EC). The nutrients content of vermicompost, especially N, P, Fe, and Zn, were high. These properties showed its suitable quality for use in... |

ABSTRACT: With the increase of the population density in the cities, a great amount of residual waters passed to be generated. The usual practical ones of disposal of the sewage sludge, as the "sanitary and controlled embankment" or the "oustings the opened sky", are alternative of cost to each day more raised or have potential to produce impacts ambient undesirable, beyond constituting, frequently, in focus of problems of public health, through contamination of superficial and underground waters, and of the proliferation of animals and insects vectors of illnesses. Processes come being perfected to get a sewage sludge with biological, physical and chemical characteristics desirable for its use in agricultural areas, as biosolid. Data on the effect of its... |
