Reproductive biology of pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) (Teleostei: Characidae) in the Cuiabá River Basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Costa,Rosa Maria Rodrigues da; Mateus,Lúcia Aparecida de Fátima.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the reproductive strategy and life-history traits involved in the reproductive processes of P. mesopotamicus in two regions of the Cuiabá River basin, the first of these encompassing its headwaters (Cuiabazinho River - Rosário Oeste) and the other the flood area of the Cuiabá River (Porto Cercado - Poconé). A total of 391 individuals were sampled monthly from August 2006 to July 2007, 159 from the headwaters and 232 from the flood area. The size structure indicated that the females in the headwaters attain longer lengths than the males, while no differences in length were found in the flood area. Females predominated in the headwaters, while males outnumbered females in the flood area. The reproductive period in the...

Reproductive biology of Plagioscion magdalenae (Teleostei: Sciaenidae) (Steindachner, 1878) in the bay of Marajo, Amazon Estuary, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Santos,Nayara Barbosa; Rocha,Rossineide Martins da; Fredóu,Flávia Lucena.
Plagioscion magdalenae (pacora) is a commercially important benthopelagic sciaenid and widely distributed in the Amazon River basin. The present study describes the reproductive biology of this species in the bay of Marajo, Amazon Estuary, Brazil. The gonadal development stage, age and size at first sexual maturity (L50), sex ratio, and reproductive strategy were determined. The data were collected bi-monthly from December 2005 to October 2006. A total of 251 specimens were examined, with the total length (TL) ranging between 220 and 590 mm. The weight-length relationship for females, males and grouped sexes was highly significant, showing a positive allometry. The L50 was of 279 mm for grouped sexes, with 305 mm and 269 mm TL for females and males...

Population structure, condition factor and reproductive period of Astyanax paranae (Eigenmann, 1914) (Osteichthyes: Characidae) in a small and old Brazilian Reservoir BABT
Abelha,Milza Celi Fedatto; Goulart,Erivelto.
The population structure, condition and reproductive period of Astyanax paranae adult individuals inhabiting a small reservoir were investigated. The fishes were quarterly captured from the riverine and lacustrine zones of the Alagados Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil, during 1996/1997 and 1998/1999. The sex ratio differed from 1:1 with the predominance of the females in all standard length classes and total population sample. The females showed higher condition than the males. Both the sexes presented lower mean condition values in April and higher mean condition values in July. The estimated values of the regression coefficient indicated isometric growth for the females and males. The gonadosomatic relationship reached a maximum value of 14.80% for the females...
