Comments on "Shallow gas off the Rhone prodelta, Gulf of Lions" by Garcia-Garcia et al. (2006) Marine Geology 234 (215-231) - Reply ArchiMer
Garcia Garcia, A; Orange, D; Lorenson, T; Radakovitch, O; Tesi, T; Miserocchi, S; Berne, Serge; Friend, P; Nittrouer, C; Normand, Alain.
We really appreciate the interest and comments regarding our manuscript. We hope we address all the lingering issues in this reply. This also gives us the opportunity of publishing an update on our dataset that will complete the original manuscript (see Table 1). We have followed the author pattern in our answers: I-Gas sampling procedure, 2-Reported gas concentrations results, 3-General remarks, 4-Conclusions. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Gas occurrence and shallow conduit systems in the Western Sea of Marmara: a review and new acoustic evidence ArchiMer
Saritas, Hakan; Cifci, Gunay; Geli, Louis; Thomas, Yannick; Marsset, Bruno; Henry, Pierre; Grall, Celine; Rochat, Alexis.
Based on 3D and 2D high-resolution multichannel seismic reflection data in the Western High-Sea of Marmara, this study reviews shallow gas occurrence and related structures and classifies gas conduit systems within the upper, few hundred meter-thick sediment layers below the seafloor. Acoustic anomalies including high amplitude-reverse polarity reflections (bright spots), low amplitude transparent zones, chaotic or discontinuous reflections, pull-down effects, and plumes in the water column are interpreted in terms of natural gas occurrence and fluid flow structures (e.g., mud volcanoes, pockmarks). The gas occurrence is thought to be mostly of thermogenic origin. Mud volcanoes are one of the primary gas conduits forming craters on the seabed due to...

Shallow gas off the Rhone prodelta, Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Garcia Garcia, Ana; Orange, D; Lorenson, T; Radakovitch, O; Tesi, T.; Miserocchi, S; Berne, Serge; Friend, P.l.; Nittrouer, C; Normand, Alain.
Sediment cores acquired in 2004 off the Rhone prodelta show consistent anomalous methane concentrations of up to 87,440 ppm. Methane compositional and isotopic data support a biogenic origin, although there are a few sites that show strongly depleted delta C-13 values (-53%o PDB) suggesting a mixed source for the gas (biogenic and thermogenic). Anomalous methane concentrations (samples with more than 90 ppm) are discussed and integrated with organic carbon data, sedimentary rates and ADCP profiles. Highest gas concentrations were found directly off the river mouth (20-40 m water depth) and where the IFREMER models point to the thickest accumulation (> 2 m) in response to the Rhone flood event. In areas unaffected by the high flux of organic matter and...

Shallow gas accumulation in sediments of the Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Weschenfelder,Jair; Corrêa,Iran C.S.; Aliotta,Salvador; Pereira,Carla M.; Vasconcelos,Vinicius E.B. de.
A high resolution seismic survey was conducted in the Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil, aboard of the research vessel LARUS of the Fundação Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG). Around 400 km of 3.5 kHz seismic profiles were collected, which provided acoustic signals of good penetration depth and resolution. Seismic anomalies, including turbidity and pocket gas, revealed that gas-charged sediments are common in several areas of the lagoon. The gas accumulations in the Patos Lagoon are controlled by the spatial distribution of the sedimentary facies. Either in 'curtains' or in 'acoustic turbid zones', the main gas accumulations occur in areas with paleotopographic lows related to fluvial channels and valleys developed in the Rio Grande do Sul coastal...
