Invasion and establishment of Ceratium furcoides (Dinophyceae) in an urban lake in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil Acta Botanica
Silva,Luiza Nicoleite da; Medeiros,Caroline Modena de; Cavalcante,Kaoli Pereira; Cardoso,Luciana de Souza.
ABSTRACT Ceratium furcoides has received attention due its invasive behavior in South America and consequent alterations in local phytoplankton communities. Pedalinhos Lake had been dominated by chlorophytes until 2015, when the first occurrence of this dinoflagellate was detected. In order to investigate the colonization process of this species, we monitored the meteorological variables and phytoplankton abundance of this urban lake on a weekly basis from September 2015 to September 2018. At the beginning of the invasion process (Year 1), a peak density of 10,170 ind.mL-1 was recorded, with a significant decrease to 23 ind.mL-1, indicating an initial, unstable process of adaptation, with notable oscillation and reduction of cyanobacterial blooms. At this...

Species richness of the genera Trachelomonas and Strombomonas (pigmented Euglenophyceae) in a subtropical urban lake in the Porto Alegre Botanical Garden, RS, Brazil Acta Botanica
Alves-da-Silva,Sandra Maria; Cabreira,Josemari da Cruz; Voos,José Guilherme; Lobo,Eduardo Alcayaga.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the taxonomic composition and richness of the genera Trachelomonas and Strombomonas (pigmented Euglenophyceae) in a subtropical urban lake (30º03'05"S; 51º10'34"W) within the Botanical Garden, in the city of Porto Alegre, located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in order to contribute to the floristic knowledge of Euglenophyta in artificial urban lakes. From July 2007 to June 2008, we collected samples monthly from two sampling stations, using a 25-µm mesh plankton net. The samples were preserved in 4% formaldehyde. We evaluated the following environmental variables related to the water in the lake: ammonia content, silica content, organic matter content, dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature, pH,...

First record of the endemic phytophilous cladoceran Celsinotum candango Sinev & Elmoor-Loureiro, 2010, in Minas Gerais state, in a threatened shallow lake at Serra do Gandarela Biota Neotropica
Moreira,Francisco Wagner; Dias,Emerson Silva; Sant'Anna,Eneida Maria Eskinazi.
This study describes the occurrence of the phytophilous cladoceran Celsinotum candango, which has been considered, up to now, an endemic species of the Brazilian Cerrado, with only two previous records in the wetlands of Brasilia, Federal District. The cladoceran has now been registered at Coutos Lake (“Lagoa dos Coutos”), an altitudinal, temporary shallow lake, located in ironstone outcrops at Serra do Gandarela, Minas Gerais state. This mountain ridge was recently turned into an integral protection conservation unit, the Gandarela National Park. However, many shallow lakes, including this one, were excluded from the delimited area of the park, and are now at risk of disappearing due to expansion of mining activities. The information provided here reveals...

Diatom assemblage in a tropical lake of northeastern Brazil BABT
Nascimento,Lilian Rodrigues do; Sifeddine,Abdelfettah; Torgan,Lezilda Carvalho; Albuquerque,Ana Luiza Spadano.
The composition and spatial variation of diatom assemblage in surface sediments of Caçó Lake (shallow, mesotrophic and weakly acid lake - Maranhão State, Brazil) were analyzed in order to know the distribution pattern of the species along the lake during rainy season (April 1999). Four zones were established in the lake based on 21 diatoms species and habitat affinities. The first three zones (prime three meters deep to six meters deep) were marked by the occurrence of Pinnularia gigas, Frustulia rhomboides, Encyonopsis krasskei, Eunotia camelus, E. femoriformis and E. monodon. Zone IV (seven to nine meters deep) was inhabited mainly by Surirella biseriata and Fragilariforma floridana. During the beginning of the rainy season, the diatom assemblage in Caçó...

The influence of hydrodynamics on the spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton pigments in a large, sub-tropical coastal lake (Brazil) BABT
Cardoso,Luciana de Souza; Marques,David da Motta.
This study evaluated the spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton pigments in Itapeva Lake and its relationship with hydrodynamic aspects. Regarding spatial distribution, a decreasing N®S gradient was generally observed for the pigments, except in summer. This inversion observed during the summer was influenced by the predominant fetch (N-E). The horizontal heterogeneity was proved (ANOVA) for all seasons of the year, except spring. Spatially in spring, the vertical variance was much more significant (p<0.05) than the horizontal one. The sampling shifts presented a permanent degree of variability among the seasons of the year, showing the existence of a diurnal cycle in the concentration of chlorophyll a. This behavior was related to the...

Invertebrate composition in submerged macrophyte debris: habitat and degradation time effects Ecología austral
Faria Albertoni,Edélti; Ubiratan Hepp,Luiz; Carvalho,Cristiane; Palma-Silva,Cleber.
The aim of this study was to determine if the rate of degradation and the habitat type associated with two submersed macrophytes affect the structure of the invertebrate communities in a shallow subtropical lake. We evaluated debris decomposition rate with a litter bags approach, assigned to four treatments: Potamogeton pectinatus decomposing inside their own stand (PP) and inside a Chara zeylanica stand (PC), and C. zeylanica decomposing inside their own stand (CC) and inside a P. pectinatus stand (CP). During the degradation experiment (20 days), we evaluated the fauna associated both with debris and at live macrophytes. The debris were washed, dried and the coefficient of degradation was determined. We estimated the richness and abundance of taxa of...

Stable isotope evidence for trophic overlap of sympatric Mexican Lake Chapala silversides (Teleostei: Atherinopsidae: Chirostoma spp.) Neotropical Ichthyology
Mercado-Silva,Norman; Lyons,John; Moncayo-Estrada,Rodrigo; Gesundheit,Pablo; Krabbenhoft,Trevor J.; Powell,Daniel L.; Piller,Kyle R..
We explore the trophic role that a diverse sympatric group of fishes in the genus Chirostoma play in a large, shallow lake in central Mexico, Lake Chapala. We use δ13C and δ15N stable isotope - based food web analyses to explore how they relate to other components of the Lake Chapala ecosystem. We find five Chirostoma species in top trophic levels of the Chapala food web compared to other fishes, relying on a combination of zooplankton, fish and benthic resources as energy sources. Food web metric analyses showed generally overlapping trophic niches for members of Chirostoma, especially in terms of δ13C. However, C. jordani had lower mean δ15N isotopic values than C. promelas. As a group, "pescados blancos" (C. sphyraena and C. promelas) also had higher...
