Squalus acanthias (Squalidae) y Raja flavirostris (=Dipturus chilensis) (Rajidae). OceanDocs
Garcia de la Rosa, S.B..
As a general rule, sharks and rays play an important role in the energy exchanges among higher trophic levels of the marine food chain and some of them, with an important impact as piscivorous predators. Squalus acanthias (Squalidae) and Raja flavirostris (=Dipturus chilensis )(Rajidae), are two elasmobranchs with high apparition frequencies in the SW Atlantic, in the coastal and demersal fishing trawls, co-existing and predating on the principal stocks of bony fish there located, especially the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi). Both species could be transformed into alternative fishing resources, even though they are not currently commercially developed as such. The knowledge on their biology, given in great detail, will provide information for a...

de la Serna, J.M.; Valeiras, J..
(Contribution to the biological study of blue shark (Prionace glauca) incidental catch by the Spanish surface longline fisheries for swordfish in the western Mediterranean). Blue shark (Prionace glauca) bycatches in the Spanish surface longline fisheries in the Mediterranean targeting swordfish (Xiphias gladius) from 1999 to 2001 represented 2% of the total catch. Information from onboard observers during 861 fishing sets in 26 longliners indicated that the highest catches were made in area 4-35000 (Alboran Sea) which represents 75.6% of the total observed catch of blue shark. The observed CPUE are from 5.5 to 34.1 kg/1000 hooks. Mean size at capture (LJFL) was 141.6 cm (SD=35.88). The proportion of females from the total was 0.5.

Kitefin shark Dalatia licha (Dalatiidae)fishery in the northeastern Atlantic and some recommendations for elasmobranchs explotation OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G..
In the Azores Islands (NE Atlantic), between 1986 and 1998, Dalatias licha was caught to obtain liver oil. A drastic abundance decline, probably attributed to a high level of exploitation, was observed. In Argentina elasmobranchs have undergone intensive fishing and, at present, catches are compromised. The history of the fishery in Azores should be taken as example and warning when implementing elasmobranchs fisheries management in Argentina.

Baisre, J. A..

The life history of Chondrichthyans results in a low capacity to recover from the fishery human impact, Mustelus schmitti is the most landing shark in Argentina (SW Atlantic)where reductions in the abundance have been detected. The sustainability of M. schmitti to exploitation using a demographic analysis, was examined. The intrinsic rate of population increase (r)and extinction risk under several harvesting strategies were estimated. For this purpose a stage-structured female-only matrix model was applied, considering the mortality and reproductive parameters to each stage. The estimate of length at maturity from the logistic curve was 56.04 cm. The fertility per female ranged between 1 and 15 pups and it was increased with total length. The Mortality...

López-Garro, A.; Zanella-Cesarotto, Il.; Arauz-Vargas, R..
Sharks present strong intraspecific changes in feeding habits, which may vary according to size, geographic location and season. This study analyzed the stomach contents of 52 juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks (25 females and 27 males) caught by artisanal vessels in the Gulf of Nicoya. Regarding the organisms found in the stomachs, 41.07 % were teleost fish, 30.36 % mollusks and 28.57 % crustaceans. Mollusks presented the highest Relative Importance Index (RII) (43.05 %), followed by teleost fish (41.37 %) and crustaceans (15.58 %). Squids (Loliginidae) were the items with the greatest RII (32.57 %). By means of the Pianka index, a relatively low overlap between sexes was identified, suggesting a spatial sexual segregation and, in consequence, an...

OceanDocs
Lucifora, L.O..
Reproduction, age, growth, feeding habits and population dynamics of four large temperate sharks (sand tiger shark Carcharias taurus, school shark Galeorhinus galeus, copper shark Carcharhinus brachyurus, and broadnose sevengill shark Notorynchus cepedianus) were studied in Anegada Bay (between 39°50' and 40°40'S), Argentina. Data were gathered from 1089 individuals examined during a three-year study period. Age and growth were studied through examination of vertebral centra only in the first three species. Population dynamics was modeled through stage matrix population models. Most sand tiger sharks examined were adults and evidence indicates that they use the study area as a mating ground. Sand tiger males mature at 193 and females at 223 cm total length...

The...
