ABSTRACT This work reports the dating of a fossil human tooth and shell found at the archaeological site Toca do Enoque located in Serra das Confusões National Park (Piauí, Brazil). Many prehistoric paintings have been found at this site. An archaeological excavation unearthed three sepulchers with human skeletons and some shells. Two Brazilian laboratories, in Ribeirão Preto (USP) and Recife (UFPE), independently performed Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements to date the tooth and the shell and obtain the equivalent dose received by each sample. The laboratories determined similar ages for the tooth and the shell (~4.8 kyBP). The results agreed with C-14 dating of the shell and other samples (charcoal) collected in the same sepulcher. Therefore,... |

ABSTRACT The study aimed to evaluate the effect of different levels of chlorine in drinking water of laying hens on zootechnical performance, eggs shell quality, hemogasometry levels and calcium content in tibia. 144 Hy-Line laying hens, 61 weeks old, were used distributed in 24 metabolism cages. They were subjected to water diets, for a period of 28 days, using sodium hypochlorite as a chlorine source in order to obtain the following concentrations: 5ppm (control), 20ppm, 50ppm, and 100ppm. Their performance was evaluated through water consumption, feed intake, egg production and weight, egg mass, feed conversion. Shell quality was measured by specific gravity. At the end of the experiment, arterial blood was collected for blood gas level assessment and a... |

We evaluated the gastropod shell utilization pattern of the hermit crab Clibanarius vittatus (Bosc, 1802) at Pescadores Beach in São Vicente, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Specimens were collected monthly from May 2001 through April 2003, in the intertidal zone at low tide. The crabs were weighed and their carapace shield length measured. All gastropod shells were identified and had their shell biometric parameters (total length and aperture length) measured (mm) and weighed (g). A total of 2,344 hermit crabs (644 males, 1,594 females, 45 ovigerous females and 61 individuals in intersex), using 13 species of gastropod shells, were collected. Stramonita haemastoma (Linnaeus, 1767), Cymatium parthenopeum (Von Salis, 1793) and Achatina fulica (Bowdich, 1822)... |

Marine mollusc shell growth has been widely measured using fluorochrome marking. In order to test the efficiency and reliability of calcein staining on P. margaritifera shells and pearls, the present study examined two administration methods, different concentrations and several immersion times.Immersion in a 150 mg.L-1 calcein solution for 12 h to 24 h appeared to be the best method for marking P. margaritifera shells. For pearl marking, injection of a 200 mg.L-1 calcein solution into the pearl pouch was the optimal method. Calcein marking was then used to measure the influence of food resource levels on the shell growth. Groups of 23-month-old P. margaritifera were fed at three trophic levels for two months. The two highest food levels tested (6 000... |

We investigate the environmental and biological controls on oxygen isotope ratios in the shells of modern Pecten maximus bivalves collected alive in the Bay of Brest (France). Seasonal delta(18)O profiles, obtained by drilling the daily calcite ridges deposited at the surface of the left valve, were compared with in situ measurements of temperature and salinity. We show that P. maximus delta(18)O values accurately track seasonal variations in bottom water temperature. Shell growth rate has no significant effect on shell delta(18)O values. Our study demonstrates that daily variations in water temperature can be reconstructed within about 0.5 degrees C. Temperatures estimated with the paleotemperature equation established in this study were compared with... |

Dr Margaretha Brongersma-Sanders, palaeontologist, pioneer geochemist, geobiologist and oceanographer, Officer of the Order of Oranje Nassau was born 100 years ago (February 20th, 1905) in Kampen in The Netherlands. The fields of research that she covered during her lifetime include taxonomy of recent and fossil, principally freshwater fish; “fish kills” and mass mortality in the sea (especially of fish); taphonomy and preservation of fish; upwelling; anoxic conditions, linked to fish mortality and the origin of bituminous black shales and oil; red tides and harmful algal blooms; trace metal enrichment in recent and fossil sediments, especially the Kupferschiefer; the origin of evaporites; algal mats and stromatolites. She was the first to categorise fish... |

Megalobulimus K. Miller, 1878 is a genus of land snails that includes the largest living snails in the Neotropics. The main goal of this paper was to review all species of Megalobulimus that have a red lip, and which are distributed in Peru. We carried out a detailed description of their shells and soft parts, and conducted a multivariate analysis on their shells and geographic distribution. There are two species reported from Peru, Megalobulimus capillaceus (Pfeiffer, 1855) and Megalobulimus separabilis (Fulton, 1903). Megalobulimus capillaceus is known to occur in three regions - San Martín, Huánuco and Cusco - but the Cusco population is undoubtedly different from all remaining populations, and is recognized herein as a new species, Megalobulimus... |
