Species richness and distribution of benthic tidal flat fauna of the Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania ArchiMer
Wijnsma, G; Wolff, Wj; Meijboom, A; Duiven, P; De Vlas, J.
The Banc d'Arguin in Mauritania, West Africa, is an area of tidal flats and shallow inshore waters bordering the sandy desert of the Sahara. The project Banc d'Arguin 1985-1986 investigated predominantly benthic biomass and production, the same data allow investigation of the species diversity and the distribution of the tidal flat fauna of the Banc d'Arguin. We sieved and analysed 410 core samples (diameter 10 cm) from 82 locations with 0.6 mm mesh size. A total of 111 taxa were identified. Polychaeta were most diverse with 42 species belonging to 20 families. Other large species groups were Gastropoda (20 species, 14 families), Amphipoda (14 taxa, 8 families) and Bivalvia (15 species, 10 families). Densities ranged from 152 to 5635 ind. m(-2), with an...

Heterospecific sociality of birds on beaches from southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Cestari,César.
Studies on the sociality of heterospecific assemblages of birds have promoted a greater understanding of the types of interactions and survivorship between coexisting species. This study verified the group compositions in bird assemblages and analyzed the sociality of migratory and resident species on sandy beaches of southeastern Brazil. A transect was established on the median portion of beaches and all the groups of bird species (monospecific, heterospecific) and solitary individuals were registered four days per month from November 2006 to April 2007. The sociality of each species was calculated by its frequency in heterospecific groups, its proportional number of contacts with other species in heterospecific groups, and the number of species that it...

Body mass and acquisition of breeding plumage of wintering Calidris pusilla (Linnaeus) (Aves, Scolopacidae) in the coast of Pernambuco, north-eastern Brazil Zoologia
Fedrizzi,Carmem E.; Azevedo Júnior,Severino M. de; Larrazábal,Maria E. Lacerda de.
Annually, large flocks of semipalmated sandpiper Calidris pusilla (Linnaeus, 1766) winter along South America coast, between September-April. They store fats in order to moult and return to their breeding grounds. Here, was examined body masses and plumage of adults Semipalmated Sandpipers during the departure month to evaluate the relationship between body mass and plumage. Fieldwork was conducted at Coroa do Avião (7º40'S, 34º50'W), Pernambuco. Birds were trapped in mist-nets between April 1990 and 1997. They were weighed, and aged according to plumage. Adult plumage may be (1) non-breeding, (2) pre-breeding, and (3) breeding. A total of 213 birds were weighed and examined, so that 8.0% (17) presented non-breeding plumage, 54.0% (115) pre-breeding, and...

Monitoramento de aves limícolas na Salina Diamante Branco, Galinhos, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil Zoologia
Larrazábal,Maria Eduarda de; Azevedo Júnior,Severino Mendes de; Pena,Oldair.
Monitoring of the shorebirds of the Diamanle Branco saline located at the municipality of Galinhos, in the coast of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, was initiated in 1998, with qualitative surveys, bird traps using mist net, captured and banding and field observations on the diet of some species. Parameters such as constancy were verified, specific diversity was calculated through Pearson correlation, We registered 21 species of shorebirds, as follows: Pluvialis squatarola (Linnaeus, 1758), Charadrius semipulmatus Bonaparte 1825, renaria interpres (Linnaeus, 1758), Tringaflavipes (Gmelin, 1789), T. melanoleuca (Gmelin, 1789) and Actitis macularia (Linnaeus, 1766). It was observed the reproduction of Charadrius collaris Vieillot, 1818, C. wilsonia Ord,...

First record of Charadrius melodus Ord (Aves Charadriiformes) in Brazil Zoologia
Azevedo Júnior,Severino Mendes de; Larrazábal,Maria Eduarda de; Pena,Oldair.
Charadrius melodus Ord, 1824 were captured at Diamante Branco saline, at Galinhos municipal district in Rio Grande do Norte, at the Northeast coast of Brazil. Four individuals were captured in October and two in December. All of them were in adult phase, showing the intermediary plumage with moults of the outline feathers. One individual captured in October showed moult for the first primary pinion and other captured also in October showed moult in the second pair of rectrices. The captures of C. melodus in Rio Grande do Norte consist in the first record of the species for Brazil.

The birds at Ilha Comprida beach (São Paulo State, Brazil): a multivariate approach Biota Neotropica
Barbieri,Edison; Paes,Eduardo Tavares.
Birds were censused weekly from January 1999 to January 2001 along Ilha Comprida beach, a barrier island off São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. To evaluate the similarity in the bird's species composition among the weekly surveys, species counts data were arranged on a data matrix with 144 weekly surveys, analyzed following a multivariate analysis protocol. We counted a total of 205,399 individuals and 52 species. Migratory birds were an important component of the avifauna (maximum N = 21,294 individuals and 14 species). The largest numbers of birds were observed during summer, when Nearctic migrants arrive. All 14 of the most common species were migrants, including Calidris alba, Sterna maxima, Charadrius semipalmatus, Sterna hirundo, Thalasseus maximus,...

Mapping of mudflats with UAV images in La Bocana de Iscuandé, Colombian Pacific coast Boletín de Investigaciones
Mina-Cartagena,Camilo F.; Fuentes,José E.; González,Richard Johnston.
ABSTRACT Conservation planning for marine-coastal environments requires updated and detailed maps; the aim of this work is to generate detailed maps for two mudflats in the Iscuandé River Delta (Bocana de Iscuandé) in the Colombian Pacific Coast (Department of Nariño). These are important areas for fauna, especially migratory shorebirds. To address this problem, this study investigated the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as an alternative for collecting detailed mapping information in areas of difficult access using photogrammetric methods and a geographic information system (GIS). UAV images were used to generate maps with a high level of detail at a scale of 1:10,000 that include detailed information about environments such as mudflats and...

Distribution and abundance of shorebirds in tidal flats of Sanquianga National Natural Park and the mouth of Iscuandé, Nariño (Colombia), between 2009 and 2020 Boletín de Investigaciones
Johnston-González,Richard; Eusse-González,Diana; Valencia-Martínez,Natasha.
ABSTRACT 11 % of shorebirds using the American Pacific Flyway are declining and an additional 46 % have no information to estimate their population status. To understand the magnitude of these changes and their causes, baseline information is required especially at sites of concentration like the mouth of Iscuandé River (IS) and the Sanquianga National Natural Park (SNNP). To characterize the composition of shorebird communities there, ten years of standardized counts were analyzed. Using proportional abundance, prevalence and mean density of each location, it was evaluated differences between sites with a different marine influence of the Patía River. IS contributed to 63 % of the average abundance in the study area, where 80 % were small shorebirds....

Microglia and neurons in the hippocampus of migratory sandpipers BJMBR
Diniz,C.G.; Magalhães,N.G.M.; Sousa,A.A.; Santos Filho,C.; Diniz,D.G.; Lima,C.M.; Oliveira,M.A.; Paulo,D.C.; Pereira,P.D.C.; Sherry,D.F.; Picanço-Diniz,C.W..
The semipalmated sandpiper Calidris pusilla and the spotted sandpiper Actitis macularia are long- and short-distance migrants, respectively. C. pusilla breeds in the sub-arctic and mid-arctic tundra of Canada and Alaska and winters on the north and east coasts of South America. A. macularia breeds in a broad distribution across most of North America from the treeline to the southern United States. It winters in the southern United States, and Central and South America. The autumn migration route of C. pusilla includes a non-stop flight over the Atlantic Ocean, whereas autumn route of A. macularia is largely over land. Because of this difference in their migratory paths and the visuo-spatial recognition tasks involved, we hypothesized that hippocampal...
