ABSTRACT Planting of forest species of timber interest helps to reduce the deforestation pressure on the Amazon forest, promotes sustainable development of the producing region and generates ecological benefits. The objective of this work was to evaluate the survival rate and growth of four native (Swietenia macrophylla, Parkia decussata, Dipteryx odorata and Jacaranda copaia) and one exotic (Acacia mangium) species in monospecific plantations (spacing of 2 x 2 m) established on areas previously used for grazing, in Itacoatiara, State of Amazonas, Brazil. When the trees were four years old, we collected biometric data [height at 1.30 m (DBH, cm), crown projection area (CPA, m2), total height (Ht, m), commercial cylinder volume (Vcyl, m3 ha-1)], and... |

ABSTRACT The selection of yerba mate superior genotypes, based on each plant leaf weight, is based on genetic parameters obtained from experimental plantations and it is practically impossible from the fourth year of age. Therefore, we estimate genetic parameters and check the feasibility of selection through notes and weight estimates of each tree at 18.5 years of age. The genetic material consists of a combined trial of provenances and progenies of half-sibs with 140 progenies from 7 provenances, installed in Ivaí, Paraná, Brazil, in a randomized block design with 10 repetitions. The genetic control of leaf production is of low magnitude (ĥ2a= 0.175042 ± 0.0393) revealing high influence of the environment. The additive genetic correlations between the... |

Due to climate change, forests are likely to face new hazards, which may require adaptation of our existing silvicultural practices. However, it is difficult to imagine a forest management approach that can simultaneously minimize all risks of damage. Multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) has been developed to help decision makers choose between actions that require reaching a compromise among criteria of different weights. We adapted this method and produced a multicriteria risk analysis (MCRA) to compare the risk of damage associated with various forest management systems with a range of management intensity. The objective was to evaluate the effect of four forest management alternatives (FMAs) (i.e., close to nature, extensive management with combined... |

ABSTRACT: The main of arborization of grasslands is the comfort supplied to the animals by the shadow of the trees, which not only increases the milk production but also improves the reproduction of the cows. In hot regions and shadowed areas, the grazing behavior of animals is changed resulting in better distribution of rumination during the day and more time for animals to rest. An experiment to select species for arborization of grasslands in the Cerrado areas was installed in Planaltina-DF, on a grassland of Brachiaria decumbens. In this experiment 21 species were evaluated. Based on tree height, trunk diameter, tree canopy and survival after 57 months, the best species for grasslands arborization were: Jacaré (Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) J. F.... |

ABSTRACT: The charcoal production from planted forests has been insufficient to take care of the demand and has implied in more pressure on the forest remainders, in special of the biome Cerrado. In 2005, the charcoal consumption in Brazil reached 38 million of MDC (Meter of Charcoal). The evolution of the charcoal consumption produced from native species passed of 86 % of the total, in 1980, to approximately 49.6 %, in 2005, whereas the charcoal produced from planted forests jumped of 14,1 %, in 1980, to 50,4 %, in 2005. Minas Gerais is the greatest consumer of charcoal and consumed 66 % of the Brazilian production, in 2005. In Brazil, in 2004, 115,580 ha of energy forests had been planted, of which 83.6 % in Minas Gerais. Of the 5,5 million tons of... |
