Characterization of Tympanic Cavity Volume in Newborns using Computerized Tomography Scanning International Journal of Morphology
Acer,Niyazi; Unur,Erdogan; Sönmez,M. Fatih; Zararsiz,Gökmen; Arslan,Ayla; Sagiroglu,Ayse; Ertekin,Tolga; Erkan,Mustafa; Coskun,Abdulhakim; Bilgen,Mehmet.
This study reports tympanic cavity (TC) volume in newborns, which was missing in the literature. Ex vivo histology and computerized tomography (CT) scans were performed on temporal bone and data were analyzed in part using software developed in house. CT images with a slice thickness of 0.5 mm were obtained from 5 newborn cadavers and analyzed independently by two expert researchers. The border of the TC was delineated manually and measurement of area of interest was calculated on masked images. Then, the area measurements from all sections were added to estimate the total volume. The agreements between the histological and CT findings were then compared for accuracy, repeatability and reliability. The Dice and Jaccard similarity coefficient measures were...

Seed banks in pastures of Central Amazonian Region PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Costa, Joanne Régis; Mitja, Danielle; Leal Filho, Niwton.
This study investigated the seed bank of pastures in disturbed areas in Amazonia Central. In four pastures, 20 samples of 15 x 15 cm at 0 to 5 cm depth and six samples in a depths of 5 to 10 and 10 to 30 cm. For counting and seed identification, the seedling emergence method in a green house was used. Significant differences in seed densities were observed among the four pastures, varying from 304 to 6153 seeds per m², at 0 to 5 cm depth, showing high variation among the areas. The number of species varied from 17 to 27 at the superficial layer. The seed banks contained mainly invasive herbs and pioneer species characteristic of disturbed areas. The succession plant which will develop require a longer time interval to present strata shrubs / trees with...

Interference of the Association Oxyfluorfen + Flumioxazin and the Addition of Mineral Oil on a Phytosociological Survey Planta Daninha
MENDES,K.F.; GOULART,M.O.; INOUE,M.H.; MERTENS,T.B.; SILVA,I.P..
ABSTRACT: Phytosociological studies are extremely important for the management of weeds in cultivated areas. Thus, the goal of this work was to evaluate the interference of mineral oil associated with oxyfluorfen and flumioxazin, through the phytosociological survey of weeds. Therefore, this experiment was conducted in a 2 x 5 + 1 factorial design and with four replications; the following oxyfluorfen + flumioxazin associations were evaluated: 240 + 50, 192 + 40, 144 + 30, 96 + 20 and 48 + 10 g a.i. ha-1, with and without the addition of mineral oil, including a control sample without application. Thirty days after the application, plant density, frequency and abundance of species were determined, and so were frequency, density and relative abundance, as...

Italy and China Agri-Food Trade: Integration, Similarity and Competition AgEcon
Antimiani, Alessandro; Henke, Roberto.
The paper looks at the increasing integration of China into the world market, with a specific focus on agricultural and food trade and on the Italian market. Agricultural trade among Italy and China has been limited to secondary products, especially originated in the livestock sector. However, in the last decade exchanges have been constantly increasing and the set of products changing deeply. Specifically, Italian exports to China have been specialising towards the typical "Made in Italy" processed products, showing a potential market for Italian agricultural and food products. In order to test the opportunity and the risks of the integration of China into the world agro-food markets, some similarity indices have been calculated, with refer to two...

Is the nitrification a redundant process in arid regions?: activity, abundance and diversity of nitrifier microorganisms RChHN
NOE,LAURA; ABRIL,ADRIANA.
We tested if the microbial functional redundancy concept (theory relating changes in ecosystem functioning by species loss) apply for changes in the ammonium-oxidizing community (nitrifier bacteria) due to: a) grazing disturbance, b) seasonal variations (dry season vs. wet season), c) habitat type (soil vs. organic residues), and d) ecological conditions (two eco-regions), in an arid region of central-western of Argentina. We determined: a) abundance of culturable nitrifier bacteria, b) nitrification activity and efficiency, and c) nitrifier community genetic structure by PCR-DGGE (richness and similarity index). Grazing did not change the nitrifier abundance, activity and richness, while seasonally and eco-region effects were scarce. Contrarily, the...

Classification of areas associated with soybean yield and agrometeorological variables through fuzzy clustering Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Coimbra de Araújo,Everton; Johann,Jerry A; Uribe-Opazo,Miguel A; Camargo,Eduardo C.G.
E.C. Araújo, J.A. Johann, M.A. Uribe-Opazo, and E.C.G. Camargo. 2013. Classification of areas associated with soybean yield and agrometeorological variables through fuzzy clustering. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(3): 617-627. This study aimed to apply an approach based on fuzzy clustering for the classification of areas associated with soybean yield combined with the following agrometeorological variables: rainfall, average air temperature and average global solar radiation. The study was conducted with 48 municipalities in the western region of Paraná State, Brazil, with data from the crop-year 2007/2008. Through the fuzzy c-means algorithm, it was possible to form groups of municipalities that were similar in soybean yield using the Method of Decision by the Higher...
