Linking life-history traits, spatial distribution and abundance of two species of lugworms to bait collection: A case study for sustainable management plan ArchiMer
De Cubber, Lola; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Fisseau, Charline; Cornille, Vincent; Gaudron, Sylvie Marylene.
Arenicola spp. are marine benthic polychaetes dug for bait by anglers. Without regulation, this activity can lead to the decrease of lugworms' population meanwhile affecting the physical characteristics of the beach and the biodiversity. Here, we identified through morphology and genetics two species of lugworms, Arenicola marina and A. defodiens, within a Marine Protected Area of the Eastern English Channel (France). For each species, abundance and spatial distribution were assessed using a stratified random sampling and interpolation at four studied sites, as well as some life-history traits. These data were compared to lugworms' collection data to estimate its sustainability and to provide potential management measures. At one site, A. marina was...

Histology of Tritia mutabilis gonads: using reproductive biology to support sustainable fishery management ArchiMer
Mallet, Alicia; Jouvenel, Jean-yves; Broyon, Morgane; Pirot, Nelly; Geffroy, Benjamin.
The mutable nassa, Tritia mutabilis, a marine gastropod that is widely exploited on the Adriatic coast is an important source of income for small-scale fishermen in the Mediterranean Sea, particularly in the Gulf of Lion. However, the lack of knowledge on the ecology and biology of this species limits our capacities to propose and produce an effective management plan. As a result, stocks are currently declining, especially in Italy. In order to optimize a management plan for this fishery, we designed a study to better characterize the reproductive biology of T. mutabilis, using gonad histology and performing a regular monitoring of population size frequency. The average shell height of individuals during the breeding period was 24 ± 2.7mm for males and 30...

Reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (Reunion Island). Part 1: oocyte development, sexual maturity and spawning ArchiMer
Poisson, Francois; Fauvel, Christian.
The reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) was investigated from catches of the Reunion Island-based longline swordfish fishery between 19-25 degrees S and 48-54 degrees E. Thus, 1727 swordfish (size range 75-289 cm, lower jaw-to-fork length, LJFL) were sampled on board commercial fishing vessels during the period of May 1998 to January 2001. Reproductive activity was assessed using macroscopic gonad characteristics, trends of gonadal indexes for both sexes, oocyte size-frequency distributions and microscopic investigation of oocyte development stages. Size at first maturity (L-50) for female and male swordfish was estimated in Indian Ocean for the first time. L50 was estimated at 170 cm and 120 cm (LJFL) for females and males, respectively....

Reproductive biology of pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) (Teleostei: Characidae) in the Cuiabá River Basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Costa,Rosa Maria Rodrigues da; Mateus,Lúcia Aparecida de Fátima.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the reproductive strategy and life-history traits involved in the reproductive processes of P. mesopotamicus in two regions of the Cuiabá River basin, the first of these encompassing its headwaters (Cuiabazinho River - Rosário Oeste) and the other the flood area of the Cuiabá River (Porto Cercado - Poconé). A total of 391 individuals were sampled monthly from August 2006 to July 2007, 159 from the headwaters and 232 from the flood area. The size structure indicated that the females in the headwaters attain longer lengths than the males, while no differences in length were found in the flood area. Females predominated in the headwaters, while males outnumbered females in the flood area. The reproductive period in the...

Aspectos da reprodução do peixe-porco, Balistes capriscus (Gmelin) (Actinopterygii, Tetraodontiformes, Balistidae) coletado na costa sul do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil Zoologia
Bernardes,Roberto Ávila; Dias,June Ferraz.
The monthly analysis of maturity stage frequency suggested that spawning of the grey triggerfish Balistes capriscus (Gmelin, 1788) is annual, total and occurs from November to February in the south of São Paulo State, Brazil. Size at first maturity is 169 mm for females and 200 mm for males. Condition factor estimated considering and disconsidering gonad weight (K and K') showed maximum values related to periods of higher frequency of females at advanced maturity stage. ΔK was higher in December, January and February, and was related to the maximum frequency of mature females. As K estimates the gonad condition it could be used as a maturity and breeding season index for this species. The gonadosomatic relation behaved the same as K values.
