Larval performance and skeletal deformities in farmed gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) fed with graded levels of Vitamin A enriched rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) ArchiMer
Fernandez, I; Hontoria, F; Ortiz Delgado, J; Kotzamanis, Y; Estevez, A; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Gisbert, E.
Several nutritional studies have found a direct effect of several vitamins in chondrogenic and osteogenic development during early life stages of marine fish species. In the present study, the effect of vitamin A (VA) in gilthead sea bream skeletogenesis was evaluated by means of four different dietary regimes (enriched rotifers) containing increasing levels of total VA (75,109, 188 and 723 ng total VA mg(-1) DW). Dietary treatments were offered to larvae during the rotifer-feeding phase (4-20 days after hatching), while later all groups were fed with Artemia nauplii and weaned onto the same inert diet. Different dietary doses of VA affected gilthead sea bream larval growth, survival, performance (maturation of the digestive system) and quality (incidence...

Manual of Fish Sclerochronology ArchiMer
Panfili, Jacques; De Pontual, Helene; Troadec, Herve; Wrigh, Peter J..
Sclerochronology, the study of calcified structures to reconstruct the past history of living organisms, is central to fish biology and fisheries management. This manual aims to provide an overview of the current theoretical and practical aspects of sclerochronological studies. By providing information on the nature of calcified structures (otoliths, scales, skeleton), their uses in fish research and methods for preparation and examination, the manual constitutes a comprehensive guide for researchers, technicians and students either new to the field or interested in expanding their range of expertise. The enclosed multimedia version (DVD) is supplemented by videos illustrating the main technical procedures with an alternative navigation mode based on...

Effect of dietary vitamin A on Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) skeletogenesis and larval quality ArchiMer
Fernandez, Ignacio; Pimentel, Marta S.; Ortiz-delgado, Juan B.; Hontoria, Francisco; Sarasquete, Carmen; Estevez, Alicia; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Gisbert, Enric.
The effects of different levels of vitamin A (VA) in Senegalese sole larval performance and development were evaluated by means of a dietary dose-response experiment using enriched Artemia metanauplii as a carrier of this micronutrient. Larvae were fed from 6 to 27 days post hatch (dph) with enriched Artemia containing graded levels of total VA (1.3, 2.1, 4.5 and 12.9 mu g VA mg(-1) DW). The content of VA in live prey directly affected its accumulation in larvae and early juveniles. Retinyl palmitate accumulated during larval ontogeny, whereas retinol showed the opposite trend, decreasing from hatching until 41 dph and then remaining constant until the end of the study. Inmetamorphic larvae (10 and 15 dph), VA did not affect the number of thyroid follicles...

Skeleton Anatomy of Five Species of Genus Urotrygon (Chondrichthyes: Urotrygonidae) International Journal of Morphology
Montes Domínguez,Héctor M; González Isáis,Mónica.
Skeleton of batoids has been important to outline kinship relations in this group. Therefore, the objective of this work is describing the anatomy of five species of genus Urotrygon. Skeleton of Urotrygonids displayed a common morphological pattern, with the following differences: 1) preorbital processes are reduced in Urotrygon nana and Urotrygon munda, and developed on all other species; 2) the first postorbital process is reduced in U. nana and U. munda; 3) the first hypobranchial cartilage is fragmented only in Urotrygon rogersi; 4) only Urotrygon aspidura had a bridge in the basibranchial cartilage; lateral processes of the synarcuale in U. aspidura are long and thin, while short and wide in U. nana and U. rogersi; 6) U. nana has only one single...

The peculiarities of the masticator muscles in rodents Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Spataru,C.; Spataru,M.; Vulpe,V.; Lazar,M..
Comparative research concerning masticatory musculature in squirrel, muskrat and rabbit, take into account the emphasizing and morphofunctional interpretation of the osteomuscular particularities involved in the prehension and mastication processes. The development of the coronoid process on the muskrat and squirrel demonstrates the growing of the force when raising the mandible by increasing the action force attached to the temporal muscle, with insertion on the coronoid process. In comparison with that, in the case of rabbits, both the coronoid process and the temporal muscle are reduced. From a philogenetic point of view, it has been found that the species that have the articular condyle lowered at or under the level of the dental tables (carnivores)...

Familial osteopetrosis in Agouti paca: report of nine cases Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Coutinho,P.S.; Ocarino,N.M.; Ferreira,M.B.; Resende,R.; Silva,V.L.; Guedes,R.M.C.; Serakides,R..
Nine cases of familial osteopetrosis were studied in Agouti paca rodents maintained in captivity. Animals were distributed in three groups depending on the severity of their skeletal lesions. Based upon clinical, radiological, and microscopic findings, it was concluded that one animal had level I lesions, three animals had level II lesions, and five animals had level III osteopetrosis and osteonecrosis. Throughout the entire axial and appendicular skeleton, there was an increased amount of both trabecular and cortical bone tissue. All analyzed bones showed thickened cortex and reduced medullary canals. Bone trabeculae were thick and confluent. Cortex showed a narrowing of Haversian canals. Numerous cementing lines resulted in typical mosaic patterns....
