Quality Standards for Food Products - A Particular Burden for Small Producers in Developing Countries? AgEcon
Chemnitz, Christine; Grethe, Harald; Kleinwechter, Ulrich.
This paper develops an analytical framework which structures the problem of whether, how and to what extent small producers in developing countries are disadvantaged by the increasing prevalence of food quality standards. Based on a literature review, the empirical evidence is structured and research gaps are identified. The paper finds that small and medium producers rarely comply without support from downstream actors. In case of well-educated and relatively wealthy farmers, forward integration is also found. No empirical support exists for the intuitively appealing hypothesis of a lower cost of compliance per unit of output for large producers. Zusammenfassung In diesem Papier wird ein Analyserahmen entwickelt, um die Möglichkeit und das Ausmaß der...

Validation of Factors Influencing Successful Small Scale Farming in North Carolina AgEcon
Yeboah, Anthony K.; Owens, John Paul; Bynum, Jarvetta S.; Boisson, Daniel.
This phase of the research project involves developing a survey instrument to test the validity and predictive value of the variables identified in previous case studies. Given the importance of small farm viability, this research project focuses on identifying ways to further enhance successful small farming in North Carolina. The survey instrument was designed to solicit production and financial data, attitudes and beliefs about farming, as well as demographic questions. The results demonstrated that successful farmers indicators were the “love of farming” and “manageable debt”. Other strong indicators of successful farmers included a combination of marketing strategies that utilize technology such as websites as well as local farmers markets and...

DESENVOLVIMENTO TERRITORIAL E PERÍMETROS IRRIGADOS: AVALIAÇÃO DAS POLÍTICAS GOVERNAMENTAIS IMPLANTADAS NOS PERÍMETROS IRRIGADOS BEBEDOURO E NILO COELHO EM PETROLINA (PE). AgEcon
Sobel, Tiago Farias; Ortega, Antonio Cesar.

Is the Facilitation of Sustainable Market Access Achievable? Design and Implementation Lessons from Armenia AgEcon
Gow, Hamish R.; Shanoyan, Aleksan.
Over the past three decades the globalization in agri-food sector has been accompanied by a dramatic restructuring, liberalization and privatization of markets often with serious adverse consequences for small farmers in developing and transition countries. Consequently, governments and the international donor community have markedly shifted their development policies from traditional technology transfer approaches towards more market-driven approaches of linking farmers to markets. The international agricultural development literature has begun exploring the appropriate structure of third-party facilitated institutions and enforcement mechanisms to support linking small farmers to markets. Based upon a series of long-term qualitative and quantitative...
