Joint use of echosounding, fishing and video techniques to assess the structure of fish aggregations around moored Fish Aggregating Devices in Martinique (Lesser Antilles) ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Josse, E; Gervain, P; Reynal, Lionel; Chantrel, Josselin.
From April 2003 to April 2004 monthly sea surveys were conducted around 2 fish aggregating devices (FADs) moored at 2000 and 2500 m depth in Martinique (Lesser Antilles). The use of a dual frequency splitbeam echosounder combined with an underwater camera and fishing methods allowed assessment of average space and time distribution of pelagic fish aggregated beneath the FADs, as well as identification of their overall size and species composition. At daytime, 4 fish aggregations were identified at each FAD, representing 4 distinct types: i) an aggregation of small juvenile tuna (mean fork length, FL: 30 cm) observed very close to the surface in 25% of daytime periods; ii) a small surface aggregation dominated by carangids, Caranx crysos, present in 65% of...

La pecherie de langouste rouge en Corse ArchiMer
Marin, Jean.
The european red spiny lobster, Palinurus elephas, is the main target species of the small-scale fishery in Corsica. The fishery is described fleet, fishing areas, fishing strategy and fishing gear ; fishing effort, yield, c.p.u.e, and complementary.catches ; resource condition. Its specific problem, the economic overfishing, is analysed. Finally, it has been tried to assess the fishing regulation impact (minimum market size, fishing seasonal close, fishing sanctuaries).

Elements sur les investissements et les couts de production de la petite peche non chalutiere bigoudene ArchiMer
Girard, Sophie.
A classification of non trawling small fishing boats of the Guilvinec port synthesizes a first desc ription study. The characteristics used for this typology are the number of labour and the fishing gear. The analysis of the income and the investment allows for an estimate of the differences in productivity and in capital intensity among the small-scale fisheries. Then, the analysis of a survey on the production costs deals mainly with the remuneration of labour in the artisanal fisheries.

Sustainability of tropical small-scale fisheries: Integrated assessment in French Guiana ArchiMer
Cisse, Abdoul; Blanchard, Fabian; Guyader, Olivier.
Like many tropical small-scale fisheries, the French Guiana coastal fishery is characterized by the high fish biodiversity of its ecosystem, the weak selectivity of the fleets exploiting the resources, and the heterogeneity of the vessels in terms of size and fishing techniques. The Rapfish method is used to assess sustainability within 11 fishery systems by means of 27 attributes relating to ecological, economic, social, and technological fields. Overall results indicate an average performance in the weak sustainability range. Comparisons made among the FSs show a gradient of sustainability performance from the western portion of the coast to the eastern portion. Several recommendations are formulated to raise the current “sustainability” status, such as...
