The Fragility of Social Capital AgEcon
Antoci, Angelo; Sabatini, Fabio; Sodini, Mauro.
This paper addresses two hot topics of the contemporary debate, social capital and economic growth. Our theoretical analysis sheds light on decisive but so far neglected issues: how does social capital accumulate over time? Which is the relationship between social capital, technical progress and economic growth in the long run? The analysis shows that the economy may be attracted by alternative steady states, depending on the initial social capital endowments and cultural exogenous parameters representing the relevance of social interaction and trust in well-being and production. When material consumption and relational goods are substitutable, the choice to devote more and more time to private activities may lead the economy to a “social poverty trap”,...

Trust and Control Dynamics in Agrifood Supply Networks: Communication Strategies for Electronic Transaction Environments AgEcon
Fritz, Melanie; Hausen, Tobias.
Agrifood supply networks are dynamic structures where firms regularly face the need to search for new market partners. A decision for a transaction with a new partner requires the existence of appropriate control and safeguard mechanisms as well as trust to overcome perceived risk and uncertainties. Electronic transaction environments offer new potentials for the identification of new transaction partners. However, trust and control need to be communicated appropriately in electronic transaction environments for agrifood supply network scenarios. Problems for appropriate communication are posed by the complex interrelation between trust and control in transaction processes and their dynamically changing importance in a transaction relation. This paper...

Collective Action Initiatives to Improve Marketing Performance: Lessons from Farmer Groups in Tanzania AgEcon
Barham, James; Chitemi, Clarence.
The primary inquiry of this study is to identify and understand the underlying factors that enable smallholder farmer groups to improve their market situation. The specific objective of this paper is to examine to what extent certain group characteristics and asset endowments facilitate collective action initiatives to improve group marketing performance. This objective is approached through an evaluation of a government-led program in Tanzania, which is attempting to increase smallholder farmers’ incomes and food security through a market-oriented intervention. Findings suggest that more mature groups with strong internal institutions, functioning group activities, and a good asset base of natural capital are more likely to improve their market situation....

El papel del capital social en la activación y consolidación de los sistemas agroalimentarios localizados. El caso de las indicaciones geográficas AgEcon
Mancebo Azor, S..
The establishment of Geographical Indications (GI) can be considered like an instrument, that from initiative of public policies of rural development, can have application for the protection of territorial agri-food productions that present tipicity. In the case of being Local Agri-food Systems (LAFS) with a little level of productive organization, the GI Regulatory Board can be considered like a key local institution, from which programs directed to the structuring of the sector are undertaken, affecting the professionalization and building social capital between the agents who compose the LAFS. In this case the Regulatory Board will assume a determining role in the transmission of knowledge and innovations in the LAFS.

The Decision to Migrate and Social Capital: Evidence from Albania AgEcon
Cattaneo, Cristina.
The objective of this paper is to determine whether the participation in social organizations, which are commonly defined as a form of social capital, represents a complement or a substitute with respect to emigration. The nature of the relationship depends on the motivations behind the two choices, which induce the households to join a group and to invest in migration. To address this research question a bivariate probit model is employed, in that the decision to migrate and to join a social organization are estimated simultaneously. Both temporary and permanent emigration of the household are addressed. The results of the empirical estimation reveal that families participating in social organizations are more likely to send siblings abroad permanently,...

Environmental Participation and Environmental Motivation AgEcon
Torgler, Benno; Garcia-Valinas, Maria A.; Macintyre, Alison.
We explore whether environmental motivation affects environmental behavior by focusing on volunteering. The paper first introduces a theoretical model of volunteering in environmental organizations. In a next step, it tests the hypothesis working with a large micro data set covering 32 countries from both Western and Eastern Europe using several different proxies to measure environmental motivation. Our results indicate that environmental motivation has a strong impact on individuals’ voluntary engagement in environmental organizations. A higher level of environmental motivation due to higher environmental moral standards may lead to a stronger voluntary involvement in environmental organizations.

IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF THE POULTRY SECDTOR IN ARGENTINA AgEcon
Senesi, Sebastian; Vilella, Fernando; Palau, Hernan.
The Argentine “industrial aviculture” started by 1960. The great development of the poultry sector was during the 1990s as a consequence of the direct price transfer due to technological and organizational improvements achieved in the sector. The objective of this paper is to identify how leadership and entrepreneurship have been important elements in the development of the Argentine poultry sector. The poultry sector is one of the faster development in Argentina and one that offers higher quality. This was achieved only because of great coordination due to leadership and entrepreneurship both at micro and macro level.

The Solaria Syndrome: Social Capital in a Growing Hyper-technological Economy AgEcon
Antoci, Angelo; Sabatini, Fabio; Sodini, Mauro.
We develop a dynamic model to analyze the sources and the evolution of social participation and social capital in a growing economy characterized by exogenous technical progress. Starting from the assumption that the well-being of agents basically depends on material and relational goods, we show that the best-case scenarios hold when technology and social capital both support just one of the two productions at the expenses of the other. However, trajectories are possible where technology and social interaction balance one another in fostering the growth of both the social and the private sector of the economy. Along such tracks, technology may play a crucial role in supporting a “socially sustainable” economic growth.

Job Instability and Family Planning: Insights from the Italian Puzzle AgEcon
Sabatini, Fabio.
This paper carries out an investigation into the socio-economic determinants of couples’ childbearing decisions in Italy. Since having children is in most cases a “couple matter”, the analysis accounts for the characteristics of both the possible parents. Our results do not support established theoretical predictions according to which the increase in the opportunity cost of motherhood connected to higher female labour participation is responsible for the fall in fertility. On the contrary, the instability of the women’s work status (i.e. their being occasional, precarious, and low-paid workers) reveals to be a significant dissuasive deterrent discouraging the decision to have children. Couples with unemployed women are less likely to plan childbearing as...
