Ways of farming and ways of thinking: do farmers’ mental models of the landscape relate to their land management practices? Ecology and Society
The efficiency of the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy in mitigating the negative effects of agricultural intensification on the landscape and biodiversity is increasingly being questioned. Enhancing a reciprocal understanding of various stakeholders’ mental models of agro-social-ecosystems has been proposed to trigger changes in both policy design and farmers’ behaviors. However, the relationship between farmers’ mental models and practices is rarely considered. Here, we explore the relationship between farmers’ individual mental models (IMMs) of the agricultural landscape and their land management practices. To do so, we developed a theoretical and methodological framework grounded in cognitive...

Exploring social representations of adapting to climate change using topic modeling and Bayesian networks Ecology and Society
Lynam, Timothy; Reflecting Society; James Cook University, Department of Anthropology; CSIRO; tim.lynam@internode.on.net.
When something unfamiliar emerges or when something familiar does something unexpected people need to make sense of what is emerging or going on in order to act. Social representations theory suggests how individuals and society make sense of the unfamiliar and hence how the resultant social representations (SRs) cognitively, emotionally, and actively orient people and enable communication. SRs are social constructions that emerge through individual and collective engagement with media and with everyday conversations among people. Recent developments in text analysis techniques, and in particular topic modeling, provide a potentially powerful analytical method to examine the structure and content of SRs using large samples of narrative or text. In this...

Although the broad concept of mental models is gaining currency as a way to explore the link between how people think and interact with their world, this concept is limited by a theoretical and practical understanding of how it can be applied in the study of human-environment relationships. Tools and processes are needed to be able to elicit and analyze mental models. Because mental models are not directly observable, it is also important to understand how the application of any tools and processes affects what is measured. Equally important are the needs to be clear on the intent of the elicitation and to design the methods and choose the settings accordingly. Through this special edition, we explore how mental models are elicited using two approaches...

Attitudes towards genomic: Research in four Latin American countries Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Rodríguez Yunta,Eduardo; Valdebenito Herrera,Carolina; Misseroni,Adelio; Fernández Milla,Lautaro; Outomuro,Delia; Schiattino Lemus,Irene; Ferrer Lues,Marcela; Lolas Stepke,Fernando.
The present reflection refers to data obtained about the social representations of genomic research and its applications through interviews with legislators and lawyers, biomedical researchers and civilians and the review of scientific and legal literature in four Latin American countries: Argentine, Chile, Mexico and Peru. Several issues are addressed: little access to prevention and therapeutic methods, lack of equity in health benefits, commercialization of gene sequences through patents which leads to commercial exploitation of underdeveloped countries, the possibility of physical or psychological damage or genetic discrimination, the possibility of genetic modifications or abortion for eugenic reasons, the necessity of safeguarding confidentiality,...

Initiatives for the sustainable development of aquaculture have so far focused on the production of codes of conduct, of best management practices, of standards etc., most of which have been developed by international organisations, the industrial sector and non governmental organisations. They were, to a large extent, produced using a "top down" process and inspired by models from intensive industrial shrimp and sea fish farming (mainly salmon). However, most of global aquaculture production comes from small-and medium-sized farms, essentially in Asia which contributes 92% of the total world aquaculture production volume. The objective of this article is to define the contours of systemic typologies that are able to express the sustainability conditions...

This paper objectified to bring to light the milk industry managers’ social representations on the environmental management. For such, the systematization of a theoretic-methodological framework was adopted, whose interpretation shows that the environmental management, in the view of the researched milk industries managers, runs three complementary representations. In the first one, the environmental management emerges as an organizational practice which necessarily aims the execution of state legal environmental norms. In the second one, the same process refers to the managers’ imagination as an organizational strategy which may contribute for gains in competitive advantages in the market, which is becoming more and more demanding when it comes to...

O USO DA ANÁLISE DE CONTEÚDO COMO UMA FERRAMENTA PARA A PESQUISA QUALITATIVA: DESCRIÇÃO E APLICAÇÃO DO MÉTODO AgEcon
Silva, Cristiane Rocha; Gobbi, Beatriz Christo; Simao, Ana Adalgisa.
The purpose of this present rehearsal is the conceptual explanation of the method of content analysis used in the qualitative research and its application in the social sciences. Two theoretical roads are traveled for the construction of that purpose. The first is based on the reference to the Theory of the Social Representations and the second to the Theory of the Action. The argument that sustains the purpose is that both theories base the content analysis as method of analysis for the social actors declared speech. Initially it is accomplished a theoretical rising of authors who described the content analysis and theories and later is developed an analysis of some dissertations that made of the method in the research process in Post Graduation s Program...

Representations of Colombian Andean farmers on climate change and mitigation and adaptation strategies Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Rodríguez,José de Jesús Núñez; Rodríguez,Julio César Carvajal; Carrero,Darcy Margarita; Novoa,Luisa Lorena Ramírez; Frank,José Vicente Sánchez.
Abstract: This article presents the findings of research conducted in a rural community located in Norte de Santander Department, Colombia, on farmers' representations of the impacts of climate change. The analysis of the behavior of temperature and average rainfall in the period 1985-2015 was put together concerning the local knowledge of the farmers. The approach was developed through 56 multiple choice questions surveys done to 144 producers intentionally selected from a group of 1,933 farmers, analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The findings indicate a broad opinion by farmers of the effects of climate change due to the gradual increase in temperature that causes changes in the bimodal system and intensity of rainfall;...

Daily practices, consumption and citizenship Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mazzarino,Jane M.; Morigi,Valdir J.; Kaufmann,Cristine; Farias,Alessandra M.B.; Fernandes,Diefersom A..
This paper promotes a reflection on the relationship between daily practices and consumption. Understanding how conflicts, resistance and consensus are generated from daily consumption practices opens up possibilities for reflecting on the construction of sustainability in the context of diversity, one of the landmarks of the globalized world. Within this socio-cultural context, the central issue is: can consumption generate citizenship practices? The concepts of subject and agent help one think about collective action and subjectivation processes and their interferences on the collective consuming behavior. Based on empirical data from a research carried out in the municipality of Estrela in 2007, in the Taquari Valley - Rio Grande do Sul (Southern...

Anjos,Flávio Sacco dos; Pollnow,Germano Ehlert; Menezes,Gabrielito Rauter; Caldas,Nádia Velleda; Silveira,Danielle Farias da.
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this article was to investigate the perception of the students of the school restaurants of the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) on a system of preferential purchases. This is done through public calls that give preference to production coming from the family agriculture of Pelotas and region. A semi-structured questionnaire (survey) was applied focusing on the level of knowledge and information of respondents on what is family farming, on the aforementioned system and their respective social developments. It was verified that there are differences of perception according to the area of knowledge of the respondents. Meanwhile, there is great convergence regarding the importance of this system for the regional economy.
