The efficiency of the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy in mitigating the negative effects of agricultural intensification on the landscape and biodiversity is increasingly being questioned. Enhancing a reciprocal understanding of various stakeholders’ mental models of agro-social-ecosystems has been proposed to trigger changes in both policy design and farmers’ behaviors. However, the relationship between farmers’ mental models and practices is rarely considered. Here, we explore the relationship between farmers’ individual mental models (IMMs) of the agricultural landscape and their land management practices. To do so, we developed a theoretical and methodological framework grounded in cognitive... |

Although the broad concept of mental models is gaining currency as a way to explore the link between how people think and interact with their world, this concept is limited by a theoretical and practical understanding of how it can be applied in the study of human-environment relationships. Tools and processes are needed to be able to elicit and analyze mental models. Because mental models are not directly observable, it is also important to understand how the application of any tools and processes affects what is measured. Equally important are the needs to be clear on the intent of the elicitation and to design the methods and choose the settings accordingly. Through this special edition, we explore how mental models are elicited using two approaches... |

The present reflection refers to data obtained about the social representations of genomic research and its applications through interviews with legislators and lawyers, biomedical researchers and civilians and the review of scientific and legal literature in four Latin American countries: Argentine, Chile, Mexico and Peru. Several issues are addressed: little access to prevention and therapeutic methods, lack of equity in health benefits, commercialization of gene sequences through patents which leads to commercial exploitation of underdeveloped countries, the possibility of physical or psychological damage or genetic discrimination, the possibility of genetic modifications or abortion for eugenic reasons, the necessity of safeguarding confidentiality,... |

Initiatives for the sustainable development of aquaculture have so far focused on the production of codes of conduct, of best management practices, of standards etc., most of which have been developed by international organisations, the industrial sector and non governmental organisations. They were, to a large extent, produced using a "top down" process and inspired by models from intensive industrial shrimp and sea fish farming (mainly salmon). However, most of global aquaculture production comes from small-and medium-sized farms, essentially in Asia which contributes 92% of the total world aquaculture production volume. The objective of this article is to define the contours of systemic typologies that are able to express the sustainability conditions... |

This paper objectified to bring to light the milk industry managers’ social representations on the environmental management. For such, the systematization of a theoretic-methodological framework was adopted, whose interpretation shows that the environmental management, in the view of the researched milk industries managers, runs three complementary representations. In the first one, the environmental management emerges as an organizational practice which necessarily aims the execution of state legal environmental norms. In the second one, the same process refers to the managers’ imagination as an organizational strategy which may contribute for gains in competitive advantages in the market, which is becoming more and more demanding when it comes to... |

The purpose of this present rehearsal is the conceptual explanation of the method of content analysis used in the qualitative research and its application in the social sciences. Two theoretical roads are traveled for the construction of that purpose. The first is based on the reference to the Theory of the Social Representations and the second to the Theory of the Action. The argument that sustains the purpose is that both theories base the content analysis as method of analysis for the social actors declared speech. Initially it is accomplished a theoretical rising of authors who described the content analysis and theories and later is developed an analysis of some dissertations that made of the method in the research process in Post Graduation s Program... |
