Fermentation parameters, quality and losses in sugarcane silages treated with chemical additives and a bacterial inoculant R. Bras. Zootec.
Pedroso,André de Faria; Rodrigues,Armando de Andrade; Barioni Júnior,Waldomiro; Souza,Gilberto Batista de.
The objective of this trial was to evaluate chemical additives and a bacterial inoculant on the inhibition of alcoholic fermentation and reduction of losses in sugarcane silages. Treatments were (doses on a fresh forage basis): without additive (control); urea (10 g/kg); urea (5 g/kg) + sodium benzoate (0.5 g/kg); sodium benzoate (1 g/kg); urea + ammonium sulfate in a 9:1 relation (10 g/kg); Lactobacillus buchneri (5 × 10(4) cfu/g). Silages were produced in 10.16- × 30-cm PVC tubes, provided with tight lids adapted with Bunsen valves for gas losses quantification. Minisilos were opened 139 days after ensiling. Ethanol content (227 g/kg dry matter - DM) and total DM loss (30%) were high in the control silage. All additives, except benzoate, decreased...

Performance of dairy cows fed rations produced with sugarcane silages treated with additives or fresh sugarcane R. Bras. Zootec.
Pedroso,André de Faria; Nussio,Luiz Gustavo; Rodrigues,Armando de Andrade; Santos,Flávio Augusto Portela; Mourão,Gerson Barreto; Barioni Júnior,Waldomiro.
An experiment was performed aiming at evaluating the performance of dairy cows fed sugarcane silages treated with additives compared to cows fed fresh forage. Twenty-four Holstein cows were grouped in blocks of three cows, according to parity order and milk production level, in multiple 3 x 3 Latin Square design to evaluate three types of ration (63% roughage and 37% concentrate in dry matter - DM): ration with silage treated with urea (5.0 g/kg of fresh forage - FF) + sodium benzoate (0.5 g/kg FF); ration with silage inoculated with Lactobacillus buchneri (5 x 10(4) cfu/g FF); ration with fresh sugarcane. Each evaluation period consisted of two weeks for adaptation and one week for data collection. Cows fed rations with silages treated with urea +...

Effect of method of secondary fermentation and type of base wine on physico-chemical and sensory qualities of sparkling plum wine BABT
Joshi,Vinod K; Sharma,Sanjeev K; Goyal,Ravinder K; Thakur,Narayan S.
Plum base wines prepared with potassium metabisulphite or sodium benzoate were converted into sparkling wine, either by `Methode Champenoise' or tank method with artificially carbonated wine serving as a control. In both the secondary fermentation methods ethanol and low temperature acclimatized yeast; Saccharomyces cerevisiae UCD-595 with optimized sugar (1.5%) and di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate (0.2%) were used. Both methods of sparkling wine production and the type of base wine affected the physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of the sparkling wine produced. In the secondary fermented wines, most of the physico-chemical characteristics were altered compared to that of artificially carbonated wines except volatile acidity, methanol, propanol and...

Chemicals and lemon essential oil effect on Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris viability BJM
Maldonado,Maria Cristina; Aban,Marina Paola; Navarro,Antonio Roberto.
Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris is considered to be one of the important target microorganisms in the quality control of acidic canned foods. There is an urgent need to develop a suitable method for inhibiting or controlling the germination and outgrowth of A.acidoterrestris in acidic drinks. The aim of this work was to evaluate the chemicals used in the lemon industry (sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate), and lemon essential oil as a natural compound, against a strain of A.acidoterrestris in MEB medium and in lemon juice concentrate. The results pointed out that sodium benzoate (500-1000-2000 ppm) and lemon essential oil (0.08- 0.12- 0.16%) completely inhibited the germination of A. acidoterrestris spores in MEB medium and LJC for 11 days. Potassium...
