Efficiency in inventories of ants in a forest reservein Central Amazonia PAB
Souza,Jorge Luiz Pereira de; Moura,Carlos Alberto Ribeiro de; Franklin,Elizabeth.
The objective of this work was to evaluate an inventory method efficiency for ants. We used subsamples collected in 24 transects of 100 m, distributed in 6 plots of 600 ha each in primary forest, as part of a long-term project. Ten litter subsamples were extracted per transect using Winkler extractors. Ants were identified to genus level, and Crematogaster, Gnamptogenys and Pachycondyla genera to species/morphospecies level. To evaluate the consequences of reduced sampling on the retention of ecological information, we estimated the lowest number of subsamples needed to detect the effects of environmental variables. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was used to generate dissimilarity matrices, and Mantel correlations between each reduced-sampling effort and...

Towards a universal sampling protocol for soil biotas in the humid tropics PAB
Bignell,David Edward.
This paper reviews the methods for the inventory of below-ground biotas in the humid tropics, to document the (hypothesized) loss of soil biodiversity associated with deforestation and agricultural intensification at forest margins. The biotas were grouped into eight categories, each of which corresponded to a major functional group considered important or essential to soil function. An accurate inventory of soil organisms can assist in ecosystem management and help sustain agricultural production. The advantages and disadvantages of transect-based and grid-based sampling methods are discussed, illustrated by published protocols ranging from the original "TSBF transect", through versions developed for the alternatives to Slash-and-Burn Project (ASB) to the...

Spatial Variability of Soil Fauna Under Different Land Use and Managements Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,Raimunda Alves; Siqueira,Glécio Machado; Costa,Mayanna Karlla Lima; Guedes Filho,Osvaldo; Silva,Ênio Farias de França e.
ABSTRACT Geostatistics allows the evaluation of the distribution pattern of data with high spatial variability in agricultural systems. This study aimed to evaluate the spatial variability of biological diversity indices of soil fauna under different land (agriculture and forest). Samples were collected in seven areas (millet, soybean, corn, eucalyptus, pasture crops, and preserved and disturbed Cerrado), in Maranhão state, Brazil. The soil fauna was caught trapped in pitfall traps, installed 3 m away from each other. In each area, 130 traps were maintained for seven days. After this period, they were removed and their content transferred to bottles and taken to the laboratory, where the insects were screened and identified at the level of orders and...

Spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) in Agricultural Land Use Systems in Subtropical Environments Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rosa,Marcio Gonçalves da; Santos,Júlio Cesar Pires; Brescovit,Antônio Domingos; Mafra,Álvaro Luiz; Baretta,Dilmar.
ABSTRACT Changes in land use management in agricultural areas can affect the biodiversity of spider families. This study aimed to evaluate spider diversity in different land use systems with capture by two sampling methods, and to identify soil properties that can modulate the occurrence of spiders. Five land use systems, representative of traditional agricultural areas, were evaluated in the west of Santa Catarina, Brazil, to establish a scale of land use intensity: native forest, eucalyptus reforestation areas, pastures, crop-livestock integration areas, and annual crops under no-tillage. The collection methods were manual from soil monoliths and soil traps. Altogether 479 individuals were captured, which were distributed among 20 families, 40 genera,...

The influence of land use systems on soil and surface litter fauna in the western region of Santa Catarina Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Bartz,Marie Luise Carolina; Brown,George Gardner; Orso,Renato; Mafra,Álvaro Luiz; Baretta,Dilmar.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the abundance of soil and surface litter fauna in the western region of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, in the following land use systems (LUS): no-tillage crops (NT), integrated crop-livestock (ICL), pasture (PA), Eucalyptus plantation (EP) and native forest fragments (NF). Sampling was done in three counties in the western region of Santa Catarina: Xanxerê, Chapecó and São Miguel do Oeste, in two seasons (winter and summer). The evaluation of soil/litter fauna in each LUS was performed by installing nine "pitfall traps" per sampling grid (3 x 3). The counties are true replicas. The soil for the chemical attributes was collected at the same sampling points for soil fauna. Altogether, 17 taxa were identified in...

Soil spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) in native and reforested Araucaria forests Scientia Agricola
Pereira,Jamil de Morais; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira; Brescovit,Antonio Domingos; Oliveira Filho,Luís Carlos Iuñes de; Segat,Julia Corá; Baretta,Carolina Riviera Duarte Maluche; Baretta,Dilmar.
ABSTRACT: Spiders are part of the soil biodiversity, considered fundamental to the food chain hierarchy, directly and indirectly influencing several services in agricultural and forest ecosystems. The present study aimed to evaluate the biodiversity of soil spider families and identify which soil properties influence their presence, as well as proposing families as potential bioindicators. Native forest (NF) and reforested sites (RF) with Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze were evaluated in three regions of the state São Paulo, both in the winter and summer. Fifteen soil samples were collected from each forest to evaluate the biological (spiders and microbiological), chemical and physical soil properties, in addition to properties of the litter (dry...

In a study on remediation of soil fertility and biodiversity of soil biota affected lowland area planted with various tree species, a site located near Ek-kasatsoontorn reservoir area at Bann Somsanouk, Amphur Borabue, Mahasarakam Province, Northeast of Thailand was selected as the experimental area which 17 tree species were planted. The study site was divided into three zones according to its land slopes as zones I, II and III. The study on remediation of soil fertility in each study zone was done by collecting soil samples at 0-20 cm. soil depth at the ground around plant stems of Manila Tamarind (Pithecolobium dulce) and Common Ironwood ( Casuarina equisetifalia) and between. Sample soil were assessed for organic matter and essential elements (N,P,K)...
