Unravelling species boundaries in the Aspergillus viridinutans complex (section Fumigati): opportunistic human and animal pathogens capable of interspecific hybridization Naturalis
Hubka, V.; Barrs, V.; Dudová, Z.; Sklenář, F.; Kubátová, A.; Matsuzawa, T.; Yaguchi, T.; Horie, Y.; Nováková, A.; Frisvad, J.C.; Talbot, J.J.; Kolařík, M..
Although Aspergillus fumigatus is the major agent of invasive aspergillosis, an increasing number of infections are caused by its cryptic species, especially A. lentulus and the A. viridinutans species complex (AVSC). Their identification is clinically relevant because of antifungal drug resistance and refractory infections. Species boundaries in the AVSC are unresolved since most species have uniform morphology and produce interspecific hybrids in vitro. Clinical and environmental strains from six continents (n = 110) were characterized by DNA sequencing of four to six loci. Biological compatibilities were tested within and between major phylogenetic clades, and ascospore morphology was characterised. Species delimitation methods based on the multispecies...

First occurrence of Leightoniomyces phillipsii (Berk. & Leight.) D. Hawksw. & B. Sutton for South America Rev. Bras. Bot.
Grandi,Rosely Ana Piccolo.
Leightoniomyces phillipsii (Berk. & Leight.) D. Hawksw. & B. Sutton, an anamorphic fungus, is described and illustrated for the first time for South America. This synnematous fungus with typical coarsely verrucose conidia was previously known to be associated only with lichens, but can be associated with plant roots. This discovery extends its habitat, geographical distribution, and ecosystem roles.

Fungal Community Structure as an Indicator of Soil Agricultural Management Effects in the Cerrado Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Valadares-Pereira,Alana de Almeida; Oliveira,Eláiny Cristina Alves Martins; Navarrete,Acacio Aparecido; Oliveira Junior,Waldesse Piragé de; Tsai,Siu Mui; Peluzio,Joenes Mucci; Morais,Paula Benevides de.
ABSTRACT Forest-to-agriculture conversion and soil management practices for soybean cropping are frequently performed in the Cerrado (Brazilian tropical savanna). However, the effects of these practices on the soil microbial communities are still unknown. We evaluated and compared the fungal community structure in soil from soybean cropland with soil under native Cerrado vegetation at different times of the year in the Tocantins State. Soil samples were collected in two periods after planting (December) and in two periods during the soybean reproductive growth stage (February). Concomitantly, soil samples were collected from an area under native Cerrado vegetation surrounding the agricultural area. The soil DNA was analyzed using a fingerprinting method...

Degradation of lignosulfonic and tannic acids by ligninolytic soil fungi cultivated under icroaerobic conditions BABT
Silva,Isis Serrano; Menezes,Cristiano Ragagnin de; Franciscon,Elisangela; Santos,Eder da Costa dos; Durrant,Lucia Regina.
Soil fungi were evaluated regarding their ability to degrade lignin-related compounds by producing the ligninolytic enzymes. Lignosulfonic and tannic acids were used as sole carbon sources during 30 days under microaerobic and very-low-oxygen conditions. The fungi produced lignin-peroxidase, manganese-peroxidase and laccase . Expressive degradations was observed by C18 reversed-phase HPLC, indicating the biodegradation potential of these fungi, showing more advantages than obligate anaerobes to decontaminate the environment when present naturally.

Hyphomycetes from soil of an area affected by copper mining activities in the State of Bahia, Brazil BJM
Costa,Isabella P.M. Wanderley; Cavalcanti,Maria Auxiliadora Q.; Fernandes,Maria José S.; Lima,Débora M.M..
With the aim of observing the impact produced by copper-mining activities on soil fungi, samples were collected from an area at the Caraíba Mining, in the State of Bahia, Brazil. This area was divided in six sub-areas: one had native vegetation and was used as control, while the others varied according to degrees of impact. The samples, collected during the dry and the rainy seasons, were submitted to serial dilutions and placed on Petri dishes with Sabouraud medium plus antibiotic. Sixty five species and 16 genera of Hyphomycetes were identified: Acremonium, Acrophialophora, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Chrysosporium, Curvularia, Fusarium, Humicola, Malbranchea, Myrothecium, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Scolecobasidium, Staphylotrichum, Stilbella and...

Assay of antioxidant potential of two Aspergillus isolates by different methods under various physio-chemical conditions BJM
Arora,Daljit Singh; Chandra,Priyanka.
The objective of this work was to screen fungi isolated from soil of different areas of Punjab, India for antioxidant activity by dot blot assay and around 45% of fungal isolates demonstrated antioxidant potential. Two selected strains of Aspergillus spp (Aspergillus PR78 and Aspergillus PR66) showing quantitatively best antioxidant activity by DPPH assay were further tested for their reducing power, ferrous ion and nitric oxide ion scavenging activity, FRAP assay and total phenolic content. Different physio-chemical parameters were optimized for enhancement of the activity. This revealed stationary culture grown for 10 days at 25ºC at pH 7 to be the best for antioxidant activity. Sucrose in the medium as carbon source resulted in highest antioxidant...

Occurrence and diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in trap cultures from soils under different land use systems in the Amazon, Brazil BJM
Leal,Patrícia Lopes; Stürmer,Sidney Luiz; Siqueira,José Oswaldo.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the occurrence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species diversity in soil samples from the Amazon region under distinct land use systems (Forest, Old Secondary Forest, Young Secondary Forest, Agroforestry systems, Crops and Pasture) using two distinct trap cultures. Traps established using Sorghum sudanense and Vigna unguiculata (at Universidade Regional de Blumenau - FURB) and Brachiaria decumbens and Neonotonia wightii (at Universidade Federal de Lavras - UFLA) were grown for 150 days in greenhouse conditions, when spore density and species identification were evaluated. A great variation on species richness was detected in several samples, regardless of the land use systems from where samples were obtained. A...
