Current overview and potential applications of the soil ecosystem services approach in Brazil PAB
Prado,Rachel Bardy; Fidalgo,Elaine Cristina Cardoso; Monteiro,Joyce Maria Guimarães; Schuler,Azeneth Eufrausino; Vezzani,Fabiane Machado; Garcia,Junior Ruiz; Oliveira,Aline Pacobayba de; Viana,João Herbert Moreira; Pedreira,Bernadete da Conceição Carvalho Gomes; Mendes,Ieda de Carvalho; Reatto,Adriana; Parron,Lucília Maria; Clemente,Eliane de Paula; Donagemma,Guilherme Kangussu; Turetta,Ana Paula Dias; Simões,Margareth.
Abstract Human pressure on ecosystems has undesirable impacts on human well-being. After the Millennium Project, much interdisciplinary research has been developed worldwide aiming to understand these impacts on ecosystem flows and processes, and to learn about the costs and the benefits of ecosystem services for production. Soil provides many ecosystem services, since its multi-functionality is the basis for food production, water filtration, nutrient cycling, and other goods essential to life. This article presents the main concepts and classifications of soil ecosystem services and of its functions; the indicators and the methods for assessment, modeling, and valuation of ecosystem services; some recent applications to assess and evaluate impacts of...

Soil Quality Evaluation Using the Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) in Brazilian Oxisols with Contrasting Texture Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Cherubin,Maurício Roberto; Tormena,Cássio Antônio; Karlen,Douglas L..
ABSTRACT The Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) was developed in the U.S.A. and has been used as a tool for assessing and quantifying changes in soil quality/health (SQ) induced by land uses and agricultural practices in that region and elsewhere throughout the world. An initial study using SMAF in Brazil was recently published, but additional research for a variety of soils and management systems is still needed. Our objective was to use data from five studies in southern Brazil to evaluate the potential of SMAF for assessing diverse land-use and management practices on SQ. The studies examined were: (i) horizontal and vertical distribution of soil properties in a long-term orange orchard; (ii) impacts of long-term land-use change from native...

Impact of crop management systems on soil nematode communities in South Brazil Scientia Agricola
Machado,Andressa Cristina Zamboni; Zagatto,Maurício Rumenos Guidetti; Skora Neto,Francisco; Silva,Santino Aleandro da; Zanão Júnior,Luiz Antonio.
ABSTRACT The analysis of nematode communities allows inferring consequences of management practices on the soil food web. We studied the taxonomic structure of nematode communities in preserved areas of the Atlantic forest (native forest = NF) in Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, and in three different agroecosystems in neighboring areas to assess the effect of agricultural land use on nematode assemblages. Agroecosystems were located in a red latosol cropped during 30 years under conventional tillage (CT), no-tillage (NT), and minimal tillage (MT). We collected ten composite soil samples in each area in the summer. Nematodes were extracted by Baermann funnel and fixed with formalin. Subsequently, individuals were classified into taxonomic groups and...
