Beans cultivation and water regime on soil physical attributes CIGR Journal
Domingues, Rafael; Pereira, André Belmont; Pires, Luiz Fernando; Schiebelbein, Luis Miguel; Barbosa, Eduardo Augusto Agnellos; Auler, André Carlos.
Beans crop is an agricultural staple largely consumed in Brazil because it is part of the basic food of the population. Such a crop is usually grown by small growers and turns out to be of a great social and economical importance. The aim of the current manuscript was to scrutinize the effect of soil water status on its physical attributes, such as bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, hydraulic conductivity under protected environment conditions on beans crop (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The effect of the soil physical attributes on the biological response of the plants was also investigated. The experiment was installed in March of 2016 in a greenhouse. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme with four...

Cap-hardening parameters of Cam-clay model variations with soil moisture content and shape-restricted regression model CIGR Journal
Mehari Zewde Tekeste; Deere&Co; Desale H Habtzghi; Department of Statistics, The University of Akron, Akron, OH; Jos Koolen; Wagenigen University.
Modeling of soil elastic and permanent plastic volumetric strains (compaction) caused by loading from machinery vehicles using the modified Cam-clay soil constitutive model requires understanding the behaviors of compression and rebound parameters under unsaturated soil conditions.  Oedometer tests were conducted on a sandy loam, a loam, and a clay loam soil, all tropical soils, at three initial soil moisture contents and five maximum stress levels (50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 kPa).  The objectives were to investigate the effects of soil moisture content and maximum applied stress on the modified compression index (l*) and modified rebound index (k*) parameters of a modified Cam-clay soil model on the three soils and predict the compressibility indices using...

Calibration and study of soil physical-hydric relations using a frequency domain reflectometry probe CIGR Journal
Duarte, Thiago; Silva, Tonny José Araújo da; Bonfim-Silva, Edna Maria; Souza, Hanna Pricilla Barbosa.
The FDR Diviner 2000® probe is widely used to monitor soil moisture and to study physical-hidric relationships. The calibration equation provided by the manufacturer may not correctly reproduce the actual moisture value for the same type of soil with different bulk densities. In addition, it was postulated in this experiment that the capacitance probe can be used to determine the soil water tension and the initial soil water retention curve. Thus, the objectives were: to assess whether the calibration equation parameters of the FDR probe changes with the bulk density variation; estimate the soil water tension using the FDR probe; and verify the effect of the probe calibration in determining the initial soil water retention curve for the Red Oxisol at three...

Penetration resistance according to penetration rate, cone base size and different soil conditions Bragantia
Junior,Daniel Dias Valadão; Biachini,Aloísio; Valadão,Franciele Caroline Assis; Rosa,Rodrigo Pengo.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of penetration rate and the size of the cone base on the resistance to penetration under different soil moistures and soil bulk density. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 4x2x2x2 factorial arrangement, with the factors, soil bulk density of 1.0; 1.2; 1.4 and 1.6 Mg m-3, soil moisture at the evaluation of 0.16 and 0.22 kg kg-1, penetration rates of 0.166 and 30 mm s-1 and areas of the cone base of 10.98 and 129.28 mm² resulting in 32 treatments with 8 replicates. To ensure greater uniformity and similarity to field conditions, samples passed through cycles of wetting and drying. Only the interaction of the four factors was not significant. Resistance values varied with the density of the soil,...

Evaluation of DSSAT soil-water balance module under cropped and bare soil conditions BABT
Faria,Rogério Teixeira de; Bowen,Walter Truman.
The performance of the soil water balance module (SWBM) in the models of DSSAT v3.5 was evaluated against soil moisture data measured in bare soil and dry bean plots, in Paraná, southern Brazil. Under bare soil, the SWBM showed a low performance to simulate soil moisture profiles due to inadequacies of the method used to calculate unsaturated soil water flux. Improved estimates were achieved by modifying the SWBM with the use of Darcy's equation to simulate soil water flux as a function of soil water potential gradient between consecutive soil layers. When used to simulate water balance for the bean crop, the modified SWBM improved soil moisture estimation but underpredicted crop yield. Root water uptake data indicated that assumptions on the original...

Microclimate of Atlantic forest fragments: regional and local scale heterogeneity BABT
Ramos,Flavio Nunes; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës.
The aim of this work was to investigate whether (i) the organisms within different fragments, on regional scale (separated by up to 100 km), could be submitted to similar climatic conditions (rainfall and temperature), and whether (ii) the edge formation in forest fragments could stimulate microclimatic changes (canopy cover, air temperature and soil humidity), on local scale. The organisms within different fragments, on regional scale, were submitted to different climatic conditions, and the edge formation in the forest fragment stimulated microclimatic changes, on local scale, although in a heterogenic way. Not just the distance from the edge influenced the microclimatic differences. Probably, the edge age, location, the matrix structure, as well as, gap...

Correcting field determination of elemental contents in soils via portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Dijair,Thaís Santos Branco; Silva,Fernanda Magno; Teixeira,Anita Fernanda dos Santos; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry has been useful worldwide for determining soil elemental content under both field and laboratory conditions. However, the field results are influenced by several factors, including soil moisture (M), soil texture (T) and soil organic matter (SOM). Thus, the objective of this work was to create linear mathematical models for conversion of Al2O3, CaO, Fe, K2O, SiO2, V, Ti and Zr contents obtained by pXRF directly in field to those obtained under laboratory conditions, i.e., in air-dried fine earth (ADFE), using M, T and SOM as auxiliary variables, since they influence pXRF results. pXRF analyses in field were performed on 12 soil profiles with different parent materials. From them, 59 samples were...

Hydro-physical processes and soil properties correlated with origin of soil hydrophobicity Ciência Rural
Vogelmann,Eduardo Saldanha; Reichert,José Miguel; Prevedello,Juliana; Awe,Gabriel Oladele.
Hydrophobicity is the phenomenon where the soil has reduced wettability, usually associated with coating of soil particles by hydrophobic organic substances. This study aimed to provide a description of the hydrophobicity occurrence, highlight recent discoveries about the origin of phenomenon and discuss the main hydro-physical properties and chemical processes linked to the development of hydrophobic behavior in soils. Hydrophobicity is associated with other factors such as soil moisture, presence of some fungi species, particle size, soil pH and occurrence of burnings. The causative substances may be provided by local vegetation, through deposition or decomposition. The dependence and combination of different factors that influence hydrophobicity in...

It is now well understood that data on soil moisture and sea surface salinity (SSS) are required to improve meteorological and climate predictions. These two quantities are not yet available globally or with adequate temporal or spatial sampling. It is recognized that a spaceborne L-band radiometer with a suitable antenna is the most promising way of fulfilling this gap. With these scientific objectives and technical solution at the heart of a proposed mission concept the European Space Agency (ESA) selected the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission as its second Earth Explorer Opportunity Mission. The development of the SMOS mission was led by ESA in collaboration with the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in France and the Centro para...

Naphthalene Acetic Acid and Irrigation Regimes Influence Paddy Yield and its Economics under Arid Conditions Planta Daninha
HASNAIN,Z.; BAKHSH,I.; HUSSAIN,I.; SHEHERYAR,; E.A.,KHAN.
ABSTRACT: The study aimed to highlight the impact of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and irrigation regimes on the productivity of coarse rice under agro-ecological conditions of Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan. The experiment was comprised of two factors with four levels (0, 60, 90, 120 mL ha-1) of NAA and irrigation at the depths (60, 75, 90 and 105 cm) of soil profile. The data was interpreted to observe the plant height (cm), productive tillers (m-2), sterility percentage (%), biological yield (t ha-1), and grain yield (t ha-1) of coarse rice. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was also calculated. The results indicated that the application of NAA was found very effective in improving paddy yield and hence resulted in better BCR value. The maximum paddy yield was...

Weed emergence in autumn under temperate conditions Planta Daninha
Calado,J.M.G.; Basch,G.; Carvalho,M..
The emergence of weed plants depends on environmental conditions, especially temperature and soil moisture. The latter is extremely important in Mediterranean environments which are characterized by irregular amount and distribution of rain throughout the year, which influences the beginning of the growth cycle of the annual species (seed germination). This paper studies the influence of rainfall, in particular accumulated rainfall in autumn, on the emergence of weed plants. The experiment was carried out on Luvisols, and the appearance of flora under field conditions was observed. Through analysis of the results, it can be concluded that a high percentage of weed plants (> 85% related to the highest registered value) was obtained with more than 90 mm...
