Soil fertility management in organic systems, regulated by the organic standards, should seek to build healthy, fertile soils and reduce reliance on external inputs. The use of nutrients from conventional sources, such as animal manures from conventional farms, is currently permitted, with restrictions, in the organic regulations. However, the reliance of organic agriculture on the conventional system is considered problematic. In light of this, the organic sector in Denmark has recently decided to phase out, and ultimately ban, the use of conventional manures and straws in organic agriculture in Denmark by 2021. In organic growing, both in Norway and elsewhere in Europe, significant amounts of fertiliser products not derived from certified organic farming are used, such as dried poultry manure or other types of fertilisers derived from conventional farms such as animal by-products. Organic agriculture aims to be independent of conventional agriculture, and fertilisers derived from harvesting of natural materials may be a relevant alternative. Catching of wild fish, and collection or cultivation of seaweeds, result in residual products which contain essential plant nutrients. Phosphorus (P) in sewage sludge holds the main proportion of P currently lost in waste streams, and options to recycle it for agriculture are needed. Pyrolysis is a promising local alternative to centralized sewage sludge incineration. Pathogens and organic pollutants are destroyed and a carbon-rich substrate known as biochar is formed. We evaluated pyrolysis of sewage sludge as well as sintering of pyrolysis char with alkali salts. The products were applied in a pot experiment with calcareous and acidic soils to determine P uptake by ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and changes in soil pH, available P and cation exchange capacity. Whereas fertilisers based on phosphate rock show a high abiotic resource depletion potential, phosphorous (P) recycling fertilisers such as struvite are related to a high fossil primary energy demand. Compost can result in very high acidification, eutrophication and global warming potentials. Sewage sludge, its ash and P-recycling fertilisers based thereon, Thomas phosphate or meat and bone meal as well as especially wood ash provide significantly lower environmental impacts but have partially other disadvantages, e.g. P-availability or pollutant accumulation.
